  • In order to find the structural characteristics of the thin films of group II-VI semiconductor compounds compared with those of powder materials, films were made of 4 powders of ZnS, CdS, CdSe, and CdTe(Aldrich), each with 99.99 % purity. For the ZnS/CdS multi-layers, the ZnS layer was coated over the CdS layer on an $AlO_x$ membrane, which served as a protective layer within a vacuum at the average speed of 1 ${\AA}$/sec. After studying the structures of the group II-VI semiconductor thin films by using X-ray spectroscopy, we found that the ZnS, ZnS/CdS, CdS, and CdSe films were hexagonal and exhibited some degree of preferred orientation. Also, the particles of the thin films of II-VI semiconductor compounds proved to be more homogeneous in size compared to those of the powder materials. These results were further verified through scanning electron microscopy(SEM), EDX analysis, and powder and thin film X-ray diffraction.

  • In this study, the etched trench properties including cross-sectional profile, surface roughness, and crystalline defects were investigated depending on the various silicon etching and additive gases, For the case of HBr$He-O_2SiF_4$ trench etching gas mixtures, the excellent trench profile and minimum defects in the silicon trench were achieved. Due to the residual oxide film grown by the additive oxygen gas, which acts as a protective layer during trench etching, the undercut and defects generation in the trench were suppressed. To improve the electrical characteristics of trench gate, the hydrogen annealing process after trench etching was also adopted. Through the hydrogen annealing, the trench corners might be rounded by the silicon atomic migration at the trench corners having high potential. The rounded trench corner can afford to reduce the gate electric field and grow a uniform gate oxide. As a result, dielectric strength and TDDB characteristics of the hydrogen annealed trench gate oxide were remarkably increased compared to the non-hydrogen annealed one.

  • A sputter-sublimation source was tested for high rate deposition of protective coating of PEMFC(polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell) with high electrical conductivity and anti-corrosion capability by DC biasing of a metal rod immersed in inductively coupled plasma. A SUS(stainless steel) tube, rod were tested for low thermal conductivity materials and copper for high thermal conductivity ones. At 10 mTorr of Ar ICP(inductively coupled plasma) with 2.4 MHz, 300 W, the surface temperature of a SUS rod reached to $1,289^{\circ}C$ with a dc bias of 150 W (-706 V, 0.21 A) in 2 mins. For 10 min of sputter-sublimation, 0.1 gr of SUS rod was sputter-sublimated which is a good evidence of a high rate deposition source. ICP is used for sputter-sublimation of a target material, for substrate pre-treatment, film quality improvement by high energy particle bombardment and reactive deposition.

  • The ZnS/CdS thin films were made using 99.99% ZnS and CdS(Aldrich) powders in $7{\times}10^{-6}torr$. The ZnS layer was coated over the CdS layer on an AlOx membrane within a vacuum, at the average speed of $1{\AA}/sec$. After studying the ZnS/CdS and CdS thin films(both with the dimensions of 2.52nm), using fluorescence spectroscopy and comparing the respective results together, we found that although both of the resulting spectra peaked at 390nm, the ZnS/CdS thin films showed a narrower peak, and a higher intensity of photoluminescence than the CdS thin films. The particles of ZnS/CdS thin films also proved to be more homogeneous in size. In addition, the ZnS layer acted as a protective layer. Also, after studying the spectra of ZnS/CdS thin films taken 30 days after their preparation, we found no signs of aging. These results were verified through the scanning electron microscopy(SEM), EDX analysis, thin film X-ray diffraction, and luminescence spectroscopy.

  • In this study, two novel Schiff base compounds including (3-(4-Chlorophenyl isoxazole-5-yl) methanol and (3-(2,4 dichlorophenol isoxazole-5-yl) methanol as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in 1 M hydrochloric acid solution were investigated by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and density functional theory (DFT) computations. The results showed that the corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE) is remarkably enhanced with the growing concentration of the Schiff base inhibitors. The results from Tafel polarization and EIS methods showed that IE decreases with gradual increments of temperature. This process can be attributed to the displacement of the adsorption/desorption balance and hence to the diminution of the level of a surface coating. Also, the adsorption of two inhibitors over mild steel followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Too, the results of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed that the Schiff base inhibitors form an excellent protective film over mild steel and verified the results by electrochemical techniques. Additionally, the results from the experimental and those from DFT computations are in excellent accordance.

  • The corrosion inhibition of cast iron in 1 M HCl by Phenanthroline (Phen) was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), surface analysis and theoretical calculations. It is found that Phen exhibits high inhibition activity towards the corrosive action of HCl and its adsorption obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The results showed that inhibition efficiency increases with Phen concentration up to a maximum value of 96% at 1.4 mM, and decreases slightly with the increase in temperature. The free adsorption energy value indicates that Phen adsorbs on cast iron surface in 1 M HCl via a simultaneous physisorption and chemisorption mechanism. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of a protective film on cast iron surface, resulting in the improvement of its corrosion resistance in the studied aggressive solution. Quantum chemical calculations at the DFT level were achieved to correlate electronic structure parameters of Phen molecules with their adsorption mode.

  • Galvalume steel (GL) is widely used in marine and industrial environments. It is characterized by better corrosion resistance than carbon steel. However, corrosion and economic losses may occur as the usage time is increased. Therefore, in this study, an outdoor exposure test of GL for 36 months was conducted across six regions of Korea. Parameters such as corrosion rate, chrominance (color, chroma, and brightness), glossiness, and surface appearance were analyzed. The results showed no significant change in appearance, and the initial corrosion rate was large, but a tendency to decrease with time was observed. Increased outdoor exposure time led to increase in the level of corrosion products. In the case of coastal areas where S, Cl, and other elements were detected, a relatively high decrease in Zn content was observed. Al forms a protective oxide film and exists in the coating layer, but Zn dissolves due to its chemical activity and low potential.

  • The aim of this paper is to study corrosion inhibition of Aluminum with Capparis decidua extract. The study was performed in a 1.0 M solution of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and was monitored both by measuring mass loss and by using electrochemical and polarization methods. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique was also applied for surface morphology analysis. The results revealed high inhibition efficiency of Capparis decidua extract. Our data also determined that efficiency is governed by temperature and concentration of extract. Optimum (88.2%) inhibitor efficiency was found with maximum extract concentration at 45 o C. The results also showed a slight diminution of aluminum dissolution when the temperature is low. Based on the Langmuir adsorption model, Capparis decidua adsorption on the aluminum surface shows a high regression coefficient value. From the results, the activation enthalpy (∆H#) and activation entropy (∆S#) were estimated and discussed. In conclusion, the study clearly shows that Capparis decidua extract acted against aluminum corrosion in acidic media by forming a protective film on top of the aluminum surface.

  • Titanium exhibits substantial corrosion resistance, strength, and ductility, with a specific gravity of approximately 4.5 and a melting point of approximately 1800℃. It is currently used in aircraft parts and space development. This study considered the thermal characteristics, stealth effects of infrared thermal imaging cameras, electromagnetic shielding, and electrical conductivity of Ti-sputtered materials. Base materials of different densities and types were treated using titanium sputtering. Infrared thermal imaging showed a better stealth effect when the titanium layer was directed toward the outside. The film sample presented a better stealth effect than the fabrics did. In each of the samples subjected to titanium sputtering, when the titanium layer was directed outward, the untreated sample or exposed titanium layer showed surface temperatures lower than those of the samples with the titanium layer oriented toward the heat source. Additionally, after the titanium sputtering treatment, the films conducted electricity (low resistance) better than the fabrics did. All titanium-sputtered specimens presented reduced electromagnetic wave transmission and significantly reduced infrared transmission. These results are expected to apply to military uniforms (soldiers' protective clothing to gain the upper hand on the battlefield), medical sensors, multifunctional intelligent textiles and etc.

  • A protective oxide layer forms on the material surfaces of a Nuclear Power Plant during operation due to high temperature. These oxides can host radionuclides, the activated corrosion products of fission products, resulting in decommissioning workers' exposure. These deposited oxides are iron oxides such as Fe3O4, Fe2O3 and mixed ferrites such as nickel ferrites, chromium ferrites, and cobalt ferrites. Developing a new chemical decontamination technology for domestic CANDU-type reactors is challenging due to variations in oxide compositions from different structural materials in a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) system. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has already developed a chemical decontamination process for PWRs called 'HyBRID' (Hydrazine-Based Reductive metal Ion Decontamination) that does not use organic acids or organic chelating agents at all. As the first step to developing a new chemical decontamination technology for the Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) system, we investigated magnetite dissolution behaviors in various HyBRID inorganic acidic solutions to assess their applicability to the PHWR reactor system, which forms a thicker oxide film.
