  • This paper introduces an automated tool named Advanced Stochastic Schedule Simulation System (AS4). The system automatically integrates CPM schedule data exported from Primavera Project Planner (P3) and historical activity duration data obtained from a project data warehouse, computes the best fit probability distribution functions (PDFs) of historical activity durations, assigns the PDFs identified to respective activities, computes the optimum number of simulation runs, simulates the schedule network for the optimum number of simulation runs, and estimates the best fit PDF of project completion times (PCTs). AS4 improves the reliability of simulation-based scheduling by effectively dealing with the uncertainties of the activities' durations, increases the usability of the schedule data obtained from commercial CPM software, and effectively handles the variability of the PCTs by finding the best fit PDF of PCTs. It is designed as an easy-to-use computer tool programmed in MATLAB. AS4 encourages the use of simulation-based scheduling because it is simple to use, it simplifies the tedious and burdensome process involved in finding the PDFs of the many activities' durations and in assigning the PDFs to the many activities of a new network under modeling, and it does away with the normality assumptions used by most simulation-based scheduling systems in modeling PCTs.

  • High speed railroad project management has been almost completed by starting operation of Seoul-Busan high speed railroad with the exception of a few constructing blocks currently in April, 2004. After Korea Rail Network Authority was established in 2004, it needs to develop new project management system for both conventional railroad construction and high speed railroad construction for domestic railroad projects, while it plans to invest in overseas railroad project for logistics innovation and improvement in passenger transport services on a large scale. Therefore this paper provides the method that we can adapt the project management system for high speed railroad containing experiences and know-how from construction of high speed railroad for both conventional railroad construction and high speed railroad construction or improve project management system for high speed railroad to use it as project management system for overseas railroad projects.

  • Network optimization is being increasingly important and fundamental issue in the fields such as engineering, computer science, operations research, transportation, telecommunication, decision support systems, manufacturing, and airline scheduling. Networks provide a useful way to modeling real world problems and are extensively used in practice. Many real world applications impose on more complex issues, such as, complex structure, complex constraints, and multiple objects to be handled simultaneously and make the problem intractable to the traditional approaches. Recent advances in evolutionary computation have made it possible to solve such practical network optimization problems. The invited talk introduces a thorough treatment of evolutionary approaches, i.e., hybrid genetic algorithms approach to network optimization problems, such as, fixed charge transportation problem, minimum cost and maximum flow problem, minimum spanning tree problem, multiple project scheduling problems, scheduling problem in FMS.

  • There has been increased interest in wireless sensors in the last few years. This paper provides insight into the properties that make these sensors so attractive, specifically considering their efficiency, data reliability, and the ability to verify the data generated. Some advantages a wireless network presents over traditional information sensing are discussed as well. The paper considers how the environmental field can benefit from using these networks. Some of the possible challenges this industry will face in adopting this new method of data sampling and collection are also considered. A project we conducted raised concern over measures needed for the integrity of the communication system to be maintained, thus ensuring the integrity of the data being collected. From results of an experimental project conducted in York University, the reliability and usefulness of a sensor network is discussed.

  • Wind farm development project contains high business risks because that a wind farm, which is to be operating for 20 years, has to be designed and assessed only relying on a year or little more in-situ wind data. Accordingly, long-term correction of short-term measurement data is one of most important process in wind resource assessment for project feasibility investigation. This paper shows comparison of general Measure-Correlate-Prediction models and neural network, and presents new method using neural network for increasing prediction accuracy by accommodating multiple reference data. The proposed method would be interim step to complete long-term correction methodology for Korea, complicated Monsoon country where seasonal and diurnal variation of local meteorology is very wide.

  • Restoration to improve the ecological quality of Mt. Nam was explored in a viewpoint of restoration in both landscape and ecosystem levels. A restoration plan in landscape level was based on the result on the land-use pattern in Mt. Nam including its surrounding area and that in ecosystem level on the ecological quality of each landscape element. A plant to construct the green network, which extending from Mt. Nam to the Han river through the Yongsan family park and through the Eungbong urban park was prepared as a restoration project in landscape level to improve the ecological quality of Mt. Nam as an ecological park. On the other hand, a plan for restoration and creation of biotop as a restoration project in ecosystem level was also prepared to improve the ecological quality of each green area consisting green network. Green areas composing green network include keystone green area (Mt. Nam), green stations (Yongsan family park, Eungbong urban park, and the han river citizen's park), and green pathway (or ecological corridor) connecting those green areas.

  • This paper presents an innovative way of integrating scheduling and project controls with the environmental impact of a construction project to track, monitor, and manage environmental emissions at the activity level. As a starting point, scheduling and project controls help monitor the status of a project to provide an assessment of the duration and sequence of activities. Additionally, project schedules can also reflect resource allocation and costs associated with various phases of a construction project. Owners, contractors and construction managers closely monitor tasks or activities on the critical path(s) and/or longest path(s) calculated through network based scheduling techniques. However, existing industry practices do not take into account environmental impact associated with each activity during the life cycle of a project. Although the environmental impact of a project may be tracked in various ways, that tracking is not tied to the project schedule and, as such, generally is not updated when schedules are revised. In this research, a Cradle to Gate approach is used to estimate environmental emissions associated with each activity of a sample project schedule. The research group has also investigated the potential determination of scenarios of lowest environmental emissions, just as project managers currently determine scenarios with lowest cost or time. This methodology can be scaled up for future work to develop a library of unit emissions associated with commonly used construction materials and equipment. This will be helpful for project owners, contractors, and construction managers to monitor, manage, and reduce the carbon footprint associated with various projects.

  • The Smart Network Project is planned for achieving the Internet advanced country by adjusting the Government Future Internet Development as a national agenda. The future Internet is defined as diverse alternative technology and services that can provide optimal services for individual characteristic and situation in anywhere, anytime throughout convergence of communication, broadcasting, and computing to solve the current limitation of the Internet. This paper is to analyze the economic effects of the smart network build-up. For the economic effect analysis, we reclassified the smart network industry classification system and re-drew up 2011 Inter-industry Relations Table by using the Inter-industry Relations Table issued by the Bank of Korea and the RAS techniques. And we analyzed the economic effects that can be drawn from the investment of the smart network industry. As a result, the gross production inductive effect which appears with the economic effect of the smart network establishment project from 2011 to 2015 came out to be about 72 trillion 808.2 billion KW, added value inductive effect of 44 trillion 192.9 billion KW and the employment inductive effect of the job creation of about 412 thousands people. Afterward, it is anticipated that the smart network build-up project to contribute to the improvement of Koreans' daily life. Moreover, this research will be used as a valued basic material in the pursuit of the future network projects.
