  • In this paper the economic value of weather forecasts is valuated for profit-oriented enterprise decision-making situations. Value is estimated in terms of monetary profits (or benefits) resulted from the forecast user's decision under the specific payoff structure, which is represented by a profit/loss ratio model combined with a decision function and a value score (VS). The forecast user determines a business-related decision based on the probabilistic forecast, the user's subjective reliability of the forecasts, and the payoff structure specific to the user's business environment. The VS curve for a meteorological forecast is specified by a function of the various profit/loss ratios, providing the scaled economic value relative to the value of a perfect forecast. The proposed valuation method based on the profit/loss ratio model and the VS is adapted for hypothetical sets of forecasts and verified for site-specific probability of precipitation forecast of 12 hour and 24 hour-lead time, which is generated from Korea meteorological administration (KMA). The application results show that forecast information with shorter lead time can provide the decision-makers with great benefits and there are ranges of profit/loss ratios in which high subjective reliability of the given forecast is preferred.

  • It has been reported that there is a significant positive relationship between the unexpected earnings on the earnings announcement date and the cumulative abnormal returns following the earnings announcement date. This study investigates whether the results of prior studies are because the public announcement of shareholders' meeting date was selected as the event date instead of either the preliminary earnings disclosure date or the profit/loss change announcement date. The results of this study are as follows. First, post-earnings-announcement drift(PEAD) occurs when unexpected earnings were computed based on the prior period earnings and the public announcement of the shareholders' meeting date as the profit disclosure date. Second, when analyzing the PEAD with the unexpected earnings calculated using the financial analysts' forecasts, no PEAD has been found both on the date of the shareholders' meeting and the earlier date of the preliminary earnings disclosure, profit/loss change announcement, or the public announcement of the shareholders' meeting. Foster et al. (1984) analyze the PEAD using time series model and earnings forecasting model and suggest that the PEAD appears only in the time series model. In this study, too, in the case of using analysts' profit forecasts, the lack of the PEAD shows that the PEAD can be changed according to the method of measuring the unexpected earnings.

  • Generally, the size of our recreation sites is selected through use demand at the peak day. At same time, scale economic and diseconomic are applied to a recreation site. If you are a rational decision-maker, you would like to select the size of your park at profit-maximization point. This study is the first try for modelling a Gain-Loss by the size options of a theme park. For testing the validity of a financial model to select the size of theme parks. Ever-Land, Seoul-Land, Dream-Land's operating size was analyzed. By the size options, the revenue of each park was compared with cost. The profit-maximization point and break-even point of each park were found. Ever-Land and Dream-Land's size was selected between the profit-maximization point and the break-even point. In contrast with Ever-Land and Dream-Land's, Seoul-Land's was selected upper the break-even point. To increase the utility of this model in selecting the size of a theme park, a decision-maker must keep in mind a few limits of this study. That is, 1) this model can not be applied at public parks. 2) Sometimes the others can be more important than financial revenue and cost. Finally, there is the validity of Gain-Loss Model in estimating only the financial revenues and costs through the size options.

  • A semiconductor market is one of the most competitive markets in the world. To survive this competition, important targets for production planning are on-time delivery and profit maximization. In our research, we modify the linear programming model for the current production planning by adding new objective functions that maximize the profit. In addition, we propose a production planning process that gives a priority to new products, reflecting daily fluctuations in demand to weekly production planning. We validate our model with real data sets obtained from a major company semiconductor manufacturer and performed the paired t-test to verify the results. The results showed that our model forecasted profit and loss with 93.2% accuracy and improved the due date satisfaction by 10%.

  • To help improve the current government practice of direct damage-compensation policies, resulting from the loss of profit, sustained by Hanwoo farmers, as a result of the recent Korea-U. S. Free Trade Agreement (FTA), this research aims to examine any problems or issues caused by said policies. To accomplish this task, we have established Hanwoo-SIMO model and estimated the damage of Hanwoo farmers, one without the implementation of the FTA and another with the FTA, to compare and contrast the two. We then analyzed the efficacy of the current government policies. According to our analysis, the current direct compensation policies for the loss of profit on the part of Hanwoo farmers are insufficient. To address this problem, we recommend the government enact a new direct damagecompensation law to address the following issues. First, as the base formula of damage-compensation, the government should use current price of the beef rather than the annually changing flexible price. Second, the flexible control index should remain fixed at 1.0 rate while the government prepares the adequate amount of the damage compensating direct payment resulting from the FTA. Third, the direct government compensation policy should extend beyond the current 15 years (2013-2026) as the profit loss is expected to increase after the midpoint of the FTA.

  • The purpose of this study is to contribute reference material that provides insight into innovative process management that increases R&D output in commercializing new products. A model of a process from research to commercialization with the cumulative profit and loss curve is put forward and hypotheses related to success and failure are developed at the stages up to product launch. Seventeen large projects that have resulted in successful product launches have been examined from the initial research stage to commercialization. Prefect duration, standardized cumulative R&D expenditures and research resource concentration are analyzed in terms of statistical method and patterns in cumulative profit and loss curves after product sales, as well as the reasons for and other aspects of success/failure are investigated and analyzed. Consequently, valuable information on future management tasks has been obtained such as: (1) project duration differs depending on market sectors, product types and presence/absence of materials research (2) cumulative profit and loss curves can be categorized into four patterns (3) reasons for failure can be divided into technological and market problem categories and (4) these factors have an impact on product sales.

  • The size of leisure space has been determined on the basis of the annual and peak day's number of visitor, turnover rate, and size per visitor. But the past models have no theoretical base and practical errors on the many cases. So, this study was carried out to build and test a new theoretical model for selecting a optimal size of theme park. The basic concept of the model building is the break-even point analysis of cost-volume-profit relation. That is, Gain-Loss of theme park is determined by marginal profit and fixed cost by size. YongIn Farmland was selected as a model test case.

  • Purpose - This paper aims to investigate a profit maximizing incentive of foreign traders in distributing the KOSPI 200 Futures. Such an incentive may induce unsophisticated retail traders to suffer loss from speculative trading. Since Korean government increased the entry barriers of the market to protect unsophisticated traders, the market size has been decreasing while the proportion of the contract held by foreign traders has been increasing. These on going changes make the market imperfectly competitive, where a profit maximization incentives of foreign traders are expected to grow. In this paper, we attempt to find any evidence of such behavior, thereby providing implications regarding market policy and market efficiency. Research design, data, and methodology - According to Kyle(1985), an informed trader exploits his/her monopoly power optimally in a dynamic context so that he/she makes positive profit, where he/she could conceal his/her trading utilizing noise trading as camouflage. We apply the KOSPI 200 Futures market to the Kyle's model: foreign traders who take into account the effect of his/her trading to maximize expected profits as an informed trader, retail investors as noise traders, and financial institutions as market makers. To find any evidence of monopolistic behavior, we test the variants of trading volume and price data of the KOSPI 200 Futures over the period of 2009 and 2017. Results - First, we find that the price of the KOSPI 200 Futures are more volatile than the price of underlying asset. Second, we find that monopolistic foreign trader's trading order flows are consistent with exploiting his/her monopoly power to maximize profit. Finally, we find that retail investors' trading order flows are inversely consistent with maximizing profit, that is, uninformed retail investors suffer loss continuously in speculative trading against informed traders. Conclusions - Our results show that the quantity of strategic order flows may have a large effect on the price, therefore, resulting the market inefficiency. The results also imply that, in implementing regulations, the depth of the market must be considered to maintain market liquidity, and suggesting interesting research topics regarding the market structure.

  • In this study, we introduce a model that satisfies energy efficiency and economical efficiency by introducing and demonstrating cogeneration generators in industrial complexes using various actual data collected at the site. The proposed model is composed of three scenarios, ie, full - time operation, scenario operated according to demand, and a fusion type. In this study, the power generation profit and surplus thermal energy are measured according to the operation of the generator, and the thermal energy is traded according to the demand of the customer to calculate the profit and loss including the heat and evaluate the economic efficiency. As a result of the study, it is relatively profitable to reduce the generation of the generator under the condition that the electricity rate is low and the gas rate is high, while the basic charge is not increased. On the contrary, if the electricity rate is high and the gas rate is low, The more you start up, the more profit you can see. These results show that even a cogeneration power plant with a low economic efficiency due to a low "spark spread" has sufficient economic value if it can sell more than a certain amount of heat energy from a nearby customer and adjust the applied power through peak management.
