Argo drifters provide information of the vertical structure in the water column and have a potential for the improvement of understanding phytoplankton primary production and biogeochemical cycles in combination with ocean color satellite data, which can obtain the horizontal distribution of phytoplankton biomass in the surface layer. Our examples show that using Argo drifters with satellite-measured horizontal distribution of phytoplankton biomass at the sea surface allow an improved understanding of the development of the spring bloom. The other possible uses of Argo drifter are discussed.
Recently interest on production of biogas from biomass resources has increased because of climate change in worldwide. In this study, anaerobic digestion efficiency of 17 different types of agricultural waste was evaluated using biochemical methane production potential estimated from the International biochemical methane potential standard method (Germany VDI4630). As a result, theoretical biochemical methane potential ($B_{th}$) of agricultural waste biomass ranged from 0.266 to $0.488Nm^3kg^{-1}$-Volatile Solid $(VS)_{added}$. Ultimate biochemical methane potential ($B_u$) of agricultural waste biomass ranged between 0.176 and $0.417Nm^3kg^{-1}-VS_{added}$. The agricultural waste biomass anaerobic biodegradability with $B_u/B_{th}$ and VDI4630 determined by VS contents was 36.0~95.9% and 30.8~91.1%, respectively. Ultimate methane potential and anaerobic biodegradability given by the VS term showed more reasonable results.
Biomass has been used for energy sources from the prehistoric age. Biomass are converted into solid, liquid or gaseous fuels and are used for heating, electricity generation or for transportation recently. Solid biofuels such as bio-chips or bio-pellet are used for heating or electricity generation. Liquid biofuels such as biodiesel and bioethanol from sugars or lignocellulosics are well known renewable transportation fuels. biogas produced from organic waste are also used for heating, generation and vehicles. Biomass resources for the production of above mentioned biofuels are classified under following 4 categories, such as forest biomass, agricultural residue biomass, livestock manure and municipal organic wastes. The energy potential of those biomass resources existing in Korea are estimated. The energy potential for dry biomass (forest, agricultural, municipal waste) were estimated from their heating value contained, whereas energy potential of wet biomass (livestock manure, food waste, waste sludge) is calculated from the biological methane potential of them on annual basis. Biomass resources potential of those 4 categories in Korea are estimated to be as follows. Forest biomass 355.602 million TOE, agricultural biomass 4.019 million TOE, livestock manure biomass 1.455 million TOE, and municipal organic waste 1.074 million TOE are available for biofuels production annually.
Chemical production by anaerobic bacterial fermentations was an important microbiological topic in the past due to both fundamental and applied aspects related to acetone-butanol production prior to its replacement by chemical synthetic routes from petroleum. Presently, the depletion and price-escalation of petroleum has regenerated a great interest in the potential of anaerobic bacteria to transform the renewable resouces such as biomass and wastes into chemical feed-stocks and fuels.
Small ruminants form an important economic and ecological niche in small farm systems and agriculture. Their current low level of contribution is dismal, and is not commensurate with the potential capacity for higher levels of production. The context for productivity enhancement and increased socio-economic contribution relates to large sizes of small ruminant populations; wide distribution across various agro-ecological zones and production systems; and diversity of breeds, where 66% of all goat and 57% of sheep breeds in Asia are found in China, India and Pakistan. The advantages and disadvantages of small ruminants over larger ruminants are enumerated with reference to adaptation and environment, small size, production systems and products and interactions with the environment. Discussion focuses especially on efficiency of meat production and niche markets for higher-priced goat meat, and inefficient marketing systems given an estimated 40-45% loss of income to farmers presently. Increasing the quantity of meat produced is related to live weight and the total number of animals at Slaughter, which in turn, depend on the total number of offsprings weaned and lifetime productivity. At the national level, priority attention is essential to build up numbers in concerted breeding programmes, selection for efficiency of reproduction and meat production, and improvements to make traditional markets and marketing systems to respond to the changing environmental and consumer preferences. Post-production systems are neglected and improvements are associated with collection, handling, marketing, slaughter facilities and consumer requirements. Potential opportunities to expand and benefit from integrating small ruminants into annual and perennial cropping systems remain largely unexplored. Important development imperatives include choice of species and better use of available breeds, appropriate production systems that match available feed resources, and linkages between production, products and by-products to markets. Affirmative action is necessary, backed by official policy support, institutional commitment and increased resource use, that can target poverty and directly benefit the poor, and shift subsistence production to a more market-oriented opportunity. These efforts together constitute the challenges for both the owners and producers of small ruminants in the immediate future, as also the will to accelerate increased productivity, improve their livelihoods and promote rural growth.

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) which can produce uniform luminescence need a very difficult and complex procedure because LEDs have strong and straight optical property. One of the major parameters for LED production is the determination of the viewing angle. However, in the present, there is still no available production technology to measure LED viewing angle and optical property. In this study, we developed a five-side LED viewing angle and optical property measurement system, having a source meter that uses a high speed switching photo relay instead of a mercury relay. This new measurement system can measure the viewing angle at a very high accuracy of ${\pm}0.66^{\circ}$. This new technology presents a great potential for fast and reliable LED mass production, which can significantly cut down the cost from savings in production time.
The study investigated the effect of thermo-alkaline pretreatment on the solubilization of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and its potential to enhance of thermophilic anaerobic digestion, focusing on biochemical methane potential (BMP) and methane production rate, using two different particle sizes of PHB (1500 ㎛ and 400 ㎛). Thermo-alkaline pretreatment tests were conducted at 90 ℃ for 24 hours with varying NaOH dosages from 0-80% (w/w). BMP tests with untreated PHB exhibited methane production ranging from 150.4~225.4 mL CH4/g COD and 21.5~24.2 mL CH4/g VSS/d, indicating higher methane production for smaller particle sizes of PHB, 400 ㎛. Thermo-alkaline pretreatment tests achieved a 95.3% PHB solubilization efficiency when 400 ㎛ PHB particles were treated with 80% NaOH dosage at 90 ℃ for 24 hours. BMP tests with pretreated PHB showed substantial improvement in thermophilic anaerobic digestion, with an increase of up to 112% in BMP and up to 168% in methane production rate. The results suggest that a combined pretreatment process, including physical (400 ㎛ PHB particles) and thermo-alkaline (90 ℃, 40-80% NaOH dosage, and 24 hours reaction time), is required for high-rate thermophilic anaerobic digestion of PHB with enhanced methane production.
Anaerobic co-digestion of swine manure and food waste for biogas production was performed in serum bottles at various volatile solids(VS) contents and mixing ratios of two substrates(swine manure:food waste=$100:0{\sim}0:100$). Through kinetic mode of surface methodology, the methane production was fitted to a Gompertz equation. The ultimate methane production potential of swine manure alone was lower than that of food waste regardless of VS contents. However, it was appeared that maximum methane production potentials in 80 : 20 of the mixing rate at VS 3% was enhanced at 144.7%, compared to its only swine manure. The potential increased up to 815.71 ml/g VS fed as VS concentration and food composition increased up to 3.0% and 20%, respectively. The ultimate amount of methane produced had significantly a positive relationship with that of methane yield rate. Overall, it would be strongly recommended that feeding stocks use 20% of mixing ratio of food waste based on VS 3% contents when operating the anaerobic reactor on site at $35^{\circ}C$ if not have treatment of its anaerobic waste water.

The purpose of this study is to estimate potential yield (PY) for Korean west coast fisheries using the holistic production method (HPM). HPM involves the use of surplus production models to apply input data of catch and standardized fishing efforts. HPM compared the estimated parameters of the surplus production from four different models: the Fox model, CYP model, ASPIC model, and maximum entropy model. The PY estimates ranged from 174,232 metric tons (mt) using the CYP model to 238,088 mt using the maximum entropy model. The highest coefficient of determination ($R^2$), the lowest root mean square error (RMSE), and the lowest Theil's U statistic (U) for Korean west coast fisheries were obtained from the maximum entropy model. The maximum entropy model showed relatively better fits of data, indicating that the maximum entropy model is statistically more stable and accurate than other models. The estimate from the maximum entropy model is regarded as a more reasonable estimate of PY. The quality of input data should be improved for the future study of PY to obtain more reliable estimates.

Due to the decrease in coastal productivity and deterioration in the quality of ecosystem which result from the excessive overfishing of fisheries resources and the environmental pollution, fisheries resources in the Korean waters hit the dangerous level in respect of quantity and quality. In order to manage sustainable and effective fisheries resources, it is necessary to suggest the potential yield (PY) for clarifying available fisheries resources in the Korean waters. So far, however, there have been few studies on the estimation methods for PY in Korea. In addition, there have been no studies on the comparative analysis of the estimation methods and the substantial estimation methods for PY targeted for large marine ecosystem (LME) For the reasonable management of fisheries resources, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive study on the estimation methods for the PY which combines population dynamics and ecosystem dynamics. To reflect the research need, this study conducts a comparative analysis of estimation methods for the PY in the Korean waters of the East Sea to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each method, and suggests the estimation method which considered both population dynamics and ecosystem dynamics to supplement shortcomings of each method. In this study, the maximum entropy (ME) model of the holistic production method (HPM) is considered to be the most reasonable estimation method due to the high reliability of the estimated parameters. The results of this study are expected to be used as significant basic data to provide indicators and reference points for sustainable and reasonable management of fisheries resources.
