  • Directional felling is a felling method practised by the Forestry Department in Peninsular Malaysia as prescribed in Field Work Manual (1997) for Selective Management Systems (SMS) in forest harvesting. Determining the direction of tree felling in Peninsular Malaysia is conducted during the pre-felling inventory 1 to 2 years before the felling operation. This study aimed to predict and analyze the direction of tree felling using the vector-based path distance back link method in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and compare it with the felling direction observed on the ground. The study area is at Balah Forest Reserve, Kelantan, Peninsular Malaysia. A Path Distance Back Link (spatial analyst) function in ArcGIS Pro 3.0 was used in predicting tree felling direction. Meanwhile, a binary classification was used to compare the felling direction estimated using GIS and the tree felling direction observed on the ground. Results revealed that 61.3% of 31 trees predicted using the vector-based projection method were similar to the felling direction observed on the ground. It is important to note that dynamic changes of natural constraints might occur in the middle of tree felling operation, such as weather problems, wind speed, and unpredicted tree falling direction.

  • The aims of this study were to investigate the feasivility of analyzing a few sorting factors such as size, coloration and defect of apples with a monochrome image processing system and to find apparent properties which could be effectively used for apple sorting. The results are summarized as follows. 1. A computer program was made to analyze the projection area, coloration and defect of an apple with a monochrome image processing system. 2. The algorithm developed to compute the projedtion area of an apple was between on the proportional relation between a given reference area and the corresponding number of pixels, and the computing time was 0.74 to 0.82 second depending on the size of apple. 3. The coloration of an apple was expressed as the ratio of the gray value of a reference color to that of a given bounded area of the stem end surface (defined as coloration index), and the computing time was about 3.0 seconds with this algorithm. 4. Defect of an apple could be isolated by lowpass filtering and image subtraction but it took about 20 seconds in computing time. 5. The coloration of the Fuji apple could be classified into 3 to 4 groups by the coloration index and also, it was found that the correlation coefficient between the indices and sugar contents was 0.74. 6. The coloration index obtained from a given bounded area of the stem end side of the Fuji apple could represent the coloration of total surface with a correlation coefficient of 0.922.

  • Recently, a study is conducting to image collection and auto detection of attribute information using mobile mapping system. The road sign attribute information detection is difficult because of various size and placement, interference of other facilities like trees. In this study, a text detection method that does not rely on a Korean character template is required to successfully detect the target text when a variety of differently sized texts are present near the target texts. To overcome this, the method of incremental right-to-left blob projection (IRBP) was suggested as a solution; the potential and improvement of the method was also assessed. To assess the performance improvement of the IRBP that was developed, the IRBP method was compared to the existing method that uses Korean templates through the 60 videos of street signs that were used. It was verified that text detection can be improved with the IRBP method.

  • In computer graphics, shadows play a very important role as a hint of inter-object distance as well as themselves in terms of realism. To represent shadows, some traditional methods such as shadow mapping and shadow volume have been frequently used for the purpose. However, the rendering results are not natural since they assume the point light. On the contrary, an area light can render soft-shadows, but its computation is too burdensome due to integral over the whole light source surface. Many alternatives have been introduced, back-projection of occluder onto the light source to get visibility of light or filtering of shadow boundary by calculating size of penumbra. But they also have problems of light bleeding or ringing effects because of low order approximation, or low performance. In this paper, we describe a method to improve those problems using shadow atlas.

  • An algebraic algorithm for predicting the joint trace distribution on the cut-face of rock slope based on the orientations and the locations of joints investigated in the borehole has been developed. Joint trace prediction is manipulated by utilizing the three dimensional plane equations of both joint planes and projection face, and the extent of trace within the projection area is calculated by considering the persistence of each joint plane. Joint trace prediction method is efficiently applied for analyzing the stability and the adequacy of support design of Gimhae Naesam cut-slope, which is structurally unstable due to slumping. Structural characteristics of rock mass is investigated by performing DOM drilling and the potential rock mass sliding inside slope face is analyzed by examining the orientations of joint planes which can induce the slope failure. Also, the efficiency of anchor support design is evaluated by considering the joint trace distribution on the anchor installation area and its sliding potential.

  • The length of study area was about 450m, and it was shown the geological condition of distinguished change of rock by cutting slope. In order to establish a slope stability, we carried out an engineering geological investigations about rock constituent, rock structure and a direction of discontinuous plane. The study area was divided into six section considered by direction of cutting slope, height of slope and geological condition. Analysis of cutting slope stability was carried out with stereo-graphic projection method by DIPS program which was feasible of stability analysis with geometrical correlation for a direction of discontinuous plane and direction of cutting slope. From analysis of cutting slope stability considered by construction, stability and economical efficiency, the slope stability countermeasures such as a high tensile wire net, slope protection method and enhanced retaining wall were established and operated which minimized effect caused by lower end of road on a relaxation of huge rock.

  • This study conducted water quality projection of year 2010 in Miho stream of the Geum river basin by using GIS. Pollutant load data of corresponding tributary of the Miho stream is estimated based on the pollutant load of TMDL zone to simulate water quality of the Miho stream for BOD, TN, and TP. The pollutant load of the urban area such as Bochung and Musim stream basin is relatively high and the wastewater treatment plant of Chunju city directly affects the entire water quality of the target area. As a result, simulation result reveals that water treatment facility needs more refined treatment process for efficient water quality management. Also, to meet the target water quality of the Miho stream water quality simulation estimates the additional dilution flow by increasing irrigation water supplied from the Daechung dam through the Musim stream.

  • The camera motion is accompanied with the translation and/or the rotation of objects in frames of a video sequence. An unnecessary rotation of objects declines the quality of the moving pictures and in addition is a primary cause of the viewers' fatigue. In this paper, a novel method for correcting rotated frames in video sequences is presented, where the modified Mojette transform is applied to the motion-compensated area in each frame. The Mojette transform is one of discrete Radon transforms, and is modified for correcting the rotated frames as follows. First, the bin values in the Mojette transform are determined by using pixels on the projection line and the interpolation of pixels adjacent to the line. Second, the bin values are calculated only at some area determined by the motion estimation between current and reference frames. Finally, only one bin at each projection is computed for reducing the amount of the calculation in the Mojette transform. Through the simulation carried out on various test video sequences, it is shown that the proposed scheme has good performance for correcting the rotation of frames in moving pictures.

  • Analysis of a bipartite (two-mode) network is a significant research area to understand the formation of social communities, economic systems, drug side effect topology, etc. in complex information systems. Most of the previous works talk about a projection-based model or latent feature model, which predicts the link based on singular similarity. The projection-based models suffer from the loss of structural information in the projected network and the latent feature is hardly present. This work proposes a novel method for link prediction in the bipartite network based on an ensemble of composite similarities, overcoming the issues of model-based and latent feature models. The proposed method analyzes the structure, neighborhood nodes as well as latent attributes between the nodes to predict the link in the network. To illustrate the proposed method, experiments are performed with five real-world data sets and compared with various state-of-art link prediction methods and it is inferred that this method outperforms with ~3% to ~9% higher using area under the precision-recall curve (AUC-PR) measure. This work holds great significance in the study of biological networks, e-commerce networks, complex web-based systems, networks of drug binding, enzyme protein, and other related networks in understanding the formation of such complex networks. Further, this study helps in link prediction and its usability for different purposes ranging from building intelligent systems to providing services in big data and web-based systems.

  • Although pediatric X-ray examinations are continuously increasing, there are not many studies on the radiation exposure to children and X-ray examination assistants according to X-ray Exposure conditions. Accordingly, we measured the radiation exposure dose of pediatric and X-ray examination assistants according to the standard guidelines and clinical average X-ray Exposure conditions when X-ray examination 10-year-old children. The effective dose and organ dose to pediatric were measured using an Dose area production meter and Monte Carlo-based PCXMC program, and the exposure dose of X-ray examination assistants was measured using an ion-chamber. When performing abdominal supine AP projection, the effective dose to children was up to 2.38 times higher under clinical average X-ray Exposure conditions than the standard guidelines. In addition, during abdominal supine AP projection, the radiation exposure dose to the X-ray examination assistants was highest on the hands at 0.0148 ~ 0.0709 mSv, and exposure dose could be reduced by up to 35% when wearing protective gloves. In conclusion, because the X-ray Exposure conditions used in clinical are unnecessarily high, unnecessary medical radiation exposure could be reduced if appropriate X-ray Exposure conditions and the radiation field area were minimized and the assistant wore shielding gloves.
