  • This paper aims to estimate the range of the excavation damaged zone (EDZ) formation caused by the tunnel boring machine (TBM) advancement through dynamic three-dimensional large deformation finite element analysis. Large deformation analysis based on Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) analysis is used to accurately simulate the behavior during TBM excavation. The analysis model is verified based on numerous test results reported in the literature. The range of the formed EDZ will be suggested as a boundary under various conditions - different tunnel diameter, tunnel depth, and rock type. Moreover, evaluation of the integrity of the tunnel structure during excavation has been carried out. Based on the numerical results, the apparent boundary of the EDZ is shown to within the range of 0.7D (D: tunnel diameter) around the excavation surface. Through series of numerical computation, it is clear that for the rock of with higher rock mass rating (RMR) grade (close to 1st grade), the EDZ around the tunnel tends to increase. The size of the EDZ is found to be direct proportional to the tunnel diameter, whereas the depth of the tunnel is inversely proportional to the magnitude of the EDZ. However, the relationship between the formation of the EDZ and the stability of the tunnel was not found to be consistent. In case where the TBM excavation is carried out in hard rock or rock under high confinement (excavation under greater depth), large range of the EDZ may be formed, but less strain occurs along the excavation surface during excavation and is found to be more stable.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of applied tensile force and temperature on the permeability of magnetic flux in prestressing steel. The permeability of magnetic flux is the ratio at which the magnetic flux between two points passes. The prestressing steel used in these experiments included a 7-mm PS wire mainly used for cable-stayed bridges and a 12.7-mm PS strand for prestressed concrete bridges. The experiments to extract the permeability of the magnetic flux of steel wire and strand were conducted under various tensile levels and temperature conditions. From the experimental results, it was observed that the permeability of magnetic flux of the PS tension material was linearly proportional to the applied tensile stress level, and inversely proportional to the temperature. If the experimental relationship among the magnetic permeability, temperature, and prestressing ratio of a PS tension material is known in advance, the current tension stress level on PS members can be evaluated by measuring solely the magnetic permeability and temperature.

  • The stability of the roof rock-coal pillar-floor rock composite structure is of great significance to coal mine safety production. The cracks existing in the composite structure seriously affect the stability of the roof rock-coal pillar-floor rock composite structure. The numerical simulation tests of rock-coal-rock composite structures with different crack characteristics were carried out to reveal the composite structures' mechanical properties and failure mechanisms. The test results show that the rock-coal-rock composite structure's peak stress and elastic modulus are directly proportional to the crack angle and inversely proportional to the crack length. The smaller the crack angle, the more branch cracks produced near the main control crack in the rock-coal-rock composite structure, and the larger the angle between the main control crack and the crack. The smaller the crack length, the larger the width of the crack zone. The impact energy index of the rock-coal-rock composite structure decreases first and then increases with the increase of crack length and increases with the increase of crack angle. The functional relationships between the different crack characteristics, peak stress, and impact energy index are determined based on the sensitivity analysis. The determination of the functional relationship can fully grasp the influence of the crack angle and the crack length on the peak stress and impact energy index of the coal-rock composite structure. The research results can provide a theoretical basis and guidance for preventing the instability and failure of the coal pillar-roof composite structure.

  • In this study, the three species (Populus euramericana, Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis) were cut to difference (0, 0.15, 0.3, 0.45 mm) between the size of tip and that of root of the finger (DSTR) and jointed with poly vinyl acetate (PVA) and resorcinol-phenol resin (RPR). We described the relationship between the bending strength properties of finger DSTR and the acoustic emission (AE) generated during the bending test. The results were as follows: The AE generation time of finger-jointed specimens with RPR adhesive was earlier than that with PVA adhesive. The AE cumulative event count of finger-jointed specimens with RPR adhesive continuously increased with increasing load and the event count was much more than that with PVA adhesive. Also, the AE cumulative event count for resorcinol-phenol resin adhesive obtained from low load level was abundant. The AE wave in finger-jointed specimens with RPR adhesive could be detected in the below proportional limit load. Therefore, AE signals from bending test are useful for the estimation of strength in finger DSTR specimens.

  • Artificial intelligence is expanding its reach throughout our society, and education is no exception to its scope of application. In line with this trend, we conducted a computer programming class for teachers in graduate school. The final purpose of this class is to develop the programming skills of teachers who teach students to code artificial intelligence programs. This paper studies how the logical thinking and mental consistency of teachers, who are learners, are related to programming aptitude and describes education environmental factors of the class. It was confirmed that logical thinking and mental consistency were proportional to the programming score. This proportional relationship is expected to apply to students learning programming languages. When team formation is required in programming classes, it is expected that better learning effects will be achieved if students with excellent logical thinking and mental consistency are included in each team.

  • Objective: To investigate the usefulness of computed tomography (CT) texture analysis (CTTA) in estimating histologic tumor grade and in predicting disease-free survival (DFS) after surgical resection in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Materials and Methods: Eighty-one patients with a single HCC who had undergone quadriphasic liver CT followed by surgical resection were enrolled. Texture analysis of tumors on preoperative CT images was performed using commercially available software. The mean, mean of positive pixels (MPP), entropy, kurtosis, skewness, and standard deviation (SD) of the pixel distribution histogram were derived with and without filtration. The texture features were then compared between groups classified according to histologic grade. Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards analyses were performed to determine the relationship between texture features and DFS. Results: SD and MPP quantified from fine to coarse textures on arterial-phase CT images showed significant positive associations with the histologic grade of HCC (p < 0.05). Kaplan-Meier analysis identified most CT texture features across the different filters from fine to coarse texture scales as significant univariate markers of DFS. Cox proportional hazards analysis identified skewness on arterial-phase images (fine texture scale, spatial scaling factor [SSF] 2.0, p < 0.001; medium texture scale, SSF 3.0, p < 0.001), tumor size (p = 0.001), microscopic vascular invasion (p = 0.034), rim arterial enhancement (p = 0.024), and peritumoral parenchymal enhancement (p = 0.010) as independent predictors of DFS. Conclusion: CTTA was demonstrated to provide texture features significantly correlated with higher tumor grade as well as predictive markers of DFS after surgical resection of HCCs in addition to other valuable imaging and clinico-pathologic parameters.

  • In this study, various laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the effect of the moisture conditions of Jeju basalt on the mechanical properties. Twenty specimens were produced respectively from basalts collected from Sangga-ri and Eoeum-ri in northwestern Jeju. The tests were performed under saturated and dry conditions, and the results of these tests were used to examine the relationship with the physical properties and the mechanical properties depending on the moisture conditions. As a result of analysis with the test results and references, it was found that the uniaxial compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength and elastic modulus in the saturated condition decrease at a similar ratio as compared with the dry condition. Also, the Brazilian tensile strength and the uniaxial compressive strength were in a linear proportional relationship, and in the moisture conditions, this relationship was not significantly affected.

  • It is necessary to decide the pumping rate and pumping well location together with the capture zone in order to determine an appropriate groundwater remediation strategy to manage the contaminated groundwater. The relationship between the capture zone and the drawdown radius of influence ($ROI_s$) was considered. $ROI_{cs}$ is defined as the distance where the criteria of drawdown is cs meter from pumping well in this paper. A method to decide the required pumping rate for the remediation of contaminated groundwater in order to create appropriate $ROI_{cs}$ is suggested by using the Theis equation (1935) and Cooper-Jacob equation (1946). It was shown in this study that $ROI_{cs}$ is in proportion to the pumping rate and the criteria of drawdown, which decides $ROI_{cs}$, is inversely proportional to Ti value (transmissivity ${\times}$ hydraulic gradient). The pumping rate which creates the required $ROI_{cs}$ could be planned through the relationship between the $ROI_{cs}$ and pumping rates ($ROI_{cs}$-Q curve) of the field sites 1, 2 and 3. If the drawdown is investigated along with Ti value and pumping rate at a specific site where pump and treat remediation is planned, it is expected that the required criteria of drawdown can be evaluated by using the relationship between the cs and Ti (cs-Ti curve).

  • Objective: The present study aimed to assess the relationship between incidental abnormalities on thoracic computed tomography (CT) and mortality in a general screening population using a long-term follow-up analysis. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively collected the medical records and CT images of 840 participants (mean age ± standard deviation [SD], 58.5 ± 6.7 years; 564 male) who underwent thoracic CT at a single health promotion center between 2007 and 2010. Two thoracic radiologists independently reviewed all CT images and evaluated any incidental abnormalities (interstitial lung abnormality [ILA], emphysema, coronary artery calcification [CAC], aortic valve [AV] calcification, and pulmonary nodules). Kaplan-Meier analysis with log-rank and z-tests was performed to assess the relationship between incidental CT abnormalities and all-cause mortality in the subsequent follow-up. Cox proportional hazards regression was performed to further identify risk factors of all-cause mortality among the incidental CT abnormalities and clinical factors. Results: Among the 840 participants, 55 (6%), 171 (20%), 288 (34%), 396 (47%), and 97 (11%) had findings of ILA, emphysema, CAC, pulmonary nodule, and AV calcification, respectively, on initial CT. The participants were followed up for a mean period ± SD of 10.9 ± 1.4 years. All incidental CT abnormalities were associated with all-cause mortality in univariable analysis (p < 0.05). However, multivariable analysis further revealed fibrotic ILA as an independent risk factor for all-cause mortality (hazard ratio, 2.52 [95% confidence interval, 1.02-6.22], p = 0.046). ILA were also identified as an independent risk factor for lung cancer or respiratory disease-related deaths. Conclusion: Incidental abnormalities on screening thoracic CT were associated with increased mortality during the long-term follow-up. Among incidental CT abnormalities, fibrotic ILA were independently associated with increased mortality. Appropriate management and surveillance may be required for patients with fibrotic ILA on thoracic CT obtained for general screening purposes.

  • In cases where the response variable in proportional data is confined to a limited interval, a regression model based on the assumption of normality can yield inaccurate results due to issues such as asymmetry and heteroscedasticity. In such cases, the beta regression model can be considered as an alternative. This model reparametrizes the beta distribution in terms of mean and precision parameters, assuming that the response variable follows a beta distribution. This allows for easy consideration of heteroscedasticity in the data. In this paper, we therefore aim to analyze proportional data using the beta regression model in two empirical analyses. Specifically, we investigate the relationship between smoking rates and coffee consumption using data from the 6th National Health Survey, and examine the association between regional characteristics in the U.S. and cumulative mortality rates based on COVID-19 data. In each analysis, we apply the ordinary least squares regression model, the beta regression model, and the extended beta regression model to analyze the data and interpret the results with the selected optimal model. The results demonstrate the appropriateness of applying the beta regression model and its extended version in proportional data.
