  • This study aimed to investigate the effects of the seed layer with copper electroplating on the surface morphology of copper foil. Three kinds of seed metal such as platinum, palladium, Pt-Pd alloy were used in this study. Electrodeposition was carried out with the constant current density of 200 $mA/cm^2$ for 68 seconds. Electrochemical experiments, in conjunction with SEM, XRD, AFM and four-point probe, were performed to characterize the morphology and mechanical characteristics of copper foil. Large particles were observed on the surface of the copper deposition layer when a copper foil was electroplated on the 130 nm thickness of Pd, Pt-Pd seed layer. However, a homogeneous surface, low resistivity was obtained when the 260 nm thickness of Pt, Pt-Pd alloy seed layer was used. The minimum value of resistivity was 2.216 ${\mu}{\Omega}-cm$ at the 260 nm thickness of Pt-Pd seed layer.

  • For both oxygen reduction (ORR) and hydrogen oxidation reactions (HOR) of proton electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), alloying Pt with another transition metal usually results in a higher activity relative to pure Pt, mainly due to electronic modification of Pt and bifunctional behaviour of alloy surface for ORR and HOR, respectively. However, activity and stability are closely related to the preparation of alloy nanoparticles. Preparation conditions of alloy nanoparticles have strong influence on surface composition, oxidation state, nanoparticle size, shape, and contamination, which result from a large difference in redox priority of metal precursors, intrinsic properties of metals, increasedreactivity of nanocrystallites, and interactions with constituents for the synthesis such as solvent, stabilizer, and reducing agent, etc. Carbon-supported Pt-Ni alloy nanoparticles were prepared by the borohydride reduction method in anhydrous solvent. Pt-Ru alloy nanoparticles supported on carbon black were also prepared by the similar synthetic method to that of Pt-Ni. Since electrocatalytic reactions are strongly dependent on the surface structure of metal catalysts, the atom-leveled design of the surface structure plays a significant role in a high catalytic activity and the utilization of electrocatalysts. Therefore, surface-modified electrocatalysts have attracted much attention due to their unique structure and new electronic and electrocatalytic properties. The carbon-supported Au and Pd nanoparticles were adapted as the substrate and the successive reduction process was used for depositing Pt and PtM (M=Ru, Pd, and Rh) bimetallic elements on the surface of Au and Pd nanoparticles. Distinct features of the overlayers for electrocatalytic activities including methanol oxidation, formic acid oxidation, and oxygen reduction were investigated.

  • The PtBi/C and PtBiPd/C electrocatalysts were synthesized via the irreversible adsorption of Pd and Bi ions precursors on commercial Pt/C catalysts. XRD and XPS revealed the formation of an alloy structure among Pt, Bi, and Pd atoms. The current of direct formic acid oxidation (Id) increased ~ 8 and 16 times for the PtBi/C and PtBiPd/C catalysts, respectively, than that of commercial Pt/C because of the electronic, geometric, and third body effects. In addition, the increased ratio between the current of direct formic acid oxidation (Id) and the current of indirect formic acid oxidation (Iind) for the PtBi/C and PtBiPd/C catalysts suggest that the dehydrogenation pathway is dominant with less CO formation on these catalysts.

  • We investigated the effects of Pd impurities on cube-textures in cold rolled and recrystallized PtPd tapes The sample were made from Pt$_{1-x}Pd_x$ alloys (x from 0 to0.34) by rolling at low temperature. The thickness of the tapes were about 100 ${\mu}$m. The PtPd[111] pole figures of X-ray Diffraction for all the samples indicated similar deformed textures. But the recrystallized textures after annealing showed that a better cube texture was formed in the sample of larger x. The final textures were sensitive to annealing time and temperature when x was increased.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the tendency of color change of ceramic, and its mechanism un der the influence of Pd-Ag alloy. The specimens were made by firing porcelain on tile metal plates cast with Au-Pt alloy, Pd-Cu alloy and Pd-Ag alloy. In the case of Pd-Ag alloy, specimens were fired under three different conditions as follows, 1) without protection, 2) protection with ceramic metal conditioner, 3) protection with carbon block. For the specimens of element analysis, a barrier was constructed with platinum foil between metal plate and ceramic. Color change was measured with colorimeter and elemental changes in ceramic were calculated with DC argon plasma emission spectrophotometer. The results were as follows : 1. Color change of ceramic by Pd-Ag alloy was negligible in hue, but decreased in value and increased in chroma (yellow discoloration). 2. Color change of ceramic by Pd-Ag alloy was appeared through vapor transport mechanism. 3. As the protection method for the color change of ceramic by Pd-Ag alloy, application of ceramic metal conditioner was superior to utilization of carbon block.

  • This experimental study was to determine the fitness in each cervical margin of reusing porcelain gold alloy. The gold alloy used in this experimental study was a Au-Pt-Pd alloy (BDCG-898, Bukwang Inc, Korea) for the fabrication of porcelain fused to metal crown. Twenty-five copings were divided into the five groups. And the group A, B, C, D and E were cording successively according to the frequency of reuse to five times. Each specimen was reused without adding new metal. The experimental results were as follows: 1. The group A, B, C showed good fitness in each cervical margin. 2. The group D got good fitness in labio and linguo cervical margin, but the mesio and disto cervical margin showed more than $40{\mu}m$ 3. The group E showed worse fitness than the other groups in each cervical margin.

  • Compensation wires for Pt/Pd thermocouple was manufactured using Cu/Ni alloys. Their thermoelectric voltage has been tested from room temperature to about $150^{\circ}C$. Alloys of $Cu_{95.5}Ni_{4.5}$ and $Cu_{89.5}Ni_{10.5}$ introduced only small emf differences to Pt/Pd thermocouples, indicating a real possibility of industrial use. Above $1000^{\circ}C$, the temperature difference was expected to he small as ${\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$, and the difference would be minimized by adjusting the Ni content with a small amount.
