The purpose of this study was to determine the appropriate temperature for water curtain in greenhouses equipped with recirculated water curtain system. The study analyzed the changes in air temperature in non-heated greenhouses for strawberry cultivation based on outdoor temperature, water curtain temperature and night time. Three greenhouse units were used for this study: The first unit was assigned as a control (no water curtain system), two other greenhouses were equipped with recirculated water curtain system with water curtain temperatures of $10^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$, respectively. Analysis showed that the indoor temperatures were directly correlated with the outdoor temperature in all experimental greenhouses. Heat insulating effect of $15^{\circ}C$ water curtain was increased by $1.3^{\circ}C$ compared to that in $10^{\circ}C$ water curtain system. The $15^{\circ}C$ water curtain treatment showed the highest average temperature and less temperature variation in comparison with control and $10^{\circ}C$ water curtain treatment. To maintain indoor temperature at $5^{\circ}C$, water curtain temperature of $10^{\circ}C$ was suitable when outdoor minimum and average temperatures were -1.3 and $1.5^{\circ}C$, and water curtain temperature of $15^{\circ}C$ was suitable when outdoor minimum and average temperatures were -4.7 and $-0.2^{\circ}C$, respectively. The highest temperature in greenhouses according to measurements in different periods of night time was observed after sunset (18:30-20:30), and the lowest temperature before sunrise (05:00-07:00). Water curtain maintained a target indoor temperature by acting as a layer of heat transfer insulator which decreased heat loss from greenhouses. Therefore, water temperature in recirculating water curtain systems should be determined by considering outdoor temperatures, changes in temperature at different periods of night time, and cultivated crop.

The attraction effects of light emitting diode (LED) trap to Spodoptera exigua and Spodoptera litura adults were evaluated in greenhouse and compared with those of no light trap, which is typical used in commercial trap. At this time, in order to attract these two species of moths, sex pheromone traps were installed at the top side according to the degree of tomato growth inside the tomato cultivation greenhouse around the LED trap. In addition, two types of light-emitting traps (420 nm, 470 nm) were installed in the greenhouse at 1/40 m2, respectively. Also two sex pheromone were installed inside of the greenhouse according to the height of the tomato plants. 10 days later, Blue-light trap(BLB, 470 nm wavelength) was 3.1-3.5 times more attractive than Violet-light trap(VLB, 420 nm wavelength) in S. exigua (105.6 ± 7.3) and S. litura (42.0 ± 3.1) respectively, whereas the no-light trap was little attractive to S. exigua (33.7 ± 2.8) and S. litura (12.0 ± 1.5). On the other hand, after the installation of the sex pheromone trap and the LED trap, there was no damage to S. litura (Fabricius) and S. exigua in the pesticide-free area, indicating a high possibility of control. At this time, the operating cost of the two types of LED traps was 80 won/m2 per unit area, and it was confirmed that both types of moths could be controlled. In addition, as a result of confirming the number of two types of moths caught in the sexual pheromone trap and two types of LED traps after 4 months, it was judged that eco-friendly control was possible as more than 373 moths/trap were attracted to the two types of moths.
This study was conducted to improve light environment of oriental melon cultivation in winter season. Three polyolefin foreign films (J-1, J-2, J-3) and three polyethylene domestic films (K-1, K-2, K-3) with different film thickness, ultraviolet ray interception and infrared ray absorption were used. As the result of this experiment, soluble solid of oriental melon fruit in K-3 was $14.3^{\circ}Brix$, those in J-3 and J-2 were higher by 1.3 and $0.8^{\circ}Brix$, respectively. Chromaticity (a value) of pericarp in K-3 was 0.5, those in J-3, J-1 and J-2 were higher by 3.3, 2.3 and 1.9, respectively. Especially, fermented and malformed fruit rates in J-1, J-2 and J-3 were decreased and marketable fruit rates were increased. Marketable yield in K-3 was 1,622 kg per 10a, those in J-1, J-3 and J-2 were increased by 31.2%, 23.8% and 18.5% compare to K-3, respectively. In this study, Polyolefin films (J-1, J-2, J-3) with thickness and infrared ray absorption ratio keeping higher heat conservation, therefore, soluble solid and chromaticity of fruit were increased, fermented fruit rate was decreased, and marketable fruit rate and yield were increased.
This experiment was conducted to improve light environment of oriental melon cultivation in winter season. Three polyolefin (J-1, J-2 and J-3), two polyethylene (K-1 and K-2) films and K-3 commonly used in farmhouses, with different film thickness, ultraviolet ray interception and infrared ray absorption ratio were used. Heat conservation of J-2 was highest, compare to K-3, J-3 and J-1. Early growth of J-1, J-2 and J-3 were faster than K-3, and Days required to harvest of K-3 were shortened about 10 days. Marketable yield of K-3 was 991kg per 10a, those of J-1, J-2, J-3, K-1 and K-2 were increased 21%, 37%, 24%, 13% and 4% compare to K-3, respectively. Especially, harvesting of J-1, J-2, J-3 and K-1 were focused on early (50%) and middle stage (40%). Polyolefin with higher heat conservation improved growth and harvesting in early and shortened days to harvesting in winter season.
Weed control is of fundamental importance when planting cereal crops, particularly during the establishment phase. Weeds compete for nutrients, water and light, and can severely threaten the survival and early growth of newly planted crops. Field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of ethanol treatment on the weed control efficacy in cereal crops in protected vinylhouse. Five treatments like water, 25 L, 50 L, 75 L, and 100 L per $m^{-2}$ at 2% ethanol were applied and covered with vinyl on 10 days before foxtail millet seeding. After that, foxtail millet seeds were sown on June 20 at $60{\times}10cm$ planting distance and weed control efficacy was recorded at 30, and 50 days after seeding based on the dry weight. Soil oxidation-reduction potential was recorded -200~-400 mV after treatment 2 days. Weed control efficacy of at 75 L, and 100 L per $m^{-2}$ was observed 92%, 84% in 2% ETOH, respectively. Yields of foxtail millet at 75 L, and 100 L per $m^{-2}$ were 1,570 kg $ha^{-1}$, 1,230 kg $ha^{-1}$, respectively.

In sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) growing there are several severe problem which have to be overcome to produce highly graded fruits because of fruit rots and fruit crackings, if there is frequent precipitation during immature fruit step and picking season. In order to reduce fungicide sprayings and produce qualified fruits in areas with rainy season like as South Korea, rain-sheltered growing is necessary absolutely. Sweet cherry blooms early to medium April in southern area of South Korea. If we depend on honeybees (Apis mellifera) distributed in natural ecosystem, it is not easy to get normal fruit-set every season because of low temperature around blooming time. And also bee keepers seldom sell honeybee hives as a pollinator during spring, instead they keep honeybee hives to get honey. Recently use of B. terrestris as a pollinator of cherry tomato, oriental pumpkin etc. grown in protected cultivation system increase abundantly. Therefore, in this study we studied B. terrestris as an alternate of honeybee to pollinate sweet cherry grown in rain shelter. In part of foraging activity B. terrestris shows staying on a cherry flower for about six second and visiting frequency of 11 flowers per minute. However A. mellifera stayed about 15 second on a flower and visited 4~5 flowers per minute. There were no significant difference in fruit-setting rate and fruit characteristics after using B. terrestris and A. mellifera as pollinators of sweet cherry. Consequently there is no negative effect when we use B. terrestris as an alternate pollinator of A. mellifera in sweet cherry cultivation under rain shelter.
Differences among cultivars, conditions of nutrient solution, nursing materials, and soilless culture systems were investigated to select suitable cultivar and cultivation methods for stable production of summer spinach in the highlands. The 'Quinto' spinach showed the earliest growth and highest yield. For yield increase of summer spinach, optimal solution pH was 6.0, EC was $2.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, and $NH_4-N$ ratio of nutrient solution was 30 percent Stand rate of spinach in nursing seedlings, at 200-cell-tray filled with mixed nursing soil (peat : perlite = 7 : 3), was higher than those grown in urethane sponge and rock-wool plug. Yield was also 18 to 24 percent higher than those in rock-wool plug and urethane sponge. Plant length and yield of spinach in mixed substrate (peat : perlite = 7 : 3) filled nutrient film technique (MSNFT) system were longer of 18 percent, and higher of 9 percent than those in deep flow technique (DFT) system, respectively. However, changes of root zone temperature, pH and EC showed similar pattern with DFT. Therefore, growing 'Quinto' cultivar at 6.0 of pH, $2.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ of EC, 30 percent of $NH_4-N$ ratio, at 200-cell-tray filled with mixed nursing soil, and MSNFT cultivation system, was the best for production of summer spinach in the highlands.
For reducing the residual effects of Quinclorac to followed-by crops of paddy rice, three tests by different soil improvers, different cultural performances with tillage and application of composts, and cultivation of different depletion crops were evaluated, respectively. Among seven soil improvers, activated carbon, composts and perlite showed significant promisable feasibility to reduce phytotoxicity of tomato seedlings as affected by Quinclorac residuals, And comparing to untreated check, the application of tillage and composts prior to transplanting of tomato seedling could helpful to reduce Quinclorac residuals in the soil, but tomato and lettuce, most susceptible crops to Quinclorac, were not remarkably protected by those cultural performances. Also among cultivation of depletion crops just after rice harvest, Italian ryegrass, tall fescue, rape and oats engaged to deplete and reduce Quinclorac residuals for tomato seedling growth, however alfalfa and hairy vetch, relatively susceptible plants to Quinclorac were not promisable.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of anaerobic fermentation of wheat bran to prevent root-knot nematodes which are infected in plastic house due to over 10 years continuous cultivation of fruits and vegetables. Anaerobic fermentation treatment of wheat bran was done for 20 days by mixture of 2,000 kg fresh wheat bran per 10 are and soil with water in 30 cm soil depth. Chemical treatment of fosthiazate was done by mixture of 6 kg soil for 7 days. Both treatments show suppression of density of rootknot nematodes, especially in anaerobic fermentation treatment. Anaerobic fermentation treatment keeps the low level of root-knot nematode density until 90 days of cultivation and also showed good effect of melon growth. Related with death percentage of melon plant, anaerobic fermentation treatment shows only 3% and also large size of quality fruit but control 65%. Anaerobic fermentation treatment of wheat bran have proved to control the level of root-knot nematodes instead of synthetic chemicals for at least one cropping season and it showed good effect to fruit quality.

Different timings of coverage by a small paper bag at the young fruit stage were tested in order to evaluate the effect on the protection of fruit damage occurred by disease or pest, and quality deterioration during organic cultivation of 'Hwasan' (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) pear cultivar. The occurrence of four major moth populations and two major diseases in pears were monitored from April to September 2015. Among major moths and diseases, Grapholita molesta and pear rust were found often in the organic pear orchard, and they were observed frequently in May. Coverage by a small paper bag at the young fruit stage resulted in better fruit quality and a higher proportion of commercial fruits compared to a coverage timing of conventional paper bag. Interestingly, the fastest coverage timing of a small paper bag at the young fruit stage (when it was covered in April) showed the lowest occurrence of damaged fruits, which indicates that it successfully protected fruits from the damage caused by moths and diseases during April and May. Moreover, this timing of small paper bag coverage did not negatively affect the major qualitative and quantitative characteristics of fruits. These results suggest that early coverage by a small paper bag at the young fruit stage can be considered an efficient management strategy for organic cultivation of 'Hwasan' pear cultivar.
