  • Processing methods of heat treatment in milk has been developed to increase safety for the consumer by destroying pathogens that may be found in milk. Commercial pasteurization of milk in the market started in the late 1800s in Europe and in the early 1900s in the United States. In 1962, it became a requirement in Korea that all milk for sale should be treated by heat. Nowadays, heat treatment (pasteurization or sterilization) became mandatory for all milk products sold in all over the world. However, since 1987, there was a big debate about the heat-treatment of milk. Korea Society of Dairy Science and Technology (KSDST) complied the 10 scientific articles of milk heat-treatment into the book which titled "Effects of the heat-treatment on the nutritional quality of milk". Almost several hundred copies had been distributed at the symposium KSDST in 1989. Currently, no one was able to find these articles in anywhere including library etc. Thus, author decided to re-write that books in serials because these articles should be pass on their knowledge of milk science to the next generation of milk research.

  • The cost accounting of electricity and heat produced from an energy system is important in evaluating the economical efficiency and deciding the reasonable sale price. The OECOPC method, suggested by the author, was applied to a 650 MW combined cycle cogeneration system having 4 operating modes, and each unit cost of electricity and heat products was calculated. In case that a fuel cost is ${\\}400/kg$ and there are no direct and indirect cost, they were calculated as follows; electricity cost of ${\\}23,700/GJ$ at gas-turbine mode, electricity cost of ${\\}15,890/GJ$ at combined cycle mode, electricity cost of ${\\}14,146/GJ$ and heat cost of ${\\}6,466/GJ$ at cogeneration mode, and electricity cost of ${\\}14,387/GJ$ and heat cost of ${\\}4,421/GJ$ at combined cycle cogeneration mode. Further, these unit costs are applied to account benefit on this system. Since the suggested OECOPC method can be applied to any energy system, it is expected to contribute to cost accounting of various energy systems.

  • In this study, we attempted to estimate the degree of management of chestnut forestry households in Chungcheongnam-do and to provide information for establishing chestnut cultivation-related policies. The chestnut management standard diagnostic table consists of three major categories, namely, management base, management and sales capacity, and production technology levels, along with 19 subcategories. A survey of 309 chestnut forestry households was conducted from 2014 to 2019 in Gongju, Cheongyang, and Buyeo in Chungcheongnam-do. The average score for the 19 subcategories was 65.7 points, indicating that these areas have excellent management conditions. When the total score was higher, the output per hectare and the rate of top-grade products in the total output were also higher, indicating a significant correlation. These findings will be useful for providing consulting services to chestnut growers as they highlight the correlation between the higher scores of the indicators in the chestnut management standard diagnostic table and the management performance of the farmers. We found that the scores of the indicators for management and sale skill, such as management record and analysis, material purchase, and direct transaction with consumers, were relatively lower than those of the indicators for management base and production skill. It is assumed that the chestnut growers aging has led to negligence in recording details on incomes, expenditures, and work and lowered the willingness to make substantial profits. Therefore, it is essential to overcome these problems for profitable chestnut farming.

  • Customers' perceptions of information about a company's products or services have altered as a result of the development of ICT and social networks. This gives rise to a fact that buzz marketing, which is a marketing technique employed commonly in today's business and communication, has a significant impact on customers' electronic word of mouth intention (e-WOM). However, very few studies about this issue have been conducted so far, which reveal a gap in understanding buzz marketing from an academic perspective. Based on the results of a cross-sectional survey in Binh Duong city, this study investigates the efficiency and effect of buzz marketing on customers' e-WOM intention through mediating variables of message credibility. Data from 367 time-lagged individual samples were collected and analyzed by the structural equation modeling method (SEM). Results showed that creativity, clarity, and humor variables have a positive relationship with message credibility and then impact the intention to conduct e-WOM of social networks' users. Marketing campaigns employing the buzz technique should be launched with easy-to-understand and entertainable messages. Findings from this study also provide managers with a scientific understanding of buzz marketing and the effectiveness of this technique as well as reveal the potential for future studies to explore further in this area.

  • In order to analyze the distribution channel of marine products in Korea, this study shows SCM approach to redesign of the marine distribution channel with case study related to previous literatures. In view of the supply chain and the future impact of RFID on the marine SCM on the recognition of the importance of the seafood traceability system, this study also provides the possibility to accomplish effective SCM for integration of production, storage, transportation, delivery, and sale when RFID is used in the seafood distribution channel based on the expansion of awareness on the marine product traceability. The traceability system for seafood is considered as the distribution infrastructure established in RFID deployment. By introducing Lotte mart case, this case study also discusses the marine distribution structure in view of the supply chain, to present an effective foundation for supplying seafood throughout production, distribution, and consumption. This is achieved by introducing RFID in an ubiquitous environment, and suggesting far more efficient control planning throughout the seafood distribution channel in view of the expected effects resulting from the introduction. In addition, as the alternative of solving this situation, this study propose the supply chain in seafoods by comprehensive management in whole distribution channels. In the SCM in seafood perspectives, HACCP can take into account the whole seafood chain from the point of supply to the point of consumption when assessing hazards. As the contributions of this study, this study emphasizes the seafood industry first should require the establishment of the relevant infrastructure, for which the efforts of the government and demonstrative project participants are essential.

  • Based on increased popularity and use of social network services as a marketing tool, social commerce became an emerging trend in e-commerce platforms. Social commerce involves sellers offering potential consumers the products and services at a lower price in a limited time period. Through comparison of the performances of domestic social commerce websites, we found that the buying environment such as price, number of available products, and the remaining time period for sale has a significant difference influencing on the purchase decisions of consumers. This study aims to analyze the interaction effects and preference levels of four characteristics (price, discount rate, number of purchases and purchase time) by conducting choice-based conjoint analysis. Survey experiment was performed using a sample of 146 undergraduate and graduate students. The results showed that consumers importantly consider purchase time, discount rate, price, number of purchases in the order of their preference. Also, discount effect is more significant on purchase decisions than price effect and consumers distinguish less the differences among the buying environment characteristics in the closing days of purchase period. Customer segmentation using the preference levels of characteristics indicates that the preference levels have different effects in the purchase utility of each segment. The proposed customer segmentation and differences in feature utilities are expected to be valuable in forming future sales promotion strategies in social commerce.

  • A certain number of products are transported to be sold each month and some of them are returned for repair. In this study we first assume that the transported products are the ones that have been sold, Then nonparametric approach is applied to the warranty returns data to see how the reliability decreases over time. Parametric approach such as Weibull distribution is applied to the same data and the results for both nonparametric and parametric approaches are compared. Next we assume that there is a time lag between shipment and sale. Then both nonparametric and parametric approaches are applied to the time-lag data and the results are compared.

  • New breeding method by genetic engineering is expected as a key technology to solve food shortage due to the growing world population in the year 2000s. Many genetically modified organisms (GMOs) were already developed and the commercial cultivation had started. The first GMO, Flavr Savr tomato, which rotted at a much slower pace than ordinary ones, was developed in US in 1994. Since then, over than 70 different agricultural products including corn, cotton, soybean, papaya, potato, and squash made with genetically modified plants are reportedly on sale worldwide. Supporters favor the GMOs because they have greater yields, longer shelf lives and stronger resistance to disease and insects. On the other hand, opponents say that the supporters ignore a potential danger that they may damage the environment as well as human beings. To assure the safe development and use of GMOs as food and other biotech products, the possible risks on biological environment and human health should be throughly examined and regulated by developer and government. Because the biosafety problem is a global, environmental, and trade issue, a new international treaty is under development. The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety was adopted at the 1 st Extraordinary Conference of Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity which was held at Mont-real, Canada, Jan. 29th, 2000. The adoption of the Protocol is seen as a breakthrough in that it is based on the" Precautionary Principle" despite scientific uncertainties surrounding potential risks that GMOs may inflict on human health and the environment and that it has laid the ground for introduction of specific steps to handle international trading of GMOs. In this paper, the authors would like to introduce the current status and perspective of environmental and human risk assessment of GMOs.t of GMOs.
