Safety of Workers in Indian Mines: Study, Analysis, and Prediction

  • Background: The mining industry is known worldwide for its highly risky and hazardous working environment. Technological advancement in ore extraction techniques for proliferation of production levels has caused further concern for safety in this industry. Research so far in the area of safety has revealed that the majority of incidents in hazardous industry take place because of human error, the control of which would enhance safety levels in working sites to a considerable extent. Methods: The present work focuses upon the analysis of human factors such as unsafe acts, preconditions for unsafe acts, unsafe leadership, and organizational influences. A modified human factor analysis and classification system (HFACS) was adopted and an accident predictive fuzzy reasoning approach (FRA)-based system was developed to predict the likelihood of accidents for manganese mines in India, using analysis of factors such as age, experience of worker, shift of work, etc. Results: The outcome of the analysis indicated that skill-based errors are most critical and require immediate attention for mitigation. The FRA-based accident prediction system developed gives an outcome as an indicative risk score associated with the identified accident-prone situation, based upon which a suitable plan for mitigation can be developed. Conclusion: Unsafe acts of the worker are the most critical human factors identified to be controlled on priority basis. A significant association of factors (namely age, experience of the worker, and shift of work) with unsafe acts performed by the operator is identified based upon which the FRA-based accident prediction model is proposed.

Factor Analysis and Intergroup Awareness Investigation of Workers' Safety in Logistic Center (물류센터 근로자의 안전인식에 대한 요인분석 및 집단간 인식 비교)

  • This study is to examine the workers' awareness of the safety in logistic centers. For that purpose, the exploratory factor analysis of workers' safety awareness in logistic centers was performed at first, and the 6 variables extracted from the factor analysis were then used to investigate the difference in intergroup awareness of the safety environment in the logistic centers. We administered a survey to 147 workers attending the logistic centers and collected data from them. The results of the study showed that the intergroup awareness of the safety environment turned out to be statistically different from each other in terms of working environment, safe behavior, work risk, safety knowledge and effort, risk justification and compromising attitudes. Experiences in industrial accidents influenced awareness of working environment, work risk and risk justification. The group who experienced accidents is more likely to feel risky and unsatisfied with working place, and their awareness toward risk justification was high as well. It was also observed that there exists awareness difference between manager group and worker group. The group who manages the working place showed more positive awareness of working environment, safe behavior, work risk, safety knowledge and effort, risk justification and compromising attitudes than the worker group. On the contrary, the worker group showed high recognition in risk of working place, and felt that they are willing to compromise on safety for increasing production. The scale of the logistic center produced negative influence on awareness of safety. The group in small logistic center showed the highest awareness in safety, whereas the group in large logistic center with more than 100 workers showed the highest awareness in risk. They are more likely to deviate from correct and safe work procedures due to over-familiarity with the job, as well. The findings suggest that there is a need for the safety management and education to change the workers' understanding and attitudes towards safety.

The Effects of Labor Force Compositions on the Performance of Korean Venture Businesses (벤처기업의 인력구성이 경영성과에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper analyzed the effects of changes in temporary workers on firm performances, and the effects of different workforce portions of business functions on corporate performances, respectively, using Korean venture business survey conduected in 2013. Results show that the performance of venture businesses decreases significantly, as the portion of temporary workers increases, which is more pronounced in small companies than in medium companies. In addition, the portions of workforce for administration, R&D, production, and sales don't have uniform effect on firm performance, where medium companies are affected significantly by the portions of production and sales, while small companies do not show significant relationship. This analysis implies that innovative firms, based on knowledge workers, need to use caution when they plan to increase temporary workers, which may lead to lower performance. However, we need further research for the basic causes of the possible lower performance.

Copulation Environment Favorable for colony development of the European Bumblebee, Bombus terrersis

  • We investigated mating conditions about care temperature of queen before mating, mating period, and number of queen per mating cage to improve mating rate of Bombus terrestris. Among $19^{\circ}C$, $22^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, care temperatures of queen before mating, queen cared at $19^{\circ}C$ was more effective than those at $22^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ in death rate during care and mating periods, and colony development In case of mating period, oviposition rate and preoviposition periods at queen mated during 3 days were 89.3% and 11.4 days, respectively, which was higher and earlier than those of queen mated during 5 days and 7 days. The rate of worker emergence, colony foundation and progeny-queen production at 3 days-mated queen were also 2.0-11.6% higher than those at queen mated during 5 days and 7 days. In number of queen per mating cage, the rate of worker emergence, colony foundation and progeny-queen production queen mated at mating cage with 10 queens and 30 males were 41.5%, 25.9% and 23.2%, respectively. These values correspond to 1.5-6.8 folds those queen mated at cage with 20 queens and 30 queens. Therefore, we supposed that care temperature favorable for B. terrestris queen was $19^{\circ}C$ and the period need to mating was 3 days, and the number of queen per mating cage ($55{\times}45{\times}65\;cm$) was 10.

  • Health risk assessment is applied to streamlining LCA(Life Cycle Assessment) using Monte carlo simulation for probabilistic/stochastic exposure and risk distribution analysis caused by data variability and uncertainty. A case study was carried out to find benefits of this application. BTC(Benzene, Trichloroethylene, Carbon tetrachloride mixture alias) personal exposure cases were assumed as production worker(in workplace), manager(in office) and business man(outdoor). These cases were different from occupational retention time and exposure concentration for BTC consumption pattern. The result of cancer risk in these 3 scenario cases were estimated as $1.72E-4{\pm}1.2E+0$(production worker; case A), $9.62E-5{\pm}1.44E-5$(manger; case B), $6.90E-5{\pm}1.16E+0$(business man; case C), respectively. Portions of over acceptable risk 1.00E-4(assumed standard) were 99.85%, 38.89% and 0.61%, respectively. Estimated BTC risk was log-normal pattern, but some of distributions did not have any formal patterns. Except first impact factor(BTC emission quantity), sensitivity analysis showed that main effective factor was retention time in their occupational exposure sites. This case study is a good example to cover that LCA with probabilistic risk analysis tool can supply various significant information such as statistical distribution including personal/environmental exposure level, daily time activity pattern and individual susceptibility. Further research is needed for investigating real data of these input variables and personal exposure concentration and application of this study methodology.

Devising a Training Method for Assembly Work by Employing Disassembly

  • Efficiency in work training is a perennial issue due to high-diversity low-volume production, particularly for manufacturers producing office machines which are manually assembled by workers. To reduce the training cost, parts used in training are usually reused; a trainer disassembles a product assembled by a worker in training. This paper proposes a training method that employs disassembly usually performed by a trainer. This method assigns both assembly and disassembly to a worker in training, in contrast to the conventional method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is experimentally discussed in terms of learning assembly motions and work procedure at each learning stage, namely, "undergoing learning," "immediately after learning," and "seven days after learning." The effectiveness of the training method is confirmed. The method improves the stability of work procedure recollection immediately after training. Furthermore, at seven days after training, it improves retention of the assembly motions and work procedure, and also promotes and maintains memory related to product structure.

Colony Developmental Characteristics of the Bumblebee Queen, Bombus ignitus by the First Oviposition Day

  • It was investigated whether developmental characteristics of foundation queens of Bombus ignitus collected in the 4 localities in Korea would be affected by the first oviposition days of them. The first ovipostion day was classified as 1-4 days (immediate early), 5-6days (early), 7-10 days (delayed early), 11-20 days{medium), 21- 40 days (late), and above 41 days (very late). The queen that had the early first oviposition day, i.e., laid eggs so early after starting to be raised indoors, showed much higher rate of colony foundation and progeny-queen production and much shorter period of colony foundation and worker emergence. Besides, the numbers of worker and progeny-queen emerged from the queen that had the early first oviposition day were higher than those of the queen that had the late first oviposition. In results, the queen that had the early first oviposition day could make colony stronger and could make colony formation period shorter, therefore, the first oviposition day of foundation queen was proved to be a criterion for the selection of super colonies when B. ignitus is raised indoors.

  • In labor-intensive enterprise, such as garment factory, assembly line is widely used as a manufacturing process for reducing costs and production time. However, for the sake of the various working capacity of worker, idle or delay may happen and influence the rear processes. If these unforeseeable delay happened continuously, it may influence the whole manufacturing process and a model, which is called limited-cycle model with multiple periods (LCMwMP), is assumed to evaluate the influence risk. In order to minimize the risk, the assignment of the workers is focused on. In this paper, we deal with an assembly line as LCMwMP model when two kinds of workers exist, whose efficiency is assumed to two different groups. We consider an optimization problem for finding an assignment of workers to the line that minimizes total expected risk, which is exchanged to expected cost by reset model of LCMwMP. First, reset model as a simple model of LCMwMP is introduced. Then, some hypotheses of the rules of the optimal worker assignment are proposed and some numerical experiments are researched assuming the processing time as Erlang distribution. Finally, the other rules on other certain conditions are discussed.

Correlation Analysis between Fatigue and Performance Shaping Factor for Alternation Worker's (Focused on the Semiconductor industry) (교대근무자의 피로와 수행영향인자 간의 상관관계 분석 (반도체 산업을 중심으로))

  • For the past 25 years, Korean semiconductor has experienced enormous growth to be the highest production country in the world. Semiconductor industry is very time sensitive and driven by technology and process, and requires 24-hour full operation. The environment includes many different types of equipment, utilities, different gases and toxic chemicals as well as high voltage electricity. We have performed a survey with 3-shift engineers and workers in one line. The content of the questionnaire was about the correlation between fatigue and performance shaping factor (work type and work ability), and as a result we were able to deduce the correlation, p-value and the pattern of scatter plot. The shape of the model was made of 4 blocks for fatigue, 5 blocks for work type and 5 blocks for work ability, i. e. 14 blocks in total. As a conclusion to this findings, there was a correlation between fatigue and work type and work ability specifically in semiconductor industry, and we need some effort to reduce this.

Dynamic 3D Worker Pose Registration for Safety Monitoring in Manufacturing Environment based on Multi-domain Vision System (다중 도메인 비전 시스템 기반 제조 환경 안전 모니터링을 위한 동적 3D 작업자 자세 정합 기법)

  • A single vision system limits the ability to accurately understand the spatial constraints and interactions between robots and dynamic workers caused by gantry robots and collaborative robots during production manufacturing. In this paper, we propose a 3D pose registration method for dynamic workers based on a multi-domain vision system for safety monitoring in manufacturing environments. This method uses OpenPose, a deep learning-based posture estimation model, to estimate the worker's dynamic two-dimensional posture in real-time and reconstruct it into three-dimensional coordinates. The 3D coordinates of the reconstructed multi-domain vision system were aligned using the ICP algorithm and then registered to a single 3D coordinate system. The proposed method showed effective performance in a manufacturing process environment with an average registration error of 0.0664 m and an average frame rate of 14.597 per second.
