The purpose of this study is to analyze the internal factors that influence the performance of local government hospitals in Korea. There are 34 hospitals in korea as of 2008. Among these hospitals 5 are profit-making and the other loss-making in terms of profitability. Data was collected by Institute of local government hospital union. The major findings of this study was as follows : Firstly, 7 hospitals are high level, over than 100% of fixed ratio. But that result was better than the other study 5 years ago. Secondly, 29 hospitals are bellow 85% of bed occupancy rate. There are a number of hospitals didn't use the facilities and the personnel cost in total costs are high. And lastly, as a result of multiple regression analysis, the factors had on significant effect on normal profit to total assets are personnel cost(-), liability to total assets(-), average length of stay(-), outpatient visits to inpatient days(-). In conclusion, to improve the profitability of hospitals, the efforts to reduce personnel cost and to increase bed occupancy rate.
This study was undertaken to examine the profit efficiency and its determining factors, the investment opportunity, and the challenges of shea butter producers in the northern region of Ghana. The methods employed in this research were the Stochastic Profit Frontier (SPF) model, gain-cost and investment return analyses, as well as Kendall's W statistic using primary data collected from 120 purposively-selected respondents. Results from the analysis indicated that profit efficiency was positively influenced by sex, household size, marital status, educational level, transportation cost, store rent, and price of shea nut with a gain in profit efficiency of 58.5%. The investment analysis demonstrated a net gain per person of $8,077 equivalent to GH₵ 28,270 Ghanaian cedi (GH₵) using 2016 exchange rate (GH₵ 3.5 = $1). Among the challenges identified, the poor quality of shea nuts was the most prioritised challenge with 72.8% agreement among the respondents. Based on these findings, it was recommended that proper training and education, as well as improvement in shea nut quality, should be promoted to improve the profit efficiency of shea butter producers.
The purpose of this study was to analyze a trend of profitability classified by characteristics of hospitals and to analyze related factors. The data for this study were derived from survey material conducted by the Korean Hospital Association on 33 hospitals in Korea between 1993 and 2002. Profitability was measured in the aspect of investment profit rate and operation profit rate with net profit to total assets, normal profit to total assets and operating margin to gross revenue as dependent variables. Independent variables were classified by general factors (ownership, number of beds, period of establishment, region), financial factors (total asset turnover, liabilities to total assets, current ratio, fixed ratio, inventories turnover, personnel costs per operation profit, material costs per operation profits), composition of manpower and facilities(personnel and area per beds), productivity index(the number of daily patients per medical doctor, the number of daily patients per nurse), the score of quality assurance activities. First, Concerning the specialists per beds or area per beds and profitability of hospitals there was not statistically significant. Second, Those hospitals having the most daily patients per nurse had significantly higher profitability than the others, but the number of daily patients per medical doctor had little effect on the profitability. Thirds, Those hospitals having a higher proportion total asset turnover tended to show significantly higher profitability compared to other hospitals, but the liabilities to total assets and liquidity ratio had a little difference to the profitability. Those hospitals having a higher proportion personnel costs per operation profit and material costs per operation profits tended to show significantly lower hospital profitability compared to other hospitals. Fourth, In regression analysis, hospital profitability had negative relationship with personnel costs per operation profit or material costs per operation profits. While it had positive relationship with total asset turnover, the number of daily patients per nurse. In conclusion, private hospitals had higher profitability than that of public hospitals. Though factors related to profitability of hospital were different according to ownership, it is important for securing appropriate profitability by operating appropriate number of nurse, raising total asset turnover, and reducing personnel costs, material costs per operation profits. This study can be used as a baseline data for planning of hospital management. But the study may be limited in that the results cannot be generalized due to its small sample size. However, this longitudinal observation of 33 hospitals over ten year period has significant merit alone.
This study was designed to find out the factors which influence on the financial performance of the hospital. Out of 32 provincial hospitals which were established by the government, 10 hospitals were selected as sample hospitals. Ten hospitals were divided into two groups(5 hospitals each), one of which was profit-making and the other loss-making. The criteria in selecting profit or loss-making hospitals was net profit to total revenue. The major finding of the study was as follows; 1. Whether or not a hospital had specialized in certain departments was proved to be the major factor influencing on the financial performance. Three out of five profit-making hospitals could harvest following results by operating specific departments. (1) Man powers needed for the operation of specific departments were 14.6 persons per 100 bed, which was only 1/7 of the general hospital. (2) The number of doctors has not increased in proportion to the increase of the number of beds. (3) Ratio of total revenue to MD.'s payroll expenses of the profit-making hospitals was 75.0% higher than the loss-making hospitals. (4) The average length of stay of specific department was very long(388.1 days). However, the specific departments were found to have contributed much to the financial performance because the occupancy rate of such departments was very high(94.5%). 2. The headcount per 100 bed of the profit-making hospitals was 23.9 persons(24.0%) less than the loss-making hospitals and the ratio of payroll expenses to total revenue 15.1% less. 3. Averagel revenue per specialist of the profit-making hospitals was 100 million(25.1%) more than loss-making hospitals and the ratio of total revenue to MD's payroll expenses of profit-making hospital was 75.0% higher. 4. Profit-making hospitals have introduced new systems or renovation in 36 fields, such as incentive payment system, utilization of contracted man powers, change of the payroll structure of the nurses, specialization in certain departments, etc; however, loss-making hospitals introduced only 25 new systems or renovations. These kind of renovation could not be achieved without the cooperation of the labor union and the strong will of the top management. Therefore, it could be said that the labor union of the profit-making hospitals seems to have been very cooperative compared with that of loss-making hospitals.
The main purpose of this article is for deriving functions related to the prediction of the closure of the hospitals, and finding out how the discriminant functions affect the closure of the hospitals. Empirical data were collected from 3 years financial statements of 41 private hospitals closed down from 2000 till 2006 and 62 private hospitals in business till now. As a result, the functions related to the prediction of the closure of the private hospital are 4 indices: Return on Assets, Operating Margin, Normal Profit Total Assets, Interest expenses to Total borrowings and bonds payable. From these discriminant functions predicting the closure, I found that the profitability indices - Return on Assets, Operating Margin, Normal Profit Total Assets - are the significant affecting factors. The discriminant functions predicting the closure of the group of the hospitals, 3 years before the closure were Normal Profit to Gross Revenues, Total borrowings and bonds payable to total assets, Total Assets Turnover, Total borrowings and bonds payable to Revenues, Interest expenses to Total borrowings and bonds payable and among them Normal Profit to Gross Revenues, Total borrowings and bonds payable to total assets, Total Assets Turnover, Total borrowings and bonds payable to Revenues are the significant affecting factors. However 2 years before the closure, the discriminant functions predicting the closure of the hospital were Interest expenses to Total borrowings and bonds payable and it was the significant affecting factor. And, one year before the closure, the discriminant functions predicting the closure were Total Assets Turnover, Fixed Assets Turnover, Growth Rate of Total Assets, Growth Rate of Revenues, Interest expenses to Revenues, Interest expenses to Total borrowings and bonds payable. Among them, Total Assets Turnover, Growth Rate of Revenues, Interest expenses to Revenues were the significant affecting factors.
Cost-volume-profit analysis shows the relationship between these factors. The figures expressed in a break-even chart can be used planning control and decision making. The relation ships can also be helpful in understanding how all costs must be covered in menu pricing. Involved in these relationship is the contribution to overhead and profit, or contribution ratio. This study used the food service operation of H hotel. Assumed the FC would be 10% of the High Volume, the VC would be 76% of the high volume. And in the CVP of individual meals, selected labor cost of the VC, assumed labor cost would be 35% of the volume.
This study focuses on the factors that make the financing decision of private hospitals in Korea. Data used in this study were collected from 98 hospitals with complete general data of current status as well as financial statements. They were chosen from the 138 hospitals that passed the accreditation process by the Korean Hospital Association from 1996 to 2000 for the purpose of accrediting training hospitals. The dependent variables in this study consist of total liabilities to total assets, borrowings to total assets. The independent variables are ownership, hospital type, teaching status, location, bed size, period of establishment, asset structure, profitability, growth, tax shields, volatility of profit, competition(market concentration), and other factors. The major findings of this study are as follows. The factors found to have significant effect on liabilities to total assets are teaching status(-), asset structure(-), profitability(-), tax shields(+), and business risk(-). University hospitals have less liabilities than the non-university hospitals. It was also confirmed that high profitability, high fixed asset, high volatility of profit and low tax shields results in decrease in liabilities. The factors that significantly affect on borrowings to total assets are teaching status(-), period of establishment(-), volatility of profit(-) and competition(+).
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to analyze factors affecting the performance of public hospitals in South Korea. Methods : We collected management performance data from 2013 to 2015 from income statements, balance sheets, and annual reports from 32 local public hospitals. The dependent variable used was profitability, which included operating margin, return on assets and net profit to gross revenues. The independent variables were general characteristics, liquidity, stability, and activity. Results : Patient revenues, total assets, and total capital had increased steadily but patient expenses had increased to a greater extent. Operating profit, and net profit were consistently in deficits and the management status of local public hospitals had recently been in difficulty. The debt ratio, quick ratio, ratio of fixed liability and fixed assets turnover rate have a significant positive(+) effect on performance in the years 2013-2015. Conclusions : We suggest management strategies for these hospitals based on the results analyzed.
During the last several decades, Korea has been regarded as one of the fastest growing economies in the world. However, the small size of national land has not met the vigorous demand for land necessary to develop economic infra-structures such as large-scale harbors airports and highways. In order to satisfy the growing demand for land, the Korean government and industry have implemented the national land development programs to reclaim land from the sea fur the several decades. It is certain that these land development programs have resulted in a lot of property disputes between fishermen and public project administrators. This paper is to develop a quantitative model to estimate compensation for damages or restriction of charted fisheries resulting from large-scale public projects. In this paper, the compensation model is derived by using cost-volume-profit analysis framework because the compensation for charted fisheries basically depends on the factors such as the costs, production volume, profit of charted fisheries damaged or restricted by public projects. The model shows that the compensation for damages or restriction of charted fisheries is determined by the average annual profit, damage duration period, and the degree of fishery damages. In addition, the degree of fishery damages measured by the ratio of lost profit to annual average profit turns out to be determined by the following factors: annul profit, unit variable cost, decrease in production volume, the rate of increase in variable cost, and a change in fixed cost. Furthermore, this parer discusses the nam issues related to practices and regulation of the compensation for fishery damages in the current Fishery Act of Korea and suggests some appraisal methods which will be able to lead to theoretically correct and fair compensation for fisheries damages resulting from large-scale public projects.
The objective of this study is to analyze the causal relationship among Non-profit Criteria of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award(MBNQA) and to compare the casuality among company, hospital and non-profit organization field. The survey instrument consists of 94 questions from the seven categories of the MBNQA. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is used to analyze the empirical data and estimates the path coefficients among the MBNQA categories. The result of our research is as follows, First, the Leadership effects on as a driver of all factors. Secondly, the positive effect of the Foundation on the Direction and the System categories, Finally, the positive influence of the Direction on the System categories of the MBNQA model. In this study, most hypothesis are statistically significant.
