  • The SI unit of specific absorption rate (SAR) in W/kg in the electromagnetic (EM) field as non-ionizing radiation is exactly same as the SI unit of absorbed dose rate in Gy/s in the ionizing radiation field. The SI unit of both physical quantities can be expressed in $[m^{\cdot}s^{-3}]$. Where, the unit of absorbed dose, Gy stands for Gray. In EM biological interactions, the SAR equations are derived and the characteristics of EM field energy absorption in terms of the SAR are discussed and described on the mathematical basis.

  • As it has been reported that more than 60% of transmission line faults occurs due to lightning strokes, lighting is one of concerned issues in electric power utility company. Most of transmission line is double circuit in Korea. Double circuit outages account for 33.7 percent of total lightning faults from 1996 to 2004. Even though transmission fault might be cleared shortly by protective system, it could deteriorate the power quality accompanied with sag or flicker. Moreover, double circuit fault may lead to more aggravated situation, for instance, blackout. To Protect transmission lines from lightning stroke, reduction of tower footing resistance, multiple ground wires and unbalanced insulation in double circuit lines have been adopted. In this paper, we would like to introduce insulation design standards for lightning protection of Korea Electric Power Corporation.

  • Measurement of Co-60 gamma rays has been made for establishment of exposure standard and analyze it's overall uncertainties. Exposure rate determined by the charge mode method using vibrating reed amplifier with cylinderical type cavity chamber. The values of a variety of physical constants and the correction factors are evaluated. The resulting exposure rate is 690.81 R/h at the distance of 1m from the source and the related uncertainties is ${\pm}0.8%$

  • Much activity is occurring throughout the world with respect to the implementation of new concepts and technology for fire detection and fire suppression applications. Obvious advances include tangible detection and suppression improvements, and also new methods and approaches such as performance based codes and standards. Examples of tangible advances include addressable detection systems, wireless detection technology, halon alternatives, water mist systems, advanced sprinkler technology, and so on. Examples of new approaches and methods include a revitalized focus on disaster planning and the need for a total fire protection plan. The concept of performance based codes and standards for the design and installation fire detection and suppression systems will be explored in detail.

  • In order to establish the national standards of neutron measurements, a manganese sulphate ($MnSO_4$) bath system was developed under the IAEA technical support. This bath system was made up of a spherical s.s. 316 L bath, of 3.5 mm thick and of 125 cm internal diagmeter, filled with a manganese sulphate solution, a solution circulating system, and a $^5Mn\;{\gamma}-ray$ monitoring system. The solution pumped from the bath was introduced into a Marinelli beaker-type monitor vessel which was equipped with two seperate detectors, $3.8cm{\phi}{\times}3.8cm$ NaI(T1) crystals. The performance of the system were tested using the neutron sources, $^{241}Am-Be\;and\;^{252}Cf$, mounted at the center of the bath. From the decay curve analysis of $^{56}Mn$ activity, neutron emission rate of $^{252}Cf$ by the comparative method was obtained to be $3.71{\times}10^7\;n/s\;per\;50{mu}g$ as of November 15, 1985.

  • Background: Methodologies for a series of radiological consequence assessments show a distinctive difference according to the design principles of the original nuclear suppliers and their technical standards to be imposed. This is due to the uncertainties of the accidental source term, radionuclide behavior in the environment, and subsequent radiological dose. Both types of PWR and PHWR are operated in Korea. However, technical standards for evaluating atmospheric dispersion have been enacted based on the U.S. NRC's positions regardless of the reactor types. For this reason, it might cause a controversy between the licensor and licensee of a nuclear power plant. Materials and Methods: It was modelled under the framework of the NRC Regulatory Guide 1.145 for light-water reactors, reflecting the features of heavy-water reactors as specified in the Canadian National Standard and the modelling features in MACCS2, such as atmospheric diffusion coefficient, ground deposition, surface roughness, radioactive plume depletion, and exposure from ground deposition. Results and Discussion: An integrated accident consequence assessment code, ACCESS (Accident Consequence Assessment Code for Evaluating Site Suitability), was developed by taking into account the unique regulatory positions for reactor types under the framework of the current Korean technical standards. Field tracer experiments and hand calculations have been carried out for validation and verification of the models. Conclusion: The modelling approaches of ACCESS and its features are introduced, and its applicative results for a hypothetical accidental scenario are comprehensively discussed. In an applicative study, the predicted results by the light-water reactor assessment model were higher than those by other models in terms of total doses.

  • The purpose of this study was to discuss the role of mothers in children's privacy protection on the Internet. Specifically, the study explored 1)children's privacy protection efforts on the Internet, 2)types of personal information children provided at Web sites, and 3)the effect of mothers' privacy protection efforts on their children's privacy protection levels. The Internet survey was conducted and total of 153 mothers and their children aged 12-13 were included for statistical analysis. The descriptive statistics and Ordinary Least Squares were used. The results yield that children showed relatively high levels in providing personal information on the Internet, while they have no sufficient competency at privacy protection. The effect of mothers' privacy protection efforts on children's privacy protection was partially supported. The longer hours of Internet use and frequent participation in online events increased the potential consequences of children's privacy invasion. Providing privacy standards for online service providers and marketers targeting children could help protect children's privacy. Moreover, education program targeting parents and children could contribute them reduce potential consequences of children's privacy invasion.

  • This paper presented future power system protection technologies through the HW/SW integration platform with IEC 61850 and IEEE c37.238 standards. To determine the implementation performance of the integrated platform, an example of EVM (Evaluation Module) was constructed to satisfy the standards. The platform has been identified as a future power system integrated IED(Intelligent Electronic Device) HW/SW technology that meets the level of error required by the time sync standard and the level of delay required by protecting the power system.
