Development of Materials for Programming Education based on Computational Thinking for Club Activities of Elementary School (Computational Thinking 기반의 초등학교 동아리 활동용 프로그래밍 교육 교재의 개발)

  • The software education to elementary students will be conducted from 2019. One of highlights of software education is a programming experience. It requires a higher level of programming education to students that are interested in programming. This problem can be solved by the club activities. But the materials for programming education for elementary students is not much. Therefore, we developed a programming material for club activities of the elementary school. We did not develop it as a programming manual. The students can understand a problem, can design through decomposition and abstraction processes, and can write a program when they are learning with this material. As a result, we expect that they can enhance their computational thinking abilities. We proved that our material is suitable for elementary students through a demonstration class. Therefore, we expect that our development methodologies for the material for programming education will contribute to develop a material for programming education.

The Effects of Learning App Inventor Programming Education Plan for Gifted Elementary Students (초등정보영재 대상의 앱 인벤터 프로그래밍 교육의 효과)

  • Recently, the emphasis on education of informatics gifted elementary students is to make creative leader in knowledge-based society. It need the high mental faculties and problem solving ability to solve many problem situations for students. In this paper, we developed App Inventor programming education plan. We taught this plan to gifted elementary students and observed the effects of their problem solving ability, self-efficacy and achievement of programing process. In order to achieve the research goals, we designed the appropriate App Inventor programming plan for gifted elementary students and we changed the Learning Model of Renzulli's three step for gifted students to achieve this research goals. Designed learning program was utilized by twenty informatics gifted elementary students for 15 times during five weeks period. In conclusion, we confirmed that App Inventor programming education for gifted elementary students affected the problem solving ability, self-efficacy and achievement of programing process positively.

  • The revised 7th education course of information implies that students use variety of information devices to solve the common problems and it also includes the programming education for improving problem-solving abilities. Not only improving problem-solving abilities but also developing thinking skill is expected in programming education. However, traditional programming education is teacher-oriented and focused on language syntax. Accordingly, students have heavy cognitive load and it decrease students' interest of programming. Therefore, in this paper, a instructional method of programming using educational robot is proposed to improve interest of elementary students in concretive operation stage for effectiveness of programming education. Additionally, results of experiments show that proposed robot programming instructional method can be applied in elementary education.

  • Programming training in informatics education have the means that algorithm design and problem solving. However, Because learning and using programming tools that should be done first, elementary school students learning the programming tools that are interested in the process has been reduced. But programming with using an Educational Programming Language(EPL) can show results directly and coding with a drag & drop method that keeps the elementary students' interests for programming. Now that, the students are possible to enhance their creativity and reasoning skills. Therefore, through the result of this study show how to apply the EPL in the elementary information classes and comparing with before this study and after the study, we analyzed to applicate prosperity of EPL.

Analysis of Effect that Pair Programming Develope of Computational Thinking and Creativity in Elementary Software Education (초등학교 SW교육에서 동료 프로그래밍 교육 방법이 컴퓨팅 사고력과 창의성 신장에 미치는 효과 분석)

  • In this study, It analyzed the effect of pair programming teaching methods in elementary software education. At first, for the development of SW educational programs it surveyed 162 elementary students and 34 teachers in J area. As a result, developed SW educational programs based on geometry in elementary mathematics and it was applied. For application SW programs it was constructed 22 students experimental group, 22 students comparison group of 44 students in 3, 4, 5th grade the winter break of ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ university education donation application. First, software education using pair programming will be more effective on the development of elementary school students' computational thinking. Second, software education using pair programming will be more effective on the development of elementary school students' creativity. Test results, pair programming is to show a significant difference on the development of computational thinking and creativity in elementary software education.

  • This study investigates the effectiveness of computer programming with KODU on problem-solving abilities of elementary school students. Diverse tools were developed for novice programmers to become more easy and comfort in learning a computer programming. Among them, KODU has focused on facilitating the programming of various multimedia applications to create games, animations and music videos etc. It is expected that KODU will help elementary school students to improve their problem-solving abilities through creating their own games, animation, and music etc. In this paper, we developed the educational program using KODU for teaching the elementary school students. The developed programming course was offered at the 5th grade students of a elementary school in Seoul and a total of 27 elementary school students were participated in our programming courses. Most of the students stated that the course was interesting, and their problem-solving ablilities were improved after the course from March 2014 through May 2014.

A Study on Software Education Donation Model for the Social Care Class

  • In this paper, we propose an effective software education donation model for the social care class. The types of software education for elementary, middle, and high school for the social care class are in the order of after school classes, club activities, creative experiences, and regular classes. In elementary school students, it is effective to precede visual programming education based on block coding and to conduct curriculum convergence with SW and HW at the beginning, and high school students are carrying out text programming education like Python. Software education for social care class The contribution activity model can be classified into five types such as geographically difficult area, multicultural family areas, orphanage, reformatory, and basic livelihood security recipient. In addition, the survey results show that the students' interest in software education and their satisfaction are all very high at 96%. Effective software education for the social care class In the donation model, the lecturers consist of responsible professors, lecturers, and assistant instructors. Software training for the social care class is effective on a year-by-year basis, so that students can feel authenticity and trust. Software education contents focus on visual programming and physical computing education in elementary or middle school, and text programming and physical computing education in high school. It is necessary to construct a software education donor matching system that helps efficient management of software education donations by efficiently matching schools (consumers: elementary, middle, high school) and software education donors(suppliers).

The Effects of Elementary Students' Perception of the Game Programming Using KODU (KODU 기반의 게임 프로그래밍에 대한 초등학생들의 인식 변화)

  • In this study, we develop a teaching and learning model for elementary students on game programming using KODU. The developed model consists of four steps: introducing the game programming, making the game, playing the game, and modifying the game. After teaching the students, we conduct a survey to gather their opinions on the game making tool and activities. The results show that the students are satisfied with KODU and prefer make a game to play a game. Game programming educating with KODU can keep elementary students from game addiction while increasing confidence in their studies.

  • The Code Block Based Educational Programming Language(EPL) is the mainstream tool for software education for elementary students. However, Code Block Based EPL has limitations in scalability, even though there are many advantages as an introductory tool for software education. In this study, we searched the approach of SW education using Python, which is a text-based programming language actively used in real industrial field. We developed a learning program and model using Python and applied it to the sixth grade elementary school students for 10 hours. As a result, we found that the robot-based Python learning model had a significant effect on improving students' thinking skills and confirmed the applicability of text-based programming language to elementary school students.

  • This study shows how to impact on programming learning using Scratch by the learning style. Firstly, students were classified by learning styles test using the VARK questionnaire. After one semester of programming education, correlation with learning styles and various instructional factors was analyzed. Scratch-based programming education improves the cognitive effectiveness and learning satisfaction for elementary school students. Especially students with visual preference performed better on programming education based on Scratch statistically. As a result, the process of programming must be mainly considered in programming education.
