  • Korea has suffered from unemployment of workers discharged from the companies and graduates, and matriarchs since 1997's IMF. Since then Korea has fallen into economic depression, therefore the graduates have not employed for several years and lots of workers have been discharged from their positions. SOHO(Small Office Home Office) is able to be considered as the alternative employing measure of the unemployers. SOHO foundation makes a great contribution to job creation and the social welfare throughout the country. Since its foundation needs small-scale facilities and investment, the discharged and unemployed can found SOHO easily and will do good business. Korea government should practice policies in order to promote SOHO foundation as follows. First, Korean government should enlarge various support measures for SOHO foundation, namely offering of useful information and promoting of SOHO foundation, etc. Second, she should carry out the SOHO foundation education for juveniles. In order to do this project, colleges and universities adopt the SOHO foundation lesson in the education course. Third, government should enlarge various government subsidies of SOHO foundation for the benefit of the discharged and unemployed.

  • Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have been shown to suppress phytopthora blight. This suppression has been related to both microbial antagonism and induced resistance. The PGPR isolates were screened by dual culture plate method and most of the isolates were showed varying levels of antagonism. Among the PGPR isolates pyoverdin, pyochelin and salicylic acid producing strains showed the maximum inhibition of mycelial growth of Phytopkhora capsici and increased plant growth promotion in red pepper. PGPR isolates further analysed for its ability to induce production of defence related enzymes and chemicals. The activities such as Phenyle alanin ammonia Iyase (PAL), Peroxidase (PO), Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and accumulation of phenolics were observed in PGPR pretreated red pepper plants challenged with Phytopkhora capsici. The present study shows that an addition of direct antagonism and plant growth promotion, induction of defense related enzymes involved to enhance resistance against invasion of P. capsici in red pepper.

  • One hundred plants in 43 families used in Malaysian traditional medicine were screened for tumour promoting activity using two methods, the technique of activation of latent Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) in Raji cells and the irritation test on mouse ear. Extracts of only eight plants belonging to the Euphorbiaceae were found to possess EBV activation factor and to give a positive irritation test in mouse ear. These plants included Euphorbia tirucalli L., E. splendes, Jatropha podagrica, J. gossypyfolia L., Pedilanihus tithymaloides (L.) Poitt., Croton argyratus Bl., Exocoecaria agallocha L. and Codiaeum variegatum (L.) Bl. Seven of these plants are used internally in Malaysian traditional medicine. As such, they pose potential danger in the promotion of initiated cells of the mucosal tissue towards disease. Further studies are required to assess the epidemiological impact of these plants in the development of disease.

  • The relationship between innovation policies and locational competitiveness has emerged as an important area in the analysis of economic development, reflecting both the centralisation and decentralisation of globalising economic activities. The underlying spatial and institutional components are subject to a pattern of cumulative causation in which strategic interventions of policy actors exercise a decisive role in shaping competitive advantages, while promoting interactions with local and foreign partners both from the private and public sectors. The Singaporean development experience illustrated these strategic interdependencies of innovation policies and locational competitiveness. Based on her role as a manufacturing and service hub, Singapore is viewed as an infrastructural nodal point which is interconnected to global production networks. Paralleling efforts in the domain of technological innovation, Singapore's policies for locational competitiveness aim at an adaptive harmonisation of the needs of international investors with local developmental objectives. This orientation characterises also current efforts in promoting Singapore as a knowledge agglomeration with a distinct science base, expanding R&D operations and an innovation-driven pattern of economic development. In conclusion, the locational rationale of Singapore's innovation policies provides lessons for dealing with the spatial and institutional implications of technological globalisation.

  • Biomedical applications of electrospun nanofibrous meshes have been receive tremendous attentions because of their unique structures and versatilities as novel biomaterials. Incorporation of growth factors in fibrous meshes can be performed by surface-modification and encapsulation. Those growth factors stimulate differentiation and proliferation of specific types of cells and thus lead tissue regenerations of specific cell types. Topographical cues of electrospun nanofibrous meshes also increase differentiation of specific cell types according to alignments of fibrous structures. Wound healing treatments of diabetic ulcers were performed using nanofibrous meshes encapsulating multiple growth factors. Aligned nanofibrous meshes and those with random configuration were compared for differentiating mesenchymal stem cells into neuronal cells. Thus, nanofibrous meshes can be applied to novel drug delivery carriers and matrix for promoting cellular proliferation.
