  • ZnO nanostructures were formed on a Si substrate by off-axis pulsed laser deposition(PLD) system in which a substrate plane was tilted toward a plume propagation direction. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed islands of 20∼40 nm width. From the x-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern exhibiting only (002) ZnO peak, the islands observed in AFM image were found to well crystallized. Optical bandgap enlargement from 3.26 eV to 3.35 and 3.47 eV due to the quantum size effect of ZnO nanostructures were observed by Photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature.

  • ZnO thin films were grown with different plume-substrate angles by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) to control the amount of ablated species arriving on a substrate per laser shot. The angles between plume propagation direction and substrate plane (P-S angle) were 0$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$. The growth time was changed in order to adjust film thickness. From the XRD pattern exhibiting a dominant (002) and a minor (101) XRD peak of ZnO, all films were found to be well oriented along c-axis. From the AFM image, it was found that the grain size of ZnO thin film was increased, as P-S angle decreased. UV intensity investigated by PL (Photoluminescence) increased as P-S angle decreased.

  • In this paper, we present theoretical designs for a beam steering phased array antenna that uses a true time delay optical feeder. A variable true time delay is achieved by employing one tunable laser source and high dispersion fibers with different length. The wavelength tunable optical carrier propagation in a high-dipersion fiber realizes a true time delay, with the steering direction set by a single voltage controlling the wavelength. Beamsteering of a phased array antenna is obtained by controlling the tunable laser source. An employment of a high dispersion fiber response shows wide-band operation of beem steering antenna system.

  • Initial results of processing data from an experiment performed in November, 2005 are given. A microwave Doppler radar with a knife-like beam ($1.5^0$ - $24.5^0$) was installed on a helicopter. Measurements were made during a flight above the Gorky water storage basin. Power and Doppler spectra of the radar reflected signal were analyzed. The processing has shown that the algorithm developed for the retrieval of the slopes of rough water surface enables one to determine the direction of wave propagation and retrieve the variance of the wave slopes.

  • External foces acting on a pipe bend change when a transient pressure wave propagates through the bend. Analytical expressions are derived to compute the changes of these forces when the instantaneous pressure wave passes through the bends. This analysis reveals that these forces depend mainly on static pressure rather than fluid momentum. The analysis also reveals that the change of the vertical component of the force acting on a pipe bend with an angle larger than 90$^{\circ}$ may reverse in direction during the passage of a pressure wave through the bend.

  • The mechanism of optical interaction of two nanoholes, milled in an opaque gold film, by means of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagation is investigated. The interaction depends on the polarization direction of the incident light when the nanohole pair is illuminated through uniform single antenna excitations. It is shown that by illuminating one of the nanoholes, under single antenna excitation, the other nanohole can be excited indirectly via propagated SPPs from the excited nanohole. In addition, it is found that the spectrum of electromagnetic power above the surface of the metallic film at an arbitrary point along the axis of the nanohole pair presents two resonant peaks. These peaks are due to the optical interaction between nanoholes, where the short- and long-wavelength peaks can be assigned to in-phase and antiphase interactions of magnetic dipoles relative to each nanohole, respectively. The magnetic coupled dipole approximation (MCDA) method confirms the simulation results.

  • Concrete structures generally have cracks, so for the safety and durability of structures, studies to detect cracks using nondestructive tests have been treated in great deal. In order to assure the reliability of concrete structure, microscopic fracture behavior and internal damage progress of concrete under the loading should be fully understood. The purpose of this study predicts location of initial crack and measures direction of crack propagation for on-line monitoring before the crack really grows in structures by using two-dimensional Acoustic Emission(AE) source location based on rectangular method with three-point bending test. This will allow efficient maintenance of concrete structure through monitoring of internal cracking based on AE method.

  • Integrated-optic polarization controlling devices such as polarizers, polarization splitters, and polarization converters, are proposed and demonstrated in nonlinear optic polymers. Poling-induced birefringence in electro-optic polymers is exploited to fabricate the devices. The polymeric waveguide polarizers show low excess losses, and extinction ratios of 20.7 dB and 17.1 dB for TM-pass and TE-pass polarizers, respectively. The polymeric waveguide polarization splitters exhibit TE-TM mode splittings with crosstalk of 14.2 dB and 10.1 dB for TM and TE mode splittings, respectively. The polymeric waveguide polarization converters show successful TE/TM polarization mode conversion with conversion efficiencies of higher than 30 dB. The device employs poling-induced waveguides which have slowly rotating azimuth angle of optic axis along the light propagation direction. The novel polarization converter is insensitive to wavelength and easier to fabricate than the other polarization converters containing periodic structures.

  • A simple method is proposed to split the flux vector of the Euler equations by introducing two artificial wave speeds. The direction of wave propagation can be adjusted by these two wave speeds. This idea greatly simplifies the upwinding, and leads to a new family of upwind schemes. Numerical flux function for multi-dimensional Euler equations is formulated for any grid system, structured or unstructured. A remarkable simplicity of the scheme is that it successfully achieves one-sided approximation for all waves without recourse to any matrix operation. Moreover, its accuracy is comparable with the exact Riemann solver. For 1-D Euler equations, the scheme actually surpasses the exact solver in avoiding expansion shocks without any additional entropy fix. The scheme can exactly resolve stationary contact discontinuities, and it is also freed of the carbuncle problem in multidimensional computations.
