  • Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is one of the most intensively investigated materials in materials science. Mostly, TiO2 has been used in the form of nanoparticles, but recently new highly ordered TiO2 nanotubes (U-tube) has been introduced and applied to various applications due to their one-dimensional charge path way. In the present paper, we described the formation process and physical properties of U-tube then, gave examples of applications in sequence. Firstly, in photocatalysis, U-tube was used with Au/Pt co-catalysts and showed enhanced photogenerated H2 efficiency compared to bare TiO2. Secondly, photoelectrochemical performance of U-tube was evaluated with different heat-treatment temperatures. As a further application, two different types of electrical cell (Ti-TiO2-Pt and Ti-TiO2-PtNP) was configurated to observe memristive behavior of U-tube. Both cells behaved as switching electrodes and follow a memristive movement in the high and low resistance state extremely well with high reproducibility.

  • In this research, the photocatalytic degradation of benzothiophene in $TiO_2$ aqueous suspension has been studied. $TiO_2$ photocatalysts are prepared by a sol-gel method. The dominant anatase-structure on $TiO_2$ particles is observed after calcining the $TiO_2$ gel at $500^{\circ}C$ for 1hr. Photocatalysts with various transition metals (Nd, Pd and Pt) loading are tested to evaluate the effect of transition metal impurities on photodegradation. The photocatalytic degradation in most cases follows first-order kinetics. The maximum photodegradation efficiency is obtained with $TiO_2$ dosage of 0.4g/L. The photodegradation efficiency with Pt-$TiO_2$ is higher than pure $TiO_2$ powder. The optimal content value of Pt is 0.5wt.%. Also we investigate the applicability of $H_2O_2$ to increase the efficiency of the $TiO_2$ photocatalytic degradation of benzothiophene. The optimal concentration of $H_2O_2$ is 0.05. The effect of pH is investigated; we obtain the maximum photodegradation efficiency at pH 9. Hydroxy-benzothiophenes and dihydroxy-benzothiophenes are identified as reaction intermediates. It is proposed that benzothiophene is oxidized by OH radical to sequentially form hydroxyl-benzothiophenes, dihydroxybenzothiophenes, and benzothiophenedione.

  • The effect of the Pt electrode and the $Pt-IrO_2$ hybrid electrode on the performance of ferroelectric device was investigated. The modified Pt thin films with non-columnar structure significantly reduced the oxidation of TiN diffusion barrier layer, which rendered it possible to incorporate the simple stacked structure of Pt/TiN/poly-Si plug. When a $Pt-IrO_2$ hybrid electrode is applied, PZT thin film properties are influenced by the thickness and the partial coverage of the electrode layers. The optimized $Pt-IrO_2$ hybrid electrode significantly enhanced the fatigue properties of the PZT thin film with minimal leakage current.

  • SnO2-TiO2(Pt or Pd), as raw material for hydrocarbon gas sensors, was prepared by a coprecipitation method. The SnO2-TiO2-based thick film gas sensors were made by screen printing technique. The titanium dioxide synthesized was shown to be anatase structure from XRD peaks and was transformed to rutile structure between 700$^{\circ}C$ and 1000$^{\circ}C$. Titanium dioxide in SnO2-TiO2 thick films devices plays a very important role in the enhancement of the sensitivity to CH4 and C4H10. In the case of SnO2-TiO2(Pt) sensors, titanium dioxide that was rutile structure enhanced the sensitivity of the thick film to CH4. Platinum added to the raw powder at coprecipitation (as chloroplatinic acid VI hydrate) improved the gas sensitivity to hydrocarbon gases. Therefore, it is expected that the SnO2-TiO2(Pt) thick film sensors fabricated in this experiment could be put into practical use as LPG (primary component : C4H10 and C3H8) and LNG (primary component : CH4) sensors.

  • In this study, we successfully prepared CNT/$TiO_2$, Pt/CNT and Pt/CNT/$TiO_2$ composites and investigated their photocatalytic activity in MB solution by irradiation under UV light. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was used to characterize the functional group on the surface of MWCNTs, which oxidized by MCPBA. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) were used to analyze the prepared composites. The results of the decomposition of the MB solution indicated that the Pt/CNT/$TiO_2$ composite had the best photocatalytic activity among the three kinds of composites.

  • To make the all-solid-state lithium thin film battery having less than 1 fm in thickness, LiCoO$_2$ thin films were deposited on Pt/TiO$_2$/SiO$_2$/Si substrate as a function of Li/Co mole ratio and the deposition temperature by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). Especially, LiCoO$_2$ thin films deposited at 50$0^{\circ}C$ with target of Li/Co=1.2 mole ratio show an initial discharge capacity of 53 $\mu$Ah/cm$^2$-$\mu$m and capacity retention of 67.6%. The microstructural and electrochemical properies of (Li, La)TiO3 thin films grown on LiCoO$_2$Pt/TiO$_2$/SiO$_2$/Si structures by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) were investigated at various deposition temperatures. The thin films grown at 10$0^{\circ}C$ show an initial discharge capacity of approximately 51 $\mu$Ah/cm$^2$-$\mu$m and moreover show excellent discharge capacity retention of 90% after 100 cycles. An amorphous (Li, La)TiO$_3$ solid electrolyte is possible for application to solid electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium thin film battery below 1 $\mu$m.

  • Simultaneous removal reaction for NOx, soot over Pt catalysts using various $TiO_2$ as support was studied. The catalytic tests ware carried out injectin NO, soot, NO and soot simultaneously on each catalysts. As results, it showed different NOx removal efficiency and soot oxidation rate according to various kinds of $TiO_2$. Onset temperature of soot oxidation has a correlation to $NO_2$ generated for the independently performed NOx. It was investigated that NO to $NO_2$ oxidation was intimately related to crystallite size and surface area, and it has a tremendous impact on Pt aggregation on the catalyst surface and catalyst' reducibility. Therefore, we concluded that major index of the reaction was physico-chemical properties of catalyst' supports.

  • The effect of substrate on catalytic activity of CO oxidation with transition metal Platinum nanoparticles on doped and undoped TiO2 was investigated. Titanium dioxide was doped chemically with non-metal anions including nitrogen and fluorine. Undoped TiO2 was synthesized via simple conventional sol-gel route. Thin films of titania were developed by spin coating technique and the characterization techniques SEM, XRD, UV-Vis Absorption Spectroscopy and XPS were carried out to examine the morphology of films, crystal phase, crystallites, optical properties and elemental composition respectively. XPS analysis from doped TiO2 confirmed that the nitrogen site were interstitial whereas fluorine was doped into TiO2 lattice substitutionally. Catalytic activity systems of Pt/doped-TiO2 and Pt/undoped-TiO2 were fabricated to reveal the strong metal-support interaction effect during catalytic activity of CO oxidation reactions. By arc plasma deposition technique, platinum nanoparticles with mean size of 2.7 nm were deposited on the thin films of doped and undoped titanium dioxide. The CO oxidation was performed with 40 Torr CO and 100 Torr O2 with 620 Torr He carrier gas. Turn over frequency was observed two to three folds enhancement in case of Pt/doped TiO2 as compared to Pt/TiO2. The electronic excitation and the oxygen vacancies that were formed with the doping process were the plausible reasons for the enhancement of catalytic activity.

  • In this work, thermal shock and simultaneous removal reaction for NOx, soot over Pt catalysts using $TiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$ as support were studied. The catalytic reaction test for NOx and soot were also performed independently and simultaneously, as a result, it showed different NOx removal efficiency and soot oxidation rate according to support and phase, and the onset temperature of soot oxidation has correlation to NOx removal efficiency for the catalyst. The onset temperature of soot oxidation shifted to lower temperature by generated $NO_2$ at the simultaneous reaction for NOx and soot. Also Pt/$TiO_2$ catalyst is more affected than Pt/$Al_2O_3$ on NOx removal efficiency caused by thermal shock while Pt sintering effect induced to reduce the performance on soot oxidation rate for all catalysts.
