This paper presents the comparison of the bond behavior of various FRP rebars. A total of 9 specimens including steel reinforcement were tested through direct pull-out test procedure. The test results have revealed that the bond behavior was affected by the deformation shapes and surface treatments. The newly proposed FRP rebar by KICT showed good bond strength and ductile behavior after failure.
Alumina composite reinforced by chopped alumina fiber was fabricated by filter-pressing the fiber slurry followed by the infiltration of alumina slurry. The chopped fiber was coated with nickel by electroless plating method. The green samples were densified by hot-pressing. Microstructures were studied by SEM and the mechanical properties such as bending strength and fracture toughness were measured. The resulting mechanical properties were analyzed in relation with processing parameters such as preform density and resulting microstructures. The load-displacement curve of the specimen with Ni interlayer but without Ni inclusion showed brittle fracture mode due to the direct contact between matrix and fiber. The load-displacement curve of the specimen with Ni interlayer and Ni inclusion in the matrix which is introduced by high applied pressure during specimen preparation showed non-brittle fracture mode due to the fiber pull-out and dutile phases in the matrix.
Characteristics of the interface between tube and tube sheet which were formed by explosive expansion and roll expansion, have been studied in the research. The results are as follows: Optimum amounts of explosives for the expansion of Alloy 600 (19.05mm and 15.88mm) were found to be RDX 3.5-8.5g/m. Because explosive expansion caused les strain hardening and increased bounding strength, characteristics of the explosively expanded were better than those of mechanically expanded. As the transition region of the explosive expansion is inactive, the resistance to the stress corrosion cracking increases by 30∼40% compared to the roll and hydraulic expansion.

The anisotropic mechanical properties were measured for the three orthogonal orientations of plain weave glass fabric reinforced epoxy resin laminate. In tensile and flexural tests, axial and edge type specimens failed by pull-out of warp and fill yarns, respectively. In contrast, the thickness type specimens failed by adhesive failure process. Longitudinal cracking occurred in several of the edge type specimens during tensile test. That cracking caused pop-in in the stress-strain curve. Defects induced by improper coupon machining caused that cracking.

The various rib geometry of hybrid fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcing bars were analyzed by finite element method. From the analysis result, two types of hybrid FRP reinforcing bars such as spiral and cross type with the same dimension of rib geometry were fabricated in this study. To evaluate the bond properties of them, direct pull-out test was performed. All testing procedures including specimens preparation, set-up of test equipments and measuring devices were made in accordance with the recommendations of CSA Standard S806-02. From the test results, it was found that cross type hybrid FRP reinforcing bars showed the highest bond strength than that of the others due to the higher relative rib area.
Strengthening mechanisms in an ordered intermetallic compound containing coherent precipitates of lower antiphase boundary energy than the matrix were investigated on the basis of the interaction between the deformation induced dislocations and the disordered precipitates in an $Ll_2$ ordered $Ni_3Al$-based alloy. Extra work was needed to pull out the dislocations from the precipitate, which was dependent on the difference in the antiphase boundary energy between the matrix and the precipitate, as well as the size and volume fraction of the precipitate. The strength of the $Ll_2$ ordered ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase containing fine precipitates of the disordered ${\gamma}$ phase was examined using the proposed model. The model can explain almost quantitatively the age hardening behavior of the $Ll_2$ ordered ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase.

Blends of silicone rubber (VMQ) and liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) were prepared by the melt mixing technique. Mechanical, XRD, thermal and dynamic mechanical investigations are reported for the pure silicone rubber and blends. The mechanical properties, viz. the tensile strength, tear strength and elongation at break, of the silicone rubber decreased with the addition of LCP. The SEM study on the tensile fractured surface of the blends revealed that they had a two phase structure, and that the failure was mainly due to fiber pull out, which suggests that the VMQ and LCP are incompatible in all of the proportions examined in this study. However, the FTIR study shows that there was a partial interaction between the VMQ and LCP, but which may not be sufficient to grip the fibrils under the applied load. In the XRD analysis, it was observed that the crystalline structure of the silicone rubber deteriorated in the presence of LCP. The DMA study suggested that the storage modulus of the silicone rubber was improved with the addition of LCP, due to the high modulus of the LCP phase. The thermal stability of the silicone rubber was greatly reduced by the addition of LCP, due to the latter having a thermal stability lower than that of silicone rubber.

This paper provides a brief summary of the performance of an innovative slip hardening twisted steel fiber in comparison with other fibers including straight steel smooth fiber, high strength steel hooked fiber, SPECTRA (high molecular weight polyethylene) fiber and PVA fiber. First the pull-out of a single fiber is compared under static loading conditions, and slip rate-sensitivity is evaluated. The unique large slip capacity of T-fiber during pullout is based on its untwisting fiber pullout mechanism, which leads to high equivalent bond strength and composites with high ductility. Due to this large slip capacity a smaller amount of T-fibers is needed to obtain strain hardening tensile behavior of fiber reinforced cementitious composites. Second, the performance of different composites using T-fibers and other fibers subjected to tensile and flexural loadings is described and compared. Third, strain rate effect on the behavior of composites reinforced with different types and amounts of fibers is presented to clarify the potential application of HPFRCC for seismic, impact and blast loadings.
The self-toughened Si3N4 ceramics where needle-like coarse ${\beta}$-Si3N4 grains were dispersed within fine-grain-ed matrix were prepared via hot-prssing at 1730$^{\circ}C$ for 2 h using 5 vol% ${\beta}$-Si3N4 whiskers as a seed. In this study the microstructures and mechanical properties of self-toughened Si3N4 ceramics were investigated. The flexural strength of self-toughened Si3N4 ceramics was increased from 600-800 MPa of the Si3N4 monolith to 830-1025 MPa. The KIC was also increased from 4.0-5.0MPa$.$m1/2 of the Si3N4 monolith to 5.8-6.5MPa$.$m1/2$.$The needle-like coarse Si3N4 grains in self-toughened ceramics were considered to induce various toughening mechanisms including the crack deflection pull-out and bridging and to contribute to KIC improvement. In ad-dition to toughening mechanisms the KIC improvement was considered to be partially indebted also to the orien-tation of large ${\beta}$-Si3N4 grains and to the promoting effect of ${\beta}$-Si3N4 whiskers on the ${\alpha}$ to ${\beta}$ transtion.
