  • Objective: In tropical, subtropical and arid zones, heat stress is the main cause of productivity reduction in cattle. When climate stressors occur, animals become thermal adapted through differential expression of some genes, including heat shock proteins (HSP) family. The aim of this study was to determine levels of expression of HSP60, HSP70, and HSP90 genes in Simmental cattle raised in tropical environments of Mexico. Methods: In this study, expression of HSP60, HSP70, and HSP90 genes was analyzed in 116 Simmental cattle from three farms with tropical climate located in western Mexico. Animals were sampled twice a day, in the morning and noon. Gene expression was evaluated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction using probes marked with fluorescence. The MIXED procedure of SAS with repeated measures was used for all statistical analysis. Results: HSP60 gene expression differences were found for sex (p = 0.0349). HSP70 gene differences were detected for sampling hour (p = 0.0042), farm (p<0.0001), sex (p = 0.0476), and the interaction sampling hour×farm (p = 0.0002). Gene expression differences for HSP90 were observed for farm (p<0.0001) and year (p = 0.0521). HSP70 gene showed to be a better marker of heat stress than HSP60 and HSP90 genes. Conclusion: Expression of HSP70 gene in Simmental herds of the tropical region of western México was different during early morning and noon, but the expression of the HSP60 and HSP90 genes was similar. Identification of resilient animals to heat stress will be useful in the genetic improvement of the Simmental breed.

  • The indonesian government wishes to increase farmers' by encouraging dairy farming. Since 1980, imported dairy cattle have been distributed on credit. Survey data from 1990 were used to study the average milk sales per cow and the economic parameters of dairy production of a sample of farm households on seven milk cooperatives East Java Province, in three agro-ecological areas, oriented to sugar cane, cassava and horticulture, respectively. in general, dairy production proved not to be economically attractive as returns to labour were similar to the rates for agricultural labour. The returns showed marked differences among the three areas studied. They were highest in the horticultural area. Analysis of the dairy units according to size showed a tendency for inputs as well as revenue per cow to decline as herd size increased. It is argued that a further increase in milk production in East Java can be stimulated by raising the farm gate price of milk, or by expanding dairy production into suitable, new areas.

  • There are many challenges to solve on how we will use IT infrastructures accepted as the best worldwide level for strength of country's competitiveness. Over the past years, IT environment has been formed to expand the basis of e-Business by policy, but little contributed to management efficiency such as improvement of business productivity through utilization of it. This paper explores the category of the related technology policies by classifying e-Business technologies and presents the problems and developmental directions for those policies by investigating the trends of the policies which have been framed so far. Especially, this article also examines the differences between the technology policy on the road map of 2010 e-Business policy and the IT839 strategy.

  • In the knowledge-based economy, technological capability is critical for the survival and growth of firms. Technological capability differs across firms depending on the structural and environmental conditions. In nature, the evaluation of technological capability is an intractable task and thus previous studies often employ such proxy measures as patent, productivity, or profitability. In this research, we define technological capability as a combination of the above three measures and investigate, by using the multi-variate statistical analysis, the characteristics of technological capability of electronics/IT firms of Korea. We first propose a taxonomy in which firms are classified into four clusters based on the differences in the nature of technological capability. Then, across clusters, we comparatively analyze the relationship between technological capability and structural/environmental factors of firms. Finally, the implications of empirical findings will be discussed. This study is a small-scale, descriptive one but will be extended and elaborated by augmenting the database and/or incorporating more variables.

  • Two-level factorial designs are popular in industry due to their simplicity, efficiency, graphical interpretation, and flexibility in sequential experimentation. However, experimenters are often frustrated when they have factors with more than two levels. There have been some works on design of experiments with two- and four-level factors, which mostly deal with qualitative four-level factors. This paper discusses differences between qualitative and quantitative four-level factors. Optimal designs are provided for some designs with four-level quantitative and two-level factors.

  • Recently, salaried company employees have a low desire to work and their quality of work life is deteriorating due to the reorganization of companies, high unemployment rates and insecure factors in politics, economy and society As individuals and companies are pursuing high performance and productivity In severe competition, the quality of personal life is despised. We need to reconsider this phenomenon and prepare for the countermeasures. With these backgrounds, this study performed a literature review and survey together to identify the current status of work desire, demographical differences in the sub factors of work desire and correlation between the sub factors of work desire, and between the work desire lowering factors and Improvement methods in order to improve the quality of work life of salaried company employees in the country.

  • Many studies reported that some organizations experience benefits of quality as well as the productivity due to the implementation of ISO9000. However, there are significant differences across countries, industries and organizations. This paper examines the current quality management practices in the Hong Kong construction industry under the ISO 9000 environment by a postal survey. It focuses on the success factors of ISO 9000 implementation in the industry. The findings support the views that changes in the organization are needed to realize the benefits brought by ISO 9000.

  • Competitive species have the same spatial distribution (habitat) and foraging behavior (niche), while non-competitive species have either different feeding behavior or spatial distribution. Therefore, ecological segregation among species of fish results rfom differences in foraging behavior and spatial distribution (Allen, 1984; Zhang 1988). To explore these ecological strategies among major small fish pelagics in Korean waters, distribution of CPUE in the Korean large purse seine fishery were examined. (omitted)

  • This work was done to investigate problems of cashew coating in a wooden-art industry such as ritual vessels and to improve a curing property of cashew film. The main problem in the cashew coating industry was a small-scale business, insufficiency of facilities, lack of knowledge about cashew resin and painting, and lack of a technology of productivity improvement by accelerated drying time of cashew film. In present, cashew coating for ritual vessels mostly used the petroleum as a thinner. The time of set to touch of cashew film thinning with petroleum on glass plates was increased with the increasement of the thinning proportion, but retarded from 3 to 11 times compared to that of an exclusive thinner according to thinning level. The addition of 20% aceton to petroleum contributed to the high reduction rate up to about 60% at the thinning level of 100%, which was effective to accelerate the drying time of cashew film. Even though only the petroleum or the petroleum-aceton(20%) mixture was used as a thinner, it did not exhibit any distinguishable differences in crack and appearance of cashew-film coated on Frexinus rhynchophylla after 5 cycles of soak under the vacuum-drying treatment.

  • This paper aims to investigate whether there is empirical evidence supporting the learning-to-export hypothesis, which has received little attention in the literature. By taking full advantage of plant-product level data from Korea during 1990-1998, we find some evidence for the learning-to-export effect, especially for the innovated product varieties with delayed exporters: their productivity, together with research and development and investment activity, was superior to their matched sample. On the other hand, this learning-to-export effect was not significantly pronounced for industries protected by import tariffs. Thus, our empirical findings suggest that it would be desirable to implement certain policy tools to promote the learning-to-export effect, whereas tariff protection is not justifiable for that purpose.
