  • Recently, there has been growing interest in utilizing distributed generation (DG). However, an insertion of DG to existing distribution system can cause several problems such as voltage variations, harmonics, protective coordination, increasing fault current etc,. The typical protection system of the existing distribution system is designed for radial network. But penetration of DG to distribution system changes existing unidirectional power flow to bidirectional power flow. Therefore, investigation to cover whole field of distribution system must be accomplished such as changing of protection devices rating by increasing fault current, reevaluation of protective coordination. This paper presents that PSCAD/EMTDC simulations was accomplished to analyze effect of DG on the distribution protective coordination. In addition, directional recloser-sectionalizer coordination are evaluates distribution system with DG by using PSCAD/EMTDC simulation.

  • The standard power system model is needed to test a transmission line protective relay There are two methods to develop a power system model for transmission line protection. First method is based on characteristic power system model, and second method is based on functional power system model. This paper presents a standard power system model for performance test of transmission line protective relay, where the power system model is based on the two methods. And this model is simulated by using RTDS to test a protective relay.

  • To improve the safety, the fuel cell operate inside a pressurized enclosure which contains inert gas so called protective gas. The protective gas not only prevents the mixture of hydrogen and oxygen, but also removes the water in the vessel with the condenser. This study presents the details of the flow optimization in order to reduce the humidity in the fuel cell housing. The protective gas flow in the fuel cell container is studied by Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) simulations. This study focuses on optimizing the geometry of an protective gas circulation system in fuel cell module to reduce the humidity in the vessel. CFD analysis was carried out for an existing model to understand the flow behavior through the fuel cell system. Based on existing model CFD results, geometrical changes like inlet placement, optimization of outlet size, modification of fuel cell module system are carried out, to improve the flow characteristics. The CFD analysis of the optimized model is again carried out and the results show good improvement in protective gas flow behavior.

  • The risk is expressed as consequence of damage multiplied by likelihood of failure. The installation of a protective system reduces the risk by reducing the likelihood of failure at the facility. Also, the protective system has different effects on the likelihood of failure according to the proof test cycle. However, when assessing risks in the Off-site Risk Assessment (ORA) system, the variation in risk was not reflected according to the proof test cycle of protective system. This study was conducted to examine the need for proof test and the importance of cycle setting by applying periodic proof test of the protective system to ORA. The results showed that the likelihood of failure and the risk increased with longer proof test cycle. The risk of a two-yearly proof test was eight times greater than that of a three-month cycle. From the results, the protective system needs periodic proof test. Untested protective system for a long term cannot be reliable because it is more likely to be failed state when it is called upon to operate. In order to reduce the risk to an acceptable level, it is effective to differently set the proof test cycle according to the priority. This study suggested a more systematic and accurate risk analysis standard than ORA. This standard is expected to enable an acceptable level of risk management by systematically setting the priority and proof test cycle of the protective system. It is also expected to contribute to securing the safety of chemical facilities and at the same time, will lead to the development of the ORA system.

  • In urban rail transit systems, ground faults in the DC traction power supply system are currently detected by the potential relay, 64P. Though it detects the fault it cannot identify the faulted region and therefore the faulted region could not be isolated properly. Therefore it could cause a power loss of the trains running on the healthy regions and the safety of the passengers in the trains could be affected adversely. Two new ground fault protective relay schemes that can identify the faulted region are presented in this paper. A current limiting device, called Device X, is newly introduced in both system, which enables large amount of ground fault current flow upon the positive line to ground fault. One type of the relaying schemes is called directional and differential ground fault protective relay which uses the current differential scheme in detecting the fault and uses the permissive signal from neighboring substation to identify the faulted region correctly. The other is called ground over current protective relay. It is similar to the ordinary over current relay but it measures the ground current at the device X not at the power feeding line, and it compares the current variation value to the ground current in Device X to identify the correct faulted line. Though both type of the relays have pros and cons and can identify the faulted region correctly, the ground over current protective relaying scheme has more advantages than the other.

  • The introduction of the large transformer due to the large power demand has increased the fault current in power distribution system. The increased fault current can exceed the cut-off ratings of the circuit breaker. As the methods to solve this problem, the superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) has been notified. However, the limited fault current by SFCL affects the operational characteristics of the protective device such as overcurrent relay. Therefore, the selection of the proper impedance for the SFCL is required to keep overcurrent relay's protective coordination with the SFCL when a large transformer is introduced into the distribution system. In this paper, the SFCL's impedance for protective coordination was investigates in that a large transformer is introduced.

  • We have shown in Part I [1] of this study that medical needle-stick injuries are causing serious health problems to healthcare personnel and other professionals that require the attention of healthcare and textile researchers to develop new protective systems. Responding to such need, a needle force measurement device that is capable of measuring dynamic forces experienced by medical needles during needle penetration through protective articles was developed and described in part I. This paper reports the results of evaluation of protective woven fabrics from high performance fibers and standard and bifid medical needles using the force measurement system. The woven fabrics varied in cover factor, number of layers, and orientation angle. Standard and bifid needles with different gap widths were used to evaluate the resistance of the fabric to needle penetration.

  • In order to find out the management and sanitation status of protective gear provided at the construction site, a case study and survey were conducted by visiting the site. As a result of the case study, inspection and management, disinfection, and storage of protective equipment were insufficient in both workplaces with less than 50 employees and workplaces with more than 100 employees. As a result of the survey, workers(66.2%), said they did not know how to identify hard hats(67.6.%), how to identify bad hard hats(60.8%), and how to identify bad safety belts (73.0%), even though workers(66.2%) were educated on protective gear, and those in charge of protective gear Non-specified(56.8%), regular inspection of the provided protective equipment was not performed(82.4%), and disinfection was not performed(90.5%). Therefore, as a management plan to maintain the performance of personal protective equipment, educational aspects, regular training on protective equipment, training on how to identify defective protective equipment, management of recording papers, technical aspects, strengthening of standards for placement of dedicated safety managers in small workplaces, participation of workers' representatives when selecting protective equipment, and selection of protective equipment for workers Providing opportunities, administrative aspects of protective equipment regulation and management, introduction of sanitary and cleanliness system, and selection of personnel in charge of protective equipment management were suggested.

  • Previous research on healthcare workers’ protection has concentrated on liquid barrier protection by providing impermeable personal articles such as latex gloves. This property is of high importance but since most blood-borne pathogen transmissions in the healthcare industry are caused by needle-stick injuries, protection from sharp invasive instruments should also be of high concern. And since latex and alike provide no protection against needle-stick injuries, new protective systems need to be developed and evaluated. This part of the study provides a review regarding the current practice of protection and the serious problems that arise from needle-flick injuries. Additionally, the development of new protective system is described. In part II of the study, evaluation of the new system will be provided.

  • This paper proposes a new fault isolation methodology for a smart protective device which plays an agent role on the smart grid distribution system with the distributed generation. It, by itself, determines accurately whether its protection zone is fault or not, identifies the fault zone and separates the fault zone through the exchange of fault information such as the current information and the voltage information with other protective devices using bi-directional communication capabilities on the smart grid distribution system. The heuristic rules are obtained from the structure and electrical characteristics determined according to the location of the fault and DG (Distributed Generation) when faults such as single-phase ground fault, phase-to-phase short fault and three-phase short fault occur on the smart grid distribution system with DG.
