  • As considerable interests in noise emission from the ships have been increased, International Maritime Organization (IMO) standardized the Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) measurement process of commercial ships in deep seas by enacting the related ISO standard ISO 17208-1 and classification societies responded with the enactment or revision of corresponding notations. According to this trend, a new hybrid underwater sound propagation model based on underwater sound propagation theories was developed and its accuracy on analysis was verified through the result comparison with the results of other generally used models. Using the verified model, each URN propagation characteristics adjusted by the correction methods proposed in the ISO standard and class notations were analyzed and compared in two assumed URN measurement cases. The results showed that the effects of transmission loss corrections in the circumstances with less bottom reflections generally similar but they had rather large differences in the model analysis results with bottom-reflection-dominant conditions. It was concluded that the deep consideration of effective bottom-reflection-correction method should be made in future revisions of ISO standard and class notations.

  • This paper presents some advanced and supplemental methods to enhance the accuracy In case of calculating geometric divergence attenuation, attenuation by multiple screening structures, ground attenuation at unflat surfaces of sound during propagation outdoors by the methods specified in ISO 9613-2. Moreover, a calculation method for considering short-term wind effect, specified in ASJ Model-1998, is also introduced. To verity the accuracy of adopted methods, we have carried out highway traffic noise prediction and measurement at tile twelve locations appearing representative road shapes and structures, such as flat, retained cut, elevated, barrier-constructed roads. From the results, we have confirmed the predicted results show good correspondence with the measured at direct, diffracted and reflected sound fields within 30 m from the center of near side lane.

  • The ability to locate the defects in materials is one of the major attrations of the acoustic emission(AE) technique. The most conventional method for planar AE source localization is to place three or more AE sensors on the plate and to determine the source position by measuring the differences in the arrival times of the AE wave at the sensors, which is called as triangulation method. But this method can not be applied in the material of which elastic wave propagtion velocity is not known. In this paper, we propose two methods, vector method and error minimization method, for AE source location on the material with unknown AE wave velocity. In this method, it is not needed to know the propagation velocity previously, that is, we can apply this method to arbitrary material of which properties are not known exactly. Also, in this paper, the robustness to the error in the measurement of time differences are discussed for both methods. Finally, in order to evaluate the actual performances, experiments using a pencil lead break as the AE source were carried out on the aluminum plate.

  • We propose a hybrid method combining the implicit with the explicit methods in order to reduce the calculation time and improve the convergence problem of the 3-dimensional finite-difference beam propagation method. The numerical simulation of a directional coupler is carried out by the proposed method. It is found from the simulation results that the calculation speed of our method is 10 times faster than that of direct solving techniques.

  • Safe underground construction in a rock mass requires adequate ground investigation and effective determination of rock conditions. The estimation of rock mass behavior is difficult, because rock masses are innately anisotropic and heterogeneous at different scales and are affected by various environmental factors. Quantitative rock mass classification systems, such as the Q-system and rock mass rating, are widely used for characterization and engineering design. The measurement of rock classification parameters is subjective and can vary among observers, resulting in questionable accuracy. Geophysical investigation methods, such as seismic surveys, have also been used for ground characterization. Torsional shear wave propagation characteristics in cylindrical rods are equal to that in an infinite media. A probabilistic quantitative relationship between the Q-value and shear wave velocity is thus investigated considering long-wavelength wave propagation in equivalent continuum jointed rock masses. Individual Q-system parameters are correlated with stress-dependent shear wave velocities in jointed rocks using experimental and numerical methods. The relationship between the Q-value and the shear wave velocity is normalized using a defined reference condition. This relationship is further improved using probabilistic analysis to remove unrealistic data and to suggest a range of Q-values for a given wave velocity. The proposed probabilistic Q-value estimation is then compared with field measurements and cross-hole seismic test data to verify its applicability.

  • This paper aims to synthesize the research on fatigue mechanisms of high strength aluminum alloys which are widely used in motorcars or airplanes to prevent accidents. To measure the data of crack opening ratio, the same materials and methods are used for evaluating the fatigue crack propagation rate as an effective stress intensity factor. But, many researchers have brought different results. An exact crack opening ratio was, therefore, proposed for getting a more accurate fatigue crack propagation rate.

  • A 3D-ray tracing using triangular ray tubes for predicting propagation in indoor environments is presented. Employed ray tracing scheme needs no reception sphere often suffered from how to assign the correct radius as a touching ray on the receiver. To verify the developed codes path loss for a rectangular corridor has been computed, measured, and compared with those by image methods, all shows good agreement to each other. Discussions are made on the path loss fluctuations along the distance in a rectangular corridor having a conducting knife.

  • SAW filters were fabricated on $LiNbO_3$ substrates to evaluate frequency response and properties of photolithography. In the both of etch and lift-off methods, lift off method was superior to etch method in fabrication process. Frequency response property was measured by network analyzer. From measurement of acoustic property, SAW propagation velocity was 3574.9m/sec for $LiNbO_3$ SAW filter.

  • In trainir~ga back-propagation neural network, the learning speed of the network is greatly affected by its learning rate. Most of off-line fashioned learning-rate selection methods, however, are empirical except for some deterministic methods. It is very tedious and difficult to find a good learning rate using the empirical methods. The deterministic methods cannot guarantee the quality of the quality of the learning rate. This paper proposes a new learning-rate selection method. Our off-line fashioned method selects a good learning rate through stochastically searching process using evolutionary programming. The simulation results show that the learning speed achieved by our method is superior to that of deterministic and empirical methods.
