  • The development and maintenance of a sound bond are an essential requirements of concrete repair and replacement. The bond property of a bonded overlay to its substrate concrete during the lifetime is one of the most important performance requirements which should be quantified. A standard or a verified bond strength measurement method is required at field for screening, selecting materials and quality control for overlay or repair materials. This study compares the nipple pipe direct tensile test, flexural adhesion test, and core pull-off test with their test results. Substantial differences in the failure stresses of three test methods were attributed to their different geometries and loading conditions. From these comparison and investigation, core pull-off test was relatively good because the coefficient of variation values were about 2%. It would be suitable for use in-situ because of its simplicity and accuracy.

  • An automobile ball joint is the element for connecting the control arm and the knuckle arm, allowing rotational motion. The ball joint consists of the stud, plug, socket, and seat. These components are assembled through the caulking process that consists of plugging and spinning. In the existing research, the pull-out strength and gap stiffness were calculated, but we did not consider the uncertainties due to the numerical analysis and production. In this study, the uncertainties of material property and tolerance are considered to predict the distributions of pull-out strength and gap stiffness. Also, pull-out strength and gap stiffness are predicted as the a distribution rather than one deterministic value. Furthermore, a robust design applying the Taguchi method is suggested.

  • The use of recycled aggregate concrete for the purpose of environmental and resource conservation has gained increasing interest in construction engineering. Nevertheless, few studies have reported on the bonding performance of the bars in recycled aggregate concrete after exposed to high temperatures. In this paper, 72 pull-out specimens and 36 cubic specimens with different recycled coarse aggregate content (i.e., 0%, 50%,100%) were cast to evaluate the bond behavior between recycled aggregate concrete and steel bar after various temperatures ($20^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$). The results show that the recycled aggregate concrete pull-out specimens exhibited similar bond stress-slip curves at both ambient and high temperature. The bond strength declined gradually with the increase of the temperature. On the basis of a regression analysis of the experimental data, a revised bond strength mode and peak slip ratios relationship model were proposed to predict the post-heating bond-slip behavior between recycled aggregate concrete and steel bar.

  • The use of post installed anchors with bond type has lately been increasing when it is necessary to repair, reinforce, or remodel structures. This method provides flexibility and simplicity for construction of structural members that require adhering or fixing. Meanwhile, strength evaluation of anchors with expansion type among post-installed anchors systems has nearly reached setting up stage like design code through continual experimental studies for the last ten years, but analyses or experimental studies on anchor system with bond type are not yet sufficient. Accordingly, the designers and builders of korea depend on foreign design codes since there are no exact domestic design code they could credit. In this study, the objectives are investigating the effects on pull-out strength of resin anchors embedded into plain concrete by pull-out experiment of resin anchors with variables such as anchor diameter, anchor interval, embedment depth and edge distance.

  • Two different types of shear-friction tests were classified by external loadings and referred to as a push-off and a pull-off test. In a pull-off test, a tension force is applied in the transverse direction of the test specimen to produce a shear stress at the shear plane. This paper presents a method to evaluate shear transfer strengths of uncracked pull-off specimens. The method is based on the compression field theory and different constitutive laws are applied in some ways to gain accurate shear strengths considering softening effects of concrete struts based on Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT) and Softened Truss Model (STM). The validity of the proposed method is examined by applying to some selected test specimens in literatures and results are compared with the predicted values. A general agreement is observed between predicted and measured values at ultimate loading stages in initially uncracked pull-off test specimens. A shear strength evaluation formula considering the effective compressive strength of a concrete strut was proposed, and the applicability of the proposed formula was verified by comparing with the experimental results in the literature.

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to compare the bond strength of reinforcing steel in self-consolidating concrete (SCC) with conventional concrete (CC). This study investigated two different compressive strengths of SCC as well as CC. The experimental program consisted of 24 pull-out specimens as well as 12 full-scale beams (three for each concrete type and strength). The pull-out specimens were based on RILEM recommendations, and the beam specimens were tested under a simply supported four-point loading condition. The CC test results served as a control and were used to evaluate the results from the SCC pull-out and beam specimen tests. Furthermore, a comparison was performed between results of this study and a bond database of CC specimens. These comparisons indicate that SCC beams possess comparable or slightly greater bond strength than CC beams.

  • PURPOSES: The purpose of this paper is to evaluate interface performance while using various tack coat materials for asphalt overlay. METHODS : The evaluation was conducted with tracking test, permeability, and interface bond strength. Tracking test was conducted using an image processing technique, to investigate the susceptibility of the tack coat materials. BBS and pull-off test were conducted to evaluate bond strength. The permeability test was conducted to evaluate the effect of tack coat materials. RESULTS : Results reveal that the trackless tack coat material demonstrates less tracking compared to other materials. Moreover, both BBS and pull-off tests can effectively evaluate the bond strength at the interface. RSC-4 was measured less bond strength. Moreover, tack coat prevents water penetration through the surface and aids the extension of the surface life of asphalt pavement. CONCLUSIONS : Trackless tack coat demonstrated a high and consistent bond strength performance. The tack coat types demonstrate marginally different performance as function of curing times. Field applicability was tested based on visual observation. Therefore, these should be considered when trackless tack coat is slightly enhanced the pavement performance based on limited this study results. Finally, it is necessary to allow reasonable time for the tack coat to completely cure.

  • In order to develop a local stiffness-variant stretchable substrate with the soft PDMS/hard PDMS/FPCB configuration consisting of two stiffness-different polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) parts and flexible printed circuit board, a FPCB was bonded to PDMS using the acrylic-silicone double-sided tape and the interfacial adhesion of the PDMS/FPCB was evaluated. The pull strength of the FPCB, which was bonded to the fully cured PDMS using the silicone adhesive of the double-sided tape, was 259 kPa and the delamination during the pull test occurred at the interface between the PDMS and the silicone adhesive. On the contrary, the bonding process, for which the FPCB was bonded using the silicone adhesive to the PDMS partially cured for 15~20 minutes at $60^{\circ}C$ and then the PDMS was fully cured for 12 hours at $60^{\circ}C$, exhibited the remarkably enhanced pull strength of 1,007~1,094 kPa. With the above mentioned bonding process, the delamination during the pull test was observed at the interface between the FPCB and the acrylic adhesive of the acrylic-silicone double sided tape.

  • Significant improvements in bond strength between new and existing concrete can be achieved through the modification of the new concrete by latex modification. But, no test method has been adopted as a standard to measure the bond strength between the concrete used to repair and the substrate being repaired. The performance of old and the new concrete construction defends upon band strength between old and the new concrete. Current adhesion strength measurement method is inaccurate method that ignore effect of stress concentration by shape of specimens. Therefore, this research calculates stress concentration coefficient using finite element analysis and direction tensile strength test (pull-off test). The result shows that the required core depth is 2.5 cm. Elastic modulus and overlay thickness do not influence in stress concentration.

  • The cement concrete pavements are designed twenty years of performance life in Korea. At the present time, some expressways have been elapsed seventy percent of performance life which are detecting local failures. The most repair methods using to repair failures are partial depth repair and full section repair. These methods are most important bonding strength between rapid curing materials and substrate concrete pavements. This study was performed to evaluate bonding strength of the composites section made of rapid curing material and substrate concrete pavements. The pull-out tester was used to test bonding strength for the composites section made of each materials. In the results of the test, the bonding strength values of the epoxy mortar and acrylic mortar are higher than those of the other materials. The performance life of repaired section is affected by various factor. The bonding strength of bonded composites section may be affect the performance life, significantly.
