During start up and shut down of a proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), the performance and lifetime of PEMFC were reduced. In this study, effect of startup and shutdown were investigated in dead-end type PEMFC using oxygen as a cathode gas with polarization curve, impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Dummy load which eliminates residual hydrogen and oxygen during startup and shutdown operation should be applied to mitigated the degradation of PEMFC performance. At 50% relative humidity (RH) under the repetitive on/off cycling, the cell performance decayed faster than at 100% RH because of corrosion of the cathode carbon support. Water suppling into cell reduced the degradation rate of dead-end type PEMFC during start up and shut down cycling at 50% RH.

The role of excess Pb about the crystallization behavior and electrical properties in b(Zr$\sub$0.52/Ti$\sub$0.48/)O3(PZT) thin films has not been precisely defined. In this work, the effect of excess Pb content on the ferroelectric properties of these films was investigated. To analyze the effect, PZT films containing various amounts of excess Pb were Prepared. PZT thin films were deposited on the Pt/Ti bottom electrode by rf magnetron sputtering method and then they were crystallized by rapid thermal annealing (RTA). The experiment showed that all PZT films indicated perovskite polycrystalline structure with preferred orientation (111) and no pyrochlore phase was observed. As higher excess Pb was included, the films showed that value of leakage current shift from 2.03${\times}$10$\^$-6/ to 6.63 ${\times}$ 10$\^$-8/A/cm$^2$ at 100kV/cm, and value of remanent polarization shift from 8.587 ${\mu}$C /cm$^2$ to 4.256 ${\mu}$C/ cm$^2$. Electrical properties of PZT thin film affected by Pb excess content of target were explained to be caused of defect among space charges and defect grain boundaries.
Reduction of chromate ion at the Pt-electrode was investigated in neutral unbuffered solutions, in buffered solutions of pH between 8 and 10, and in strongly alkaline medium. In buffered solutions of pH between 8 and 10, the number of electrons transfered in the reduction of chromate ion increased progressively with increasing pH. When chromate ion was reduced in 0.2 N sodium hydroxide medium the following mechanism was suggested: $CrO_4^=+H_2O+2e{\rightarrow}CrO_3^=+2OH^-,\;CrO_3^=3H_2O+e{\rightarrow}Cr(OH)_3+3OH^-$ When tetramethylammonium hydroxide (pH=13.5) was used as the supporting electrolyte, a second wave indicated strong adsorption. In unbuffered solutions of 0.1 N potassium chloride the linear sweep voltammogram consists of three or four distinct waves depending on the initial voltage and the voltage sweep rates, but the first wave was difficult to explain as a diffusion controlled wave.

A novel 8 V DC power source with an external series-parallel connection of 50 Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells(DSSCs) has been proposed. One DSC has the optimized length to width ratio of $5.2{\times}2.6$ cm and an active area 8 $cm^2$($4.62{\times}1.73$ cm) which attained a conversion efficiency of 4.2%. From the electrochemical impedance spectroscopic analysis, it was found that the resistance elements related to the Pt electrode and electrolyte interface behave like that of diode and the series resistance corresponds to the sum of the other resistance elements. In addition, the TEMoo mode pulsed Nd:YAG laser beam is used to improve the incident photon to current efficiency(IPCE) of DSSC. From this result, this novel 8V-0.38A DC power source shows stable performance with an energy conversion efficiency of about 4.5% under 1 sun illumination(AM 1.5, Pin of 100 $mW/cm^2$).

Power overshoot phenomenon was observed in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) used non-catalyzed graphite felt as cathode. Voltage loss in MFCs was mainly caused by cathode potential loss. Cheap stainless steel scrubber, which has high conductivity, and Pt/C coated graphite felt as cathode were used for overcoming power overshoot and reducing the cathode potential loss in MFCs. The MFCs used stainless steel scrubber showed no power overshoot even slow catholyte flow rate and produced 29% enhanced maximum current density ($23.9A/m^3$) than MFCs used non-catalyzed graphite felt while the power overshoot phenomenon was existed in Pt/C coated MFCs. Increasing catholyte flow rate resulted in disappearing power overshoot of MFCs used non-catalyzed graphite felt. In addition, maximum power density and current density of both MFCs used non-catalyzed graphite felt and stainless steel scrubber increased by 2-3.5 times. Cathode potential losses in all region of activation loss, ohmic loss, and mass transport loss were reduced according to increase of catholyte flow rate. Therefore, stainless steel scrubber has advantages that are economical materials as electrode and prevents power overshoot, leading to enhance electricity generation. In addition, increasing catholyte flux is one of great solution when power overshoot caused by cathodic overpotential is observed in MFCs.
Ginsenosides, one of the active ingredients of Panax ginseng, show various pharmacological and physiological effects, and they are converted into compound K (CK) or protopanaxatriol (M4) by intestinal microorganisms. CK is a metabolite derived from protopanaxadiol (PD) ginsenosides, whereas M4 is a metabolite derived from protopanaxatriol (PT) ginsenosides. The ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid $receptor_C$ ($GABA_C$) is primarily expressed in retinal bipolar cells and several regions of the brain. However, little is known of the effects of ginsenoside metabolites on $GABA_C$ receptor channel activity. In the present study, we examined the effects of CK and M4 on the activity of human recombinant $GABA_C$ receptor (${\rho}$ 1) channels expressed in Xenopus oocytes by using a 2-electrode voltage clamp technique. In oocytes expressing $GABA_C$ receptor cRNA, we found that CK or M4 alone had no effect in oocytes. However, co-application of either CK or M4 with GABA inhibited the GABA-induced inward peak current ($I_{GABA}$). Interestingly, pre-application of M4 inhibited $I_{GABA}$ more potently than CK in a dose- dependent and reversible manner. The half-inhibitory concentration ($IC_{50}$) values of CK and M4 were $52.1{\pm}2.3$ and $45.7{\pm}3.9{\mu}M$, respectively. Inhibition of $I_{GABA}$ by CK and M4 was voltage-independent and non-competitive. This study implies that ginsenoside metabolites may regulate $GABA_C$ receptor channel activity in the brain, including in the eyes.
Liquid crystal (LC; E7 and/or ML-0249)-embedded, poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-co-HFP)-based, polymer electrolytes were prepared for use in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The electrolytes contained 1-methyl-3-propylimidazolium iodide (PMII), tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI), and iodine ($I_2$), which participate in the $I_3^-/I^-$ redox couple. The incorporation of photochemically stable PVdF-co-HFP in the DSSCs created a stable polymer electrolyte that resisted leakage and volatilization. DSSCs, with liquid crystal(LC)-embedded PVdF-co-HFP-based polymer electrolytes between the amphiphilic ruthenium dye N719 absorbed to the nanocrystalline $TiO_2$ photoanode and the Pt counter electrode, were fabricated. These DSSCs displayed enhanced redox couple reduction and reduced charge recombination in comparison to that fabricated from the conventional PVdF-co-HFP-based polymer electrolyte. The behavior of the polymer electrolyte was improved by the addition of optimized amounts of plasticizers, such as ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC). The significantly increased short-circuit current density ($J_{sc}$, $14.60\;mA/cm^2$) and open-circuit voltage ($V_{oc}$, 0.68 V) of these DSSCs led to a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.42% and a fill factor of 0.65 under a standard light intensity of $100\;mW/cm^2$ irradiation of AM 1.5 sunlight. A DSSC fabricated by using E7-embedded PVdF-co-HFP-based polymer electrolyte exhibited a maximum incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of 50%.
The $SrBi_2$$Nb_2$$O_{9}$ (SBN) thin films were deposited with $SrNb_2$$O_{6}$ / (SNO) and $Bi_2$$O_3$ targets by co-sputtering method. For the growth of SBN thin films, we adopted the various power ratios of two targets; the power ratios of the SNO target to $Bi_2$$O_3$ target were 100 W : 20 W, 100 W : 25 W, and 100 W : 30 W during sputtering the SBN films. We found that the electrical properties of SBN films were greatly dependent on Bi content in films. The $Bi_2$Pt and $Bi_2$$O_3$ phase as second phases occurred at the films with excess Bi content greater than 2.4, resulting in poor ferroelectric properties. The best growth condition of the SBN films was obtained at the power ratio of 100 W : 25 W for the two targets. At this condition, the crystallinity and electrical properties of the films were improved at even low annealing temperature as $700^{\circ}C$ for 1h in oxygen ambient and the Sr, Bi and Nb component in the SBN films were about 0.9, 2.4, and 1.8 respectively. From the P-E and I-V curves for the specimen, the remnant polarization value ($2P_{r}$) of the SBN films was obtained about 6 $\mu$C/c $m^2$ at 250 kV/cm and the leakage current density of this thin film was $2.45$\times$10^{-7}$$A/cm^2$ at an applied voltage of 3 V.V.

Plasma in liquid phase has attracted great attention in the last few years by the wide domain of applications in material processing, decomposition of organic and inorganic chemical compounds and sterilization of water. The plasma in liquid is characterized by three main regions which interact each - other during the plasma operation: the liquid phase, which supply the plasma gas phase with various chemical compounds and ions, the plasma in the gas phase at atmospheric pressure and the interface between these two regions. The most complex region, but extremely interesting from the fundamental, chemical and physical processes which occur here, is the boundary between the liquid phase and the plasma gas phase. In our laboratory, plasma in liquid which behaves as a glow discharge type, is generated by using a bipolar pulsed power supply, with variable pulse width, in the range of 0.5~10 ${\mu}s$ and 10 to 30 kHz repetition rate. Plasma in water and other different solutions was characterized by electrical and optical measurements. Strong emissions of OH and H radicals dominate the optical spectra. Generally water with 500 ${\mu}S/cm$ conductivity has a breakdown voltage around 2 kV, depending on the pulse width and the repetition rate of the power supply. The characteristics of the plasma initiated in ultrapure water between pairs of different materials used for electrodes (W and Ta) were investigated by the time-resolved optical emission and the broad-band absorption spectroscopy. The deexcitation processes of the reactive species formed in the water plasma depend on the electrode material, but have been independent on the polarity of the applied voltage pulses. Recently, Coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy method was employed to investigate the chemistry in the liquid phase and at the interface between the gas and the liquid phases of the solution plasma system. The use of the solution plasma allows rapid fabrication of the metal nanoparticles without being necessary the addition of different reducing agents, because plasma in the liquid phase provides a reaction field with a highly excited energy radicals. We successfully synthesized gold nanoparticles using a glow discharge in aqueous solution. Nanoparticles with an average size of less than 10 nm were obtained using chlorauric acid solutions as the metal source. Carbon/Pt hybrid nanostructures have been obtained by treating carbon balls, synthesized in a CVD chamber, with hexachloro- platinum acid in a solution plasma system. The solution plasma was successfully used to remove the template remained after the mesoporous silica synthesis. Surface functionalization of the carbon structures and the silica surface with different chemical groups and nanoparticles, was also performed by processing these materials in the liquid plasma.

A characteristic study of aqueous chlorine dioxide generation from sodium chlorite($NaClO_2$) by an undivided electrochemical cell with different anode materials were performed. $IrO_2$-coated Ti, $RuO_2$-coated Ti and DSA were used as anode materials and Pt-coated Ti electrode was used as cathode. Various electrochemical cell operating parameters such as cell residence time($t_R$), initial feed solution pH, sodium chlorite and sodium chloride(NaCl) concentration and applied current for the generation of chlorine dioxide in an un-divided cell were investigated and optimized. Estimated optimal cell residence times in $IrO_2$-coated Ti, $RuO_2$-coated Ti and DSA anode material systems were around 2.27, 1.52 and 1.52 sec, respectively. Observed optimum initial feed solution pH was around 2.3 in all anode material systems. Optimum sodium chlorite concentrations in $IrO_2$-coated Ti, $RuO_2$-coated Ti and DSA anode systems were around 0.43, 0.43 and 0.32 g/L, respectively. Optimum electrolyte concentration and applied current were around 5.85 g/L and 0.6 A in all anode systems. Current efficiencies of $IrO_2$-coated Ti, $RuO_2$-coated Ti and DSA anode systems under optimum conditions were 79.80, 114.70 and 70.99%, respectively. Obtained energy consumptions for the optimum generation of chlorine dioxide were 1.38, 1.03 and $1.61W{\cdot}hr/g-ClO_2$, respectively.
