The elastic wave equation is solved using the finite-difference method in 3D space to simulate the seismic wave propagation. It is based on the velocity-stress formulation of the equation of motion on a staggered grid. The nonreflecting boundary conditions are used to attenuate the wave field close to the numerical boundary. To satisfy the stress-free conditions at the free-surface boundary, a new formulation combining the zero-stress formalism with the vacuum one is applied. The effective media parameters are employed to satisfy the traction continuity condition across the media interface. With use of the moment-tensor components, the wide range of source mechanism parameters can be specified. The numerical experiments are carried out in order to test the applicability and accuracy of this scheme and to understand the fundamental features of the wave propagation under the generalized elastic media structure. Computational results show that the scheme is sufficiently accurate for modeling wave propagation in 3D elastic media and generates all the possible phases appropriately in under the given heterogeneous velocity structure. Also the characteristics of the ground motion in an sedimentary basin such as the amplification, trapping, and focusing of the elastic wave energy are well represented. These results demonstrate the use of this simulation method will be helpful for modeling the ground motion of seismological and engineering purpose like earthquake hazard assessment, seismic design, city planning, and etc..

Near-threshold fatigue crack-growth behavior at room temperature for a duplex stainless steel weldments was investigated to evaluate the effect of load ratio, microstructural change, and residual stresses. Near-threshold fatigue crack propagation behavior is found to show a marked sensitivity to .alpha./.gamma. phase ratio, and little residual stress effects. Threshold values in the heat affected zones are higher than those of base metals and threshold values for crack growth decrease with increasing the load ratio in the base metals and weldments. The fractrographic features in base metals, weldments and heat affectred zones were discussed in terms mechanism of crack growth.
The bedding plane has a significant influence on the effect of blasting fragmentation and the overall performance of underground mining. This paper explores the effects of fragmentation of the bedding plane and different angles by using the numerical analysis. ANSYS/LS-DYNA code was used for the implementation of the models. The models include a dynamic compressive and tensile failure which is applied to simulate the fractures generated by the explosion. Firstly, the cracks propagation with the non-bedding plane in the coal with two boreholes detonated simultaneously is calculated and the particle velocity and maximum principal stress at different points from the borehole are also discussed. Secondly, different delay times between the two boreholes are calculated to explore its effects on the propagation of the fractures. The results indicate that the coal around the right borehole is broken more fully and the range of the cracks propagation expanded with the delay time increases. The peak particle velocity decreases first and then increases with the distance from the right borehole increasing. Thirdly, different angles between the bedding plane and the centerline of the two boreholes and the transmission coefficient of stress wave at a bedding plane are considered. The results indicated that with the angles increase, the number of the fractures decreases while the transmission coefficient increases.

As accidents with thermal runaway (TR) of lithium-ion batteries occur sporadically, the safety concern is the main obstacle that hinders the large-scale applications of lithium ion batteries. In most accidents, the TR of a single cell occurred first, and then dissipated the heat to the surroundings and triggered the TR of adjacent cells, resulting in TR propagation. Therefore, it is important to understand the mechanism of TR propagation and determine the key parameters during TR propagation in a battery pack. In this study, we performed a numerical analysis on the thermal runaway phenomenon by cathode active materials and appearance sizes in cylindrical lithium-ion batteries using a two-dimensional analysis model. The model results showed that the TR propagation of 21700 type cells (21 mm diameter, 70 mm height) occurs more rapidly than 46800 type cells (46 mm diameter, 80 mm height) and the LFP cell has higher thermal safety than the NCM cell. Especially, we found that the effect of the separator on the occurrence of TR is negligible.

Following a loss of coolant accident (LOCA), prestressing concrete containment vessels (PCCVs) may experience high thermal load as well as internal pressure. The high temperature stress would increase the risk of premature damage to the containment, which reduces the safety margin during the increasing internal pressure. However, current investigations cannot clearly address the issues of thermal-pressure coupling effect on damage propagation and thus safety of the containment. Thus, this paper offers three simple and powerful damage parameters to differentiate the severity of damage of the containment. Moreover, despite of the temperature action severely threatening the pressure performance of the containment, the research regarding the improvement of the resistant performance of the containment is quite scarce. Therefore, in this paper, a comprehensive comparison of damage propagation and mechanism between conventional and fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) containments is performed. The effects of fiber characteristics parameters on damage propagation of structures following the LOCA are also specifically revealed. It is found that the proposed damage indices can properly indicate state of damage in the containment body and the addition of fiber can be used to obviously mitigate the damage propagation in PCCV considering the thermal-pressure coupling.

The cationic polymerization of energetic substituted oxetanes which have pendant energetic group such as azido and nitrato are investigated theoretically, using semiempirical HF/3-21G, MINDO/3, MNDO and AM1 method. The stereo- and electronic structure of binary molecular complex composed of energetic substituted oxetane and boron trifluoride can be explain by molecular orbital theory. The reactivity of propagation in the copolymerization of oxetanes can be presented by the positive charge on carbon(C2) atom of oxetane and energy level of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital(LUMO) of propagating species of oxetanes. The reactivity ratios for copolymerization of oxetanes are a random copolymer-zation which is agree with MO calculated and experimental results. The relative equlibrium concentration of cyclic oxonium and open carbenium ions is found to be a major determinant of mechanism, owing to the rapid equilibrium of these cation forms and the expectation based on calculation that in the prepolymer propagation step, SN1 mechanism will be at least as fast as that for SN2 mechanism.
Spinning detonations propagating in a circular tube were numerically investigated with a one-step irreversible reaction model governed by Arrhenius kinetics. Activation energy is used as parameter as 10, 20, 27 and 35, and the specific heat ratio and the heat release are fixed as 1.2 and 50. The time evolution of the simulation results was utilized to reveal the propagation mechanism of single-headed spinning detonation. The track angle of soot record on the tube wall was numerically reproduced with various levels of activation energy, and the simulated unique angle was the same as that of the previous reports. The maximum pressure histories of the shock front on the tube wall showed stable pitch at Ea=10, periodical unstable pitch at Ea=20 and 27 and unstable pitch consisting of stable, periodical unstable and weak modes at Ea=35, respectively. In the weak mode, there is no Mach leg on the shock front, where the pressure level is much lower than the other modes. The shock front shapes and the pressure profiles on the tube wall clarified the mechanisms of these stable and unstable modes. In the stable pitch at Ea=10, the maximum pressure history on the tube wall remained nearly constant, and the steady single Mach leg on the shock front rotated at a constant speed. The high and low frequency pressure oscillations appeared in the periodical unstable pitch at Ea=20 and 27 of the maximum pressure history. The high frequency was one cycle of a self-induced oscillation by generation and decay in complex Mach interaction due to the variation in intensity of the transverse wave behind the shock front. Eventually, sequential high frequency oscillations formed the low frequency behavior because the frequency behavior was not always the same for each cycle. In unstable pitch at Ea=35, there are stable, periodical unstable and weak modes in one cycle of the low frequency oscillation in the maximum pressure history, and the pressure amplitude of low frequency was much larger than the others. The pressure peak appeared after weak mode, and the stable, periodical unstable and weak modes were sequentially observed with pressure decay. A series of simulations of spinning detonations clarified that the unsteady mechanism behind the shock front depending on the activation energy.

The cationic polymerization of substituted oxethanes which have pendant energetic groups such as methoxy, azido, and nitrato are investigated theoretically using the semiempirical MINDO/3, MNDO, and AM1 methods. The nucleophilicity and basicity of substituted oxethanes can be explained by the negative charge on oxygen atom of oxetanes. The reactivity of propagation in the polymerization of oxetanes can be represented by the positive charge on carbon atom and the low LUMO energy of active species of oxetanes. The reaction of the energetic cyclic oxonium ion forms to the open chain carbenium ion forms is expected by computational stability energy of the oxonium and carbenium ion (about 10~20 kcal/mole) favoring the carbenium ion. The relative equilibrium concentration of cyclic oxonium and open carbenium ions is found to be a major determinant of mechanism, owing to the rapid equilibrium of these cation forms and the expectation based on clauclation that the prepolymer propagation step SN1 mechanism will be at least as fast as that for SN2 mechanism.

The damage mechanism by the impact of steel ball on the soda-lime glass having a different surface roughness was investigated. An initiation and a propagation behavior of cracks formed by each impact velocity were quantitatively studied. A 4-point bending test was carried out to evaluate the remaining bending strength of a scratched soda-lime glass which impacted by the steel ball. As the surface roughness was increased, the shape of cracks became more irregular rather than those of the smooth specimens. The phenomenon of turning up in the wing of cone cracks occurred even at the lower velocity than the critical velocity caused the crushing. The threshold velocity of cracks initiation generally became lower than those of smooth specimen. An initiation and a propagation behavior of radial cracks had no relation with the direction of scratch on the surface. The remaning benidng strength of the scratched specimen according to impact velocity had no big difference compared with those of the smooth specimen.
