  • Product liability is the law of the manufacturer's responsibilities for the consumers' personal injuries or the losses of property resulted from defective products. In today's many countries, the product liability law are being enacted because of the safety of product use and the protection of consumer's right. In korea, the product liability is going to enforce on July 1, 2002. Though the construction of product liability response system is urgent situation, domestic manufacture company's PL response system is not nearly prepared in present. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to discuss the Quality Management's importance and the PL countermeasures by presenting the difference of PL response system construction degree by the Quality Management Maturity degree

  • This paper focuses on a BOM(Bill of Materials) management problem for a small and medium manufacturing company that produce automobile parts. Automobile part's manufacturers produce various products due to various automobile characteristics such as types, colors, and the other options of car. These products are classified into product groups with common parts. And each product group is regarded as a product family. This paper proposes an efficient and effective EXCEL-based BOM management scheme using characteristics of the product family. And we have implemented the practical EXCEL-based BOM management system for real small and medium automobile part's manufacturing companies.

  • The IC packaging industry heavily relies on shop floor information, necessitating the development of a model to flexibly define shop floor information and timely handle manufacturing data. This study presents a novel data model of product manufacturing flow to define shop floor information to effectively respond to accelerated developments in IC package industry. The proposed data model consists of four modules: operation template setup, general process setup, enhanced bill of manufacture (EBOMfr) setup, and work-order process setup. The data model can flexibly define the required shop floor information and decision rules for shop floor product manufacturing flow, allowing one to easily adopt changes of the product and on the shop floor. However, to handle floor dynamics of the IC packaging industry, this work also proposes a WIP (i.e. work-in-process) system for monitoring and controlling the product manufacturing flow on the shop floor. The WIP system integrates the data model with a WIP execution module. Furthermore, an illustrative example, the MIRL WIP System, developed by Mechanical Industrial Research Laboratories of Industrial Technology Research Institute, demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed model.

  • In recent, a general trend is observed towards more customized products and shorter product life cycles in manufacturing enterprises. In these enterprises, customers often wish to influence the product they order and to get a variant of product that meets their requirements. This is called as customer-oriented make-to-order manufacturing environment. This paper establishes a methodology of implementing information system for developing product data integration system (PDIS) which is suitable for customer-oriented make-to-order manufacturing enterprise, and also presents the case of implementing PDIS for a ship engine product in 'H' heavy industry using the established methodology. At present, the implemented PDIS is successfully operating. As a result, PDIS reduces delivery time and improves customer relationships. Moreover, the case shows that PDIS can be used as a tool for improving inter-department coordination within a company during product life cycle.

  • In this paper, the difficulties involved in analyzing and designing a management system for product development are discussed with reference to reducing the impact of products on the environment. We propose some models and methods to analyze information behavior in the process of product development based on a fusion model which integrates the assessments of users’ needs, the environment, and available technology. These models and methods are subsequently applied to the development of a new packaging material. The results of this case study allow us to identify effective information for the design of a management system for product development to reduce the impact of products on the environment.

  • It is hot issue to get the competitiveness of product through reliability-growth as well as availability and safety in almost high-technology industry including military, chemistry, nuclear, telecommunication, transportation service and so on. In advanced countries, worldwide leading companies have tried to improve and develop high-reliability product as well as reliability management system(IEC60300). We investigate reliability certification systems for product and management system. Additionally, we study the feasibility on the adoption of dependability management system(IEC60300) by empirical survey on companies with product-reliability certification(R-mark) in Korea.

  • The purposes of this study were to 1) identify types and usage levels of production 2) classify apparel manufacturers based on production systems and 3) investigate relationship between characteristics of apparel manufacturers and production system. Apparel manufacturer's characteristics included product line and the number of employees. For this study, the questionnaires were administered to 215 apparel manufacturers in metropolitan area from Feb. to Mar. 1998. Employing a sample of 201, data were analyzed by using factor analysis, descriptive statistics, cluster analysis, discriminant analysis, and multivariate analysis of variance(MANOVA). The following are the results or this study : 1. The production system was identified as three types of production system such as the management centered system, the product centered system and the worker centered system. 2. Based on the three types of the production system, apparel manufacturer were classified into manager centered and product centered groups. 3. With respect to product line, men's wear manufactures were operated the most frequently by manager centered and product centered groups. 3. With respect to product line, men's wear manufacturers were operated the most frequently by management centered system and women's wear manufacturers were operated the most frequently by worker centered system. With respect to the number of employees, apparel manufacturers comprising 5∼19 employees were performed the least frequently worker centered system, while those comprising 50∼99 and 100∼299 employees the least frequently worker centered system.
