  • One of unique characteristics of guided waves is a dispersive behavior that guided wave velocity changes with an excitation frequency and mode. In practical applications of guided wave techniques, it is very important to identify propagating modes in a time-domain waveform for determination of detect location and size. Mode identification can be done by measurement of group velocity in a time-domain waveform. Thus, it is preferred to generate a single or less dispersive mode But, in many cases, it is difficult to distinguish a mode clearly in a time-domain waveform because of superposition of multi modes and mode conversion phenomena. Time-frequency analysis is used as efficient methods to identify modes by presenting wave energy distribution in a time-frequency. In this study, experimental guided wave mode identification is carried out in a steel plate using time-frequency analysis methods such as wavelet transform. The results are compared with theoretically calculated group velocity dispersion own. The results are in good agreement with analytical predictions and show the effectiveness of using the wavelet transform method to identify and measure the amplitudes of individual guided wave modes.

  • From the dispersion relation of an electromagnetic (EM) wave propagating through plasmas, w$\^$2/ = w$\sub$p/$\^$2/+c$\^$2/k$\^$2/ the phase velocity (w/k) of the wave is large at high density where w$\sub$p/ is large, and small at low density Therefore, when a laser pulse is located on a downward density gradient of a plasma wave, the phase velocity of the back of the pulse becomes faster than that of the front of the pulse and the pulse wavelength decreases. • An analysis of the use of temperature profiles in the determination of the kinetic parameters of combustion synthesis of Ti5Si3 were investigated. From profile analysis, an apparent activation energy of 12KJ/mol was calculated. The Maximum heating rate achieved during 10wt% Ti5Si3 reaction by the product dilution method was approximately $1.5\times$104 K/s. Coupling this value with the measured wave velocity of 7.02 cm/s yields a maximum thermal gradient of 2.14$\times$103 K/cm. The value of tr (=t*) was calculated to be 1.2$\times$10-1 s and the value of td (=tx) was calculated to be 32.89 s. Using the definition of t* and the measured wave velocity, the effective thermal diffusivity, $\alpha$, was calculated to be 0.59$\times$10 $\textrm{cm}^2$/s. From these analysis, the power function, G, was also calculated.

  • This paper presents a numerical simulation of guided ultrasonic waves propagating in aluminum-epoxy-aluminum adhesive plates. In particular, this study investigated the effect of the epoxy thickness on the dispersive patterns, such as the phase velocity and group velocity of guided ultrasonic waves. In addition to investigating the dispersive curves, a numerical simulation using the pulse-echo method was carried out. This simulation showed that the degree of sensitivity of the epoxy thickness is dependent on the curvature of the phase and group dispersion curves, the maximum amplitude of the received time signals, and the peak frequency of the real components of the Fourier transform. Then, the linear relations between the epoxy thickness and the received and transformed signals were constructed to estimate the epoxy thickness.

  • The present experiment was conducted to measure the unstretched laminar burning velocity and cellular instability of DME-air and syngas (in steps of 25 %) added DME-air premixed flames using propagating spherical flame. The experimental results were discussed in two focuses which are effects of syngas fraction and initial pressure on Markstein length, unstretched laminar burning velocities, and cellular instability. The flame instability was evaluated by the Markstein length and cellularity which is caused by diffusional-thermal instability and hydrodynamic instability.

  • The moving load such as a shock wave in a pipe propagates with a specific velocity. This internal load speed determines the level of flexural wave excitation and the possibility of resonant response leading to a large deformation. In this paper, we present particular solutions of displacements and the resonance conditions when the moving load is propagating in a pipe. These analytical results are compared to numerical simulations obtained using a hydrocode. We expect to identify potential explosion hazards in the general power industries.

  • A study of the possible axisymmetric modes that propagate at low frequencies in buried, water-filled pipes is presented. It is well known that for a vacuum-pipe-vacuum system the sole non-torsional axisymmetric mode that exists at low frequencies is the fundamental L(0,1) mode. When a pipe is filled with water and still surrounded by a vacuum it is also known that another mode then appears which at low frequencies is characterized by predominantly axial water-borne displacements. In addition to these modes. this paper explores two other, less well known axisymmetric modes whose exitence depends on the acoustic properties of the outer medium that surrounds a pipe. The predicted characteristics of these modes are presented and the likelihood of them propagating over any significant distance in a buried water pipe is discussed.

  • We investigated the cryogenic temperature plasticity of a bulk amorphous alloy. Experiments showed that as temperature decreases, the plasticity of the alloy increases, such that the alloy exhibited ~20% of plastic strain when tested at $-196^{\circ}C$. This enhancement in the plasticity at cryogenic temperatures was associated with the formation of abundant shear bands distributed uniformly over the entire surface of the sample. Nonetheless, the serrations, the characteristic feature of the plastic deformation of amorphous alloys, were unclear at $-196^{\circ}C$. In this study, both the enhanced plasticity and the unclear serrations exhibited by the amorphous alloy at cryogenic temperatures were clarified by exploring shear banding behaviors in the context of the velocity and the viscosity of a propagating shear band.

  • Spectral analysis of transient elastic waves were carried out in order to identify the propagation modes in glass and unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) plates. Pencil leads were broken on the surface of plates to generate elastic waves, and two broad band transducers of 6.35 mm in diameter and 10 MHz center frequency were placed at the linear location from the source. The frequency spectra of detected signals showed that the wave propagation in the plates obeyed the Lamb wave dispersion relation. The transient signals were the fast propagating modes around maximum group velocity of the lowest and first order symmetric $modes(S_{0} and S_{1}),$ and first order antisymmetric $mode(A_{1})$. The transient signals were not severely distorted due to relatively small dispersion of those modes around the maximum group velocity. The fastest propagating mode in the plates was shown to be $S_{0}$ mode less the than cut-off frequency of $A_{1}$ mode.

  • The propagating crack problems under dynamic antiplane mode in orthotropic material is studied in this paper. To analyze the dynamic fracture problems by theoretical method or experimental method in orthotropic material, it is important to know the dynamic stress intensity factor in the vicinity of crack tip. Therefore the dynamic stress field and dynamic displacement field with dynamic stress intensity factor of orthotropic material in mode III were derived. When the crack propagation speed approachs to zero, the dynamic stress components and dynamic displacement components derived in this paper are identical to the those of static state. In addition, the relationships between dynamic stress intensity factor and dynamic energy release rate are determined by using the concept of crack closure energy with the dynamic stresses and dynamic displacements derived in this paper. Finally, the characteristics of crack propagation are studied with the properties of orthotropic material and crack speed. The variation of angle .alpha. between fiber direction and crack propagating direction and crack propagation speed fairly effect on stress component and displacement component in crack tip. The influence of crack propagation speed on the speed on the stress and displacement is greater in the case of .alpha.=90.deg. than in the case of .alpha.=0.deg. and the faster the crack propagation speed, the greater the stress value and displacement value.
