This study attempted to analyze with a focus on the relationship between managerial competence and income smoothing. Therefore, this study attempted to analyze and focus on the relationship between managerial competency and profit softening using a measure of managerial competency presented in Demerjian et al. (2012). The results of the analysis are as follows. It was confirmed that there was a significant positive relationship between manager ability and income smoothing at the 1% level. When managers make income, it can be interpreted that managers with superior ability can make profits better by accurately predicting the future. It is the same result as the expectation of this study that managers with excellent ability have high incentives to soften profits by reducing profit volatility through more accurate forecasting. Therefore, this study empirically analyzed that managers with excellent abilities are more effective in implementing income smoothing strategies.

  • Park Tae-Joon, a pioneer in the Korean steel industry, has greatly influenced the advancement of science and technology as well as the development of the nation's economy. He believed that POSCO, which was a government-owned company, should not only focus on making profits, but also operate for higher state-level purposes. This belief became the basis for founding a general laboratory and a research university, as well as building big science and technology R&D facilities. Park Tae-Joon's efforts to establish a research university and his dedication to the advancement of science education stemmed from his devotion to public welfare. Just like he believed that the steel industry, which is the basis for all other industries, should be promoted at the state-level, he believed that university and basic science should also be promoted at the state-level. Thanks to his philosophy, the Pohang University of Science and Technology has risen beyond just a polytechnic school to become a research university that makes revolutionary science and technology advancements for the nation. The fact that Park Tae-Joon used profits from business to build the university and national research facilities such as the Pohang Light Source also shows that he nurtured pure science with the welfare of the whole nation in mind.

According to the calculation of interests, the total cost of this fishery comes to ₩38,010,653 and in this account, the production cost comes to ₩35,477,198(93.3%), the material cost, 14,567,239(38.3%), the labour cost, 12,740,274(33.5%), the expenses, ₩8,169,685(21.5%), the commision and administration expenses, 2,533,455(6.7%). The expenses for this fishery are paid out as production costs, and the expenses for sale and administration expenses are the lowest of them, and the 93% of expenses are paid out as production costs. The ratio of cost element to 100% is as follow. The wages, 28.4%, fuel, 15.2%, repair, 11.6%, deprecation, 9.5%, fishing gear, 8.7%, ice, 6.1%, container(box for fish), 5.2% administration expenses, 5.2%, food, 3.5%, ship grar, 3.2%, public welfare, 1.7%, commision for sale, 1.5%, insurance for crew, 0.2%, taxes, 0.2%. This fishery is managed with the larger fishing boat than it was and so, it demands better crews with higher wages. In the former fishery, the search for fishing ground is very difficult with long navigation and great fuel consumption. when the weak fishing gears are used, the expenses for their repair and for their gears are greatly paid out. The unit costs of catches to each box come to ₩2.807(₩187 each kg). As the ratio of cost of sales comes to 86.7%and the ratio of interests comes to ₩5,850,812(13.3%), and so the net profit comes to 13.3% of total profits. According to above the ratio of cost of sales is shown as a universal validity, Asthe total expenses comes to 86.7% to the money on sales in the break-even point, the break-even point comes to ₩26,209,168 Accordingly for the profit control the account of production should be raised, and by the saving method of expenditure the break-even point should be brought down for the development of total profits.

  • This study aims to find out the effectiveness of regulation of promotional gifts and exemption of charges by analyzing the judgement criterion of illegality and the corrective action taken by regulatory agencies and suggests effective way of regulation. The results show that recently the differences of price-cut is getting bigger. In addition, Fair Trade Commission has considered discounts as unfair predatory price only if price is below the cost. But in the telecommunication business law enacted by Korea Communications Commission, 'expected profits per subscriber' has been applied as a key criterion. KCC's criterion is based not on the expected profit of individual service provider but on the averaged profit of services providers. It doesn't consider differences of service quality and the cost structure between dominant firm and late comers. Prohibition act of user discrimination result in the increase of subscriber and operating profits of late comers but this is not direct purpose of regulation. It can be desirable in the aspect of fair competition but since it may reduce consumer welfare, the criterion needs to be reconsidered.
