Influence of flaxseed with rumen undegradable protein level on milk yield, milk fatty acids and blood metabolites in transition ewes

  • An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of two levels of rumen undegradable protein (RUP) without or with whole or extruded flaxseed on milk yield, milk component, milk fatty acids (FAs) profile and plasma metabolites in transition ewes. Three weeks before and after lambing, seventy-two Baluchi ewes were used in a completely randomized design with a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The treatments contained 1) no flaxseed + 20% RUP (no flaxseed, low RUP [NFLR]); 2) no flaxseed + 40% RUP (no flaxseed, high RUP [NFHR]); 3) 10% whole flaxseed + 20% RUP (whole flaxseed, low RUP [WFLR]); 4) 10% whole flaxseed + 40% RUP (whole flaxseed, high RUP [WFHR]); 5) 10% extruded flaxseed + 20% RUP (extruded flaxseed, low RUP [EFLR]), and 6) 10% extruded flaxseed + 40% RUP (extruded flaxseed, high RUP [EFHR]). Ewes fed 10% extruded flaxseed exhibited higher (p < 0.001) dry matter intake (DMI) and colostrum yield (p < 0.1) compared to other treatments. Two types of flaxseed and RUP levels had no significant effect on milk yield, but milk fat and protein contents decreased and increased in diets containing 40% RUP, respectively. Ewes fed extruded flaxseed produced milk with lower concentrations of saturated fatty acids (SFA) and higher α-linolenic and linoleic acids and also polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) compared to other groups (p < 0.05). During post-lambing, the ewes fed diets containing flaxseed exhibited higher concentration of serum non-esterified FAs (NEFA) compared to diets without flaxseed (p < 0.01). The concentration of serum β-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) decreased in the diets containing flaxseed types at pre-lambing, but increased in diets containing extruded flaxseed at post-lambing (p < 0.01). The serum glucose concentration of ewes (pre and post-lambing) which consumed diets containing extruded flaxseed or 40% RUP increased, but blood urea concentration was elevated following supplementation of diet with whole flaxseed or 40% RUP (p < 0.001). In conclusion, utilization of 10% extruded flaxseed in the diets of transition ewes had positive effects on animal performance with favorable changes in milk FAs profile. However, there is no considerable advantage to supply more than 20% RUP level in the diet of transition dairy sheep.

  • This study was conducted to compare the quality characteristics of firm tofu (coagulant calcium chloride, CaCl2 used) made from eight imported and four domestic soybeans selling in Korean markets. The 100-seed weight of soybeans imported from China and Seonpung cultivated in Korea was the highest at 33.23 g and 32.51 g, respectively. Soybeans imported from the USA (bulk type) showed the lowest at 16.12 g, followed by Ukraine at 16.94 g, and Brazil at 18.51 g. The range of protein and fat in the 12 soybeans was 37.08~41.36% and 18.35~22.17%, respectively. The isoflavone contents were the highest in Daepung2 cultivated in Korea at 3,764.10 ㎍/g and the lowest in soybeans imported from Brazil at 1,439.85 ㎍/g. Tofu yield among the samples was in the following order: Seonpung (235.2%), China (232.0%) Daepung2 (228.7%), Daechan (225.7%), and Brazil (208%). Tofu made with soybeans cultivated in Korea (including from China) showed a higher yield compared to that made from soybeans from seven other countries. In the analysis of the correlation of quality factors of tofu, the hardness of the tofu was correlated with 100-seed weight (r=0.676⁎) and protein content of the soybeans (r=0.837⁎⁎). Tofu yield was correlated with 100-seed weight (r=0.748⁎⁎) and protein content of the soybeans (r=0.583⁎).

소맥육성계통의 품질특성과 변이에 관하여 (Quality Characteristics and Variation of Wheat Breeding Lines)

  • 소맥의 품질특성규명 및 품질개선을 위한 기초자료를 얻고자 일연의 시험을 수행한바 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 제분율은 품종에 따라 49~72%으로서 평균60.3%였으며 한국 재래종의 전체 평균은 62.6%를 보였다. 일반적으로 S.son, Caproch 그리고 CI 12703이 교배된 조합이 제분율이 높았다. 단백질 함량의 평균은 11.4%으로 품종에 따라 큰 차이가 있어 7-17%의 범위에 있고 한국 재래종의 평균 9.34%로 낮은 경향을 보였으나 수원 210호는 전체 평균보다 월등히 높았다. 침전가는 20cc 이하에서 70cc의 범위고 평균 43.6cc 였으며 한국 재래종은 낮았으나 수인210호는 높은 침전가를 보였다. Bb#1 \times Sturdy, 중국81 \times Atlas66 등 6개의 교배조합은 15.0% 이상의 단백질함량과 60.0cc 이상의 침전가를 보였으며 일반적으고 Bb#1 이 교배된 조합이 단백질함량과 침전가가 다른 조합보다 높았다. Pelshenke value의 분포는 20분 이하에서 180분 이상으로 평균 89.9분이었고 한국 재래종의 평균은 31.7분으로 극히 낮았다. 비침전가에 의하면 8.1%가 경질소맥인 반면 54.4%가 연질소맥, 37.5%가 중간질로 분류되었다. 329 공시계통(또는 품종)중 제분율, 단백질함량 및 침전가가 높은 교배조합은 Strampelli \times 69D-3607/Jogwang, S.son \times Caproch, Suweon #185 \times Toropi 그리고 Suweon #185 \times Ciano 였으며 Pribog, CT 14496 및 Sturdy \times Rcout/St rampelli \times Bb-Cno는 제분율은 높으나 단백질 함량과 침전가가 각각 9%, 30cc 이하로 낮았다.

가축분뇨의 종류, 시비량 및 시비시기가 호밀의 생육특성과 생산성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Liquid Manure Source, Application Rate and Time on Agronomic Characteristics and Forage Yield of Winter Rye)

  • 본 시험은 가축분뇨와 시비시기가 추파 호밀의 생육특성, 사초수량 및 조단백질 함량에 미치는 영향을 구명하기 위하여 실시하였다. 본 시험은 처리구로 화학비료 150N 전량기비구(CFB 150), 화학비료150N분시구(CFS150), 액상돈분 150N기비구(SLB150), 액상돈분150N분시구(SLS150), 액상돈분 300N기비구(SLB300), 액상돈분 300N분시구(SLS300), 액상우분 150N기비구(CLB150), 액상우분150N분시구(CLS150), 액상우분300N기비(CLB300), 액상우분300N분시(CLS300)로 10처리 3반복의 난괴법으로 하였다. 호밀의 출수기는 화학비료구와 돈분구는 4월 17일로 우분구는 4월 16일로 1일 늦었다. 화학비료의 녹체성은 다른 처리구 보다 높았고, 질소비료의 양이 증가할수록 녹체성이 높았으며 이는 호밀의 조단백질 함량 증가가 원인이었다. 그러나 호밀의 내도복성은 녹체성과는 반대로 질소비료가 적고 기비만 준 구에서 높았다. 화학비료의 건물률은 액상돈분 및 액상우분 보다 낮았다. 화학비료의 생초 및 건물수량은 액비보다 높았다. 건물수량은 분시와 전량기비 간에 차이가 없었다. 화학비료의 조단백질 함량 및 수량은 액상돈분 및 액상우분 보다 많았으며, 분시는 전량기비 보다 16%에서 18% 많았다. 이상의 결과를 볼 때 액상돈분 및 액상우분은 화학비료 보다 사초생산성이 낮았다. 그리고 분시는 전량기비 보다 건물 및 조단백질 수량 증가 측면에서 우수하였다.

Effects of Number of Washes and Salt Treatment on the Quality Characteristics of Protein Recovered from Alaska Pollock and Pork Leg

  • The aim of this study was to compare the effects of number of washes and salt addition on the meat quality in protein recovered from Alaska Pollock compared with pork leg. Various properties of protein recovered from Alaska Pollock (C, washed twice, no salt) and pork leg (T1, washed twice, no salt; T2, two washes, salt added; T3, washed four times, no salt; and T4, washed four times, salt added) were assessed in this study. Pork leg samples exhibited better color (more whiteness, less yellowness) than Alaska Pollock samples. In pork leg samples, four washes (T3, T4) during processing yielded whiter, less yellow protein than two washes (T1, T2). Overall, the textural property measures were higher in pork leg samples (T2, T3, and T4) than in other samples. Breaking force, jelly strength, and folding resistance were significantly higher in salt-treated pork leg samples (T2, T4) than in the other samples. Our findings demonstrate that protein recovered from pork leg has better color parameters, and physical strength compared with Alaska Pollock-derived protein. A higher number of wash steps and treatment with salt during processing were furthermore found to yield better color, and physical strength in the protein samples.

Techno-functional and rheological properties of Tenebrio molitor larvae protein by different extraction methods

  • Alkaline- or salt-assisted extractions have been widely used to extract edible insect proteins, however, there is a need for extraction techniques that balance cost-efficient production as well as preserving the protein properties. Mealworm proteins (Tenebrio molitor larvae) were extracted using three different extraction methods-alkali (AMP), salt (SMP), and water (WMP)-and then physicochemical and techno-functional properties were examined. AMP had high yield, protein, and amino acid contents, whereas WMP had high moisture, ash, and fat contents. SDS-PAGE showed a wide range of molecular weights in WMP whereas mostly low molecular weights were observed in AMP and SMP. AMP had poor protein solubilities compared to SMP and WMP across all pHs. AMP had enhanced water-holding capacity and emulsion stability, whereas WMP had improved oil-holding capacity and foaming properties. WMP formed a gel with and without the transglutaminase. The physicochemical and techno-functional properties demonstrated that water-soluble mealworm protein was superior to alkali-and salt-soluble mealworm proteins. Considering the cost efficiency and minimal impact on the environment as well, a cold press juicer could be utilized for mass production of mealworm protein compared to the conventional methods of protein extraction using alkali and salt.

내포체 단백질의 개선된 대규모 재접힘 기술 (Improved Large-Scale Refolding Techniques for Inclusion Body Proteins)

  • Techniques for protein refolding from inclusion body are discussed in view of its engineering application to large scale protein purification. Among the techniques, dilution and dialysis are mainly utilized due to simple operation. Membrane reactor, gel filtration chromatography, and continuous tank operation are emerging tools for their process-scale possibility in refolding. Reaction engineering approaches could be used to analyze the kinetic behaviour in the process scale refolding reactor. The kinetic analysis is helpful in the optimization of refolding yield in the refolding reactor.

  • In Korea, the traditional main food is rice There is a shortage of food, though the land is uesd intensively. The Koreans produce mainly rice its yield is very much higher than other crops. This leads to the comsumption of one type of food and, hence, to an unbalanced diet. Since 1962, Korean income has been going up rapidly, and the demand for animal protein has also increased. In order to solve the probem, the government decided to develop the dairy industry, because this would enable the population to consume more animal protein, and there is weak competion between rice and milk production.

Feeding of Cassava Hay for Lactating Dairy Cows

  • Whole cassava (Manihot esculenta, Crantz) crop was harvested about 10-15 cm above ground at 3 months after planting and sun dried for 1-3 days or until the leaves were crispy-dried and the branches and stems were mostly wilted to produce cassava hay. Cassava hay (CH) contained 86.3% DM, 8.9% ash, 23.6% CP, 44.3% NDF, 30.0% ADF, 5.8% ADL, 0.257% condensed tannin and 0.35 mg % HCN, respectively. In addition, CH contained relatively higher amino acid than alfalfa hay especially methionine, isoleucine, leucine and lysine. Ruminal fermentation of CH resulted in high concentrations of $C_2$, $C_3$, and $C_4$ at 72, 17 and 7 mol/100 mole, respectively. A feeding trial was conducted to study on effect of feeding of cassava hay in late lactating dairy cows fed on urea-treated rice straw during the dry season on their intake, ruminal pH, $NH_3$-N, milk yield and compositions. Thirty, Holstein-Friesian crossbred cows in their first lactation were randomly assigned in a randomized complete block design to receive five different dietary treatments: T1=supplementation of concentrate to milk yield at 1:2, T2=supplementation of concentrate to milk yield at 1:2+0.56 kg DM, T3=supplementation of concentrate to milk yield at 1:3+1.3 kg DM CH, T4=supplementation of concentrate to milk yield at 1:4+1.70 kg DM CH, T5=CH fed on ad libitum+small concentrate supplement. All cows received urea-treated rice straw as a roughage source throughout a 80 d feeding trial. The experiment revealed that cassava hay contained high level of protein and minimal level of tannin at 3 months of harvest. Tannin intake ranged from 1.44 to 13.36 g/hd/d and did not affect on urea-treated rice straw intake. Milk yield across treatments were similar (5.4-6.3 kg/hd/d) (p>0.05) but 3.5% FCM was highest in cows received CH at 1.70 kg/hd/d. Feeding of cassava hay resulted in increasing milk fat (4.0 to 4.6%) (p<0.05) and milk protein (3.8 to 5.3%) (p<0.05). Moreover, the use of CH could reduce concentrate supplementation to milk yield from 1:2 to 1:4, respectively, thus resulted in more milk income return.
