This study investigated pesticide residues in 367 agricultural products from local food markets in Ulsan. Pesticide residues in these samples were analyzed using multi class pesticide multi-residue methods on the Korean Food Code for 350 pesticides using GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS. Residual pesticides were detected in 79 (21.5%) samples and exceeded maximum residual limits (MRLs) in 4 (1.1%) samples (chwinamul, narrow-head ragwort, green onion, apricot). The range of the hazard index (%) was 0.0000-63.1043%, and values for the pesticides that violated the MRLs were 63.1043 (green onion), 0.5417 (chwinamul), 0.0684 (apricot), and 0.0100 (narrow-head ragwort). This risk assessment study showed that the values of hazard index (%) were less than 100%, indicating that the consumption of these local agricultural food products was not harmful for human health.
Objectives: To evaluate the policies on 2009 influenza pandemic in Korea at the end of first wave. Methods: The main policies and the estimation of these were described according to the progress of 2009 influenza pandemic. Results: The public health measures for containment were estimated to be successful in the early stage. The preparedness of antiviral agents and vaccines before the pandemic, risk-communication on pandemic influenza and policies of government including vaccines, and the education of health care worker and support of health care institutions was not enough to respond to the pandemic. Conclusions: The additional evaluation should be performed at the end of the pandemic in various aspects including health and socioeconomic effects.
Objectives: We examined the prevalence of tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke among middle-school students in Korea using the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in 2013. Methods: The GYTS in Korea was conducted between July and August 2013 by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Data were collected using a self-administered anonymous questionnaire from a nationally representative sample of middle-school students aged 13-15 years in sampled classrooms. Results: The GYTS in Korea was completed by 4235 students aged 13-15 years in 43 middle schools. Approximately one in five of the students (17.8%) reported that they had tried cigarettes in the past, while 5.2% reported currently being cigarette smokers. Current cigarette smoking was higher in boys (7.5%) than in girls (2.6%). Of the students, 29.7% had been exposed to secondhand smoke at home, 47.4% inside enclosed public places, and 53.9% in outdoor public places. Of the current cigarette smokers, 25.7% bought their cigarettes from a store despite a law prohibiting this. Additionally, 58.0% of students noticed point-of-sale tobacco advertisements or promotions, 66.8% of current cigarette smokers wanted to stop smoking, and 70.9% of students had been taught about the dangers of tobacco use in school. Conclusions: These findings provide an opportunity to develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive tobacco control policy. The results suggest that youth have relatively easy access to cigarettes and are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke in public places, as well as to point-of-sale tobacco advertisements and promotions. Strict enforcement of the ban on tobacco sales to youth, expanding smoke-free areas, and advertising bans are needed to reduce tobacco use among youth.

Objectives: Estimating the number of deaths caused by smoking is crucial for developing and evaluating tobacco control and smoking cessation policies. This study aimed to determine smoking-attributable mortality (SAM) in Korea in 2020. Methods: Four large-scale cohorts from Korea were analyzed. A Cox proportional-hazards model was used to determine the hazard ratios (HRs) of smoking-related death. By conducting a meta-analysis of these HRs, the pooled HRs of smoking-related death for 41 diseases were estimated. Population-attributable fractions (PAFs) were calculated based on the smoking prevalence for 1995 in conjunction with the pooled HRs. Subsequently, SAM was derived using the PAF and the number of deaths recorded for each disease in 2020. Results: The pooled HR for all-cause mortality attributable to smoking was 1.73 for current men smokers (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.53 to 1.95) and 1.63 for current women smokers (95% CI, 1.37 to 1.94). Smoking accounted for 33.2% of all-cause deaths in men and 4.6% in women. Additionally, it was a factor in 71.8% of men lung cancer deaths and 11.9% of women lung cancer deaths. In 2020, smoking was responsible for 53 930 men deaths and 6283 women deaths, totaling 60 213 deaths. Conclusions: Cigarette smoking was responsible for a significant number of deaths in Korea in 2020. Monitoring the impact and societal burden of smoking is essential for effective tobacco control and harm prevention policies.
Background: Education on environmental health in Korea was begun with establishment of the Graduate School of Public Health at Seoul National University 1959. The sanitary movement started in Europe and the Americas in the 19th century and was introduced to Korea in the 1960s under the name of sanitary engineering. The field enlarged along with title changes. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the previous and present status of the environmental and public health fields in Korea. Methods: This study utilized documents published by the South Korean Ministry of Education and Korean Education Development Institute (KEDI) from 2015 to 2020, the homepages of universities with their history and regulations, and other related published documents. Results: Public health was fundamentally enlarged as an expert field in Korea with the establishment of the Graduate School of Public Health at Seoul National University in 1959. There are 102 departments relevant to the environmental field at two-year colleges, 220 at universities, and 175 at graduate schools. There are 89 departments relevant to the public health field at colleges, 96 at universities, and 160 at graduate schools as of 2020. The term "environment" in the title of a department is used as much as 80~93.1%, but "public health" in titles is used in 47.7~61.5%. Fifty percent of graduate schools of public health award specialty degrees other than master of public health. Conclusions: Although environment and public health fields have been expanded in universities in Korea, various specialty fields were included in university and graduate school. It is important to consider the coping plan with the trend.

This study was conducted to evaluate pesticide residues and foreign metallic matter on a total of 104 powdered agricultural products in Incheon. Residue testing for 373 pesticides was conducted by GC-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS, GC-ECD, GC-NPD and HPLC-UVD. Foreign metallic matter was detected by magnetic rod. As a result pesticide testing, 7 of the 104 products were found to be within the MRL of the pesticides. The detected pesticides were chlorpyrifos, etofenprox, fenoxanil, malathion, permethrin, tebuconazole and tetraconazole. As for foreign metallic matter, 16 samples were above the allowable limits set by Korean regulations. Therefore, the inspection of residual pesticides in raw material, and the removal of foreign metallic matter will require further stringent attention for the safety of powdered agricultural products.
