This study was carried out to separately assess the production of post-culture, germinating, growing, and resting stages of Lentinula edodes grown in a smart cultivation facility based on ICT technology. The cultivation environment of the greenhouse facility was controlled to remain at different set points throughout a range of high ambient temperatures. Production of Sanjo-701-ho, which is a typical summer cultivar, and the new cultivar Sanjo-701-ho were tested in this ICT-based smart cultivation system. Sanjo-701-ho produced 353.7 g/bag of mushrooms from June to October, while Sanjo-701-ho produced 270.4 g/bag. These production amounts were stable over the high-temperature range of $20-35^{\circ}C$.
To produce the functional food materials from edible mushrooms, hot-water extracts from 70 kinds of mushroom mycelia were examined for anti-complementary activity and Phellinus linteus showed the highest activity through the complement fIxation test. The maximum production of Phellinus linteus mycelia with anti-complementary activity was observed in culture medium containing soluble starch 3.0%, peptone 0.3%, yeast extract 0.4%, $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ 0.1%, $K_2HPO_4$ 0.2% and in the culture conditions controlled at initial pH 7.0, $30^{\circ}C$ and 150 rpm by the rotary shaker. In addition, the maximum production of mycelial dry weight was 15 mg/mL after 18 days under the optimal conditions, and anti-complementary activity was reached to 88% in 5 L-jar fermenter.
This studies investigated the effect of concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl) on occurrence and growth of fruitbody in oyster mushrooms, Pleurotus spp. Our experiments divided into two parts. When the water contents in substrate were added with sodium chloride solution in cotton waste box cultivation as a first experiment, the growth of mushroom was damaged as the concentration was increased, even though there was a little difference according to the strains. The yield in 1.0% NaCl solution was decreased to 72% compared to non-treated plot while that in 3.0% solution was only 2% of the non-treated plot. Morphological characteristics of mushrooms cultivated in substrate with the different concentration of the solution showed different results. For example, the size and thickness of pilei were not influenced by NaCl concentration, but the length of stipes and individual weight were much influenced. In plastic box cultivation filled with cotton waste, watering treatment with the different concentrations of sodium chloride solution, the second experiment, did not show any difference according to the concentration until 1.0% solution but there was a little difference according to the strains. The productivity of fruitbody started to decrease at 2.0% of the solution and the yield and quality of mushroom in 3.0% solution treatment were generally low. After the second flush, days for mushroom sprouting were generally prolonged in proportion to the solution concentration. Taken altogether, the second experiment did not show a clear effect as the case of the first experiment.

Termitomyces albuminosus has been recognized to have the best mushrooms in China, in terms of taste and aroma. The efficacy of these mushrooms has been recorded in the botanical list. However, research on the development of their artificial culture methods is necessary. In this study, we prepared an organic solvent extract and a hot water extract to understand the development of compounds and functional foods with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The IC50 value of DPPH radical scavenging activity of the hot water extract (TA4) was 1.5 mg/mL and the IC50 value of the MeOH fraction (TA2) was 1.93 mg/mL. The anti-inflammatory activity was investigated by the inhibition of NO production. EtOAc fraction (TA1) is a crude extract, but 79% of NO production was inhibited at 100 ㎍/mL. NO was not produced at 200 ㎍/mL. TA1-5-6, from TA1 inhibited NO production by 15% as compared to the positive control at 15 ㎍/mL, and completely inhibited NO production at 30 ㎍/mL. No cytotoxicity was observed at 50 ㎍/mL. TA2-1-5 from the MeOH fraction (TA2) inhibited more than 75% of NO production at 30 ㎍/mL; cytotoxicity was very low even at 50 ㎍/mL. In conclusion, by selective solvent selection, it was possible to manufacture an extract with no cytotoxicity and excellent biological activities. Furthermore, the extracts showed potential for developing various functional foods and drugs.
Objectives : This experiment was conducted to evaluate the inhibitory effects against lung metastasis and promotion of splenocytes by water-soluble components from five mushrooms extracts (WEFM): Garnoderma frondosa, Corious versicolor, Codyceps militaris, Hericium erinaceus and Lentinula edodes. Methods : Colon 26-L5 carcinoma cells were injected through the tail vein to induce lung metastatic cancer. Changes in weight of lung were observed and cytokine level was analyzed to evaluate immunological changes. Results : Oral administration of WEFM resulted in a significant inhibition of lung metastasis after intravenous injection of colon 26-L5 cells in a dose-dependent manner. There was also a significant increase in T cell and B cell mitogenic stimuli and production of IFN-g by splenocytes stimulated with Con A compared to untreated controls. Conclusion : WEFM may have anti-tumor activities via Th1-type dominant immune responses.

Extracts derived from various medical mushrooms have been reported to have antitumor and immuno-modulatory properties. In order to investigate the antitumor activity of keumsa Linteusan, the water extract of Phellinus Iimteus, HT1080 cells, a human fibrosarcoma cell line, were treated with it and changes in cellular migration potential was tested in vitro. At a concentration range below 1,000 $\mu$g/mL, Linteusan blocked, in a dose dependent manner, the migration of cells through Matrigel as well as Boyden chamber without affecting the viability of the cells. Prolonged treatment of HT1080 cells with Linteusan suppressed TNFa induced production of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 as well as basal level expression of MMP-2. Linteusan also affected the adhesion of the cells to fibronectin-coated surfaces. The effect of Linteusan on cell signaling pathways was also tested. Linteusan specifically affected TNF-$\alpha$ induced phosphorylation of AKT in a dose-dependent manner, while phosphorylation levels of ERK remained unaffected. These data indicate that Linteusan blocks the migration of HT1080 cells by affecting various processes associated with cell migration such as the expression of matrix degradingenzymes, cell adhesion, and AKT-medicated cellular signaling pathways.
Doxorubicin is a powerful anticancer antibiotic extensively used in the treatment of several types of cancers. Long-term administration of this drug results in cumulative dose related cardiotoxicity due to enhanced production of free radicals leading to oxidative stress. Our earlier investigations have demonstrated significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antitumour properties of Ganoderma lucidum extracts. We extended our investigations to evaluate the protective effect of Ganoderma lucidum extract against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. Administration of 3 doses of doxorubicin, 6 mg/kg body weights, i.p. per each dose, alternative days, showed dear signs of cardiotoxicity in rats. The drug enhanced serum creatine kinase (CK) activity and lipid peroxidation in tissue drastically. The drug also induced significant decrease in GSH level and activities of CAT, SOD and GPx. Administration of methanolic extract of G.lucidum (500 and 1,000 mg/kg body weight) significantly increased the level of GSH and activities of CAT, SOD and GPx. Activity of CK was significantly lowered in a dose dependent manner. The treatment also caused significant decrease in lipid peroxidation (MDA). The results thus indicated that methanolic extract of G.lucidum prevented oxidative stress caused by doxorubicin administration and the increase in serum CK activity and lipid peroxidation in the tissue. The experimental findings suggest the therapeutic potential of G.lucidum as adjuvant in cancer chemotherapy.

This study was conducted to evaluate the yield, nutrient characteristics, ruminal solubility, degradability and disappearance of spent mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) substrates for ruminants. The annual yield of spent Agaricus bisporus substrates was measured to be about 210,000 tons (M/T) in South Korea. The surface soil-removed spent substrates had nutritional characteristics of high crude ash (375 g/kg) and Ca (32 g/kg), medium protein (134 g/kg CP), and high fiber (384 g/kg NDF on a DM basis). Compared with initial mushroom substrates, spent mushroom substrates had twice higher (p<0.0001) CP content and 22.0% lower (p<0.0001) NDF content on an organic matter basis. Compared with raw rice straw, spent rice straw had much higher (p<0.05) predicted ruminal degradabilities and disappearances of DM and CP and a little lower (p<0.05) predicted degradability and disappearance of NDF. In conclusion, the general feed-nutritional value of spent mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) substrates appeared to improve after cultivation of mushrooms.

Chronic arsenicosis is a major environmental health hazard throughout the world, including India. Animals and human beings are affected due to drinking of arsenic contaminated ground water, due to natural mineral deposits, arsenical pesticides or improperly disposed arsenical chemicals. Arsenic causes cancer with production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are neutralized by an elaborate antioxidant defense system consisting of enzymes and numerous non-enzymatic antioxidants. Dietary antioxidant supplements are useful to counteract the carcinogenesis effects of arsenic. Oyster mushroom lectins can be regarded as ingredients of popular foods with biopharmaceutical properties. A variety of compounds have been isolated from mushrooms, which include polysaccharides and polysaccharopeptides with immune-enhancing effects. Lectins are beneficial in reducing arsenic toxicity due to anticarcinogenetic roles and may have therapeutic application in people suffering from chronic exposure to arsenic from natural sources, a global problem that is especially relevant to millions of people on the Indian subcontinent.

King Oyster(Pleurotus eryngii) is one of the most promising mushrooms produced on the domestic farms. The quality as well as quantity of King oyster is sensitively affected by micro climate factors such as temperature, relative humidity, $CO_2$ concentration, and light intensity. To safely produce high-quality King oysters year round, it is required that the environmental factors be carefully controlled by well designed structures equipped with various facilities and control systems. In this study, we are focusing on carrying out growing experiment to find out reasonable range of each environmental factor together with economic and safe structures influencing on the optimal productivity of king oyster mushroom. The optimal productivity will be evaluated by considering the quality and quantity of mushroom production, energy requirements, facility construction and management cost, etc.
