  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of post-curing method on the flexural strength of provisional restorative resins produced by a digital light processing printer. Methods: A total of 20 specimens were produced, with a length of 64 mm, width of 10 mm, and thickness of 3.3 mm using a digital light processing printer. Two types of provisional restorative resins made with different post-curing methods were investigated and divided into conventional and vacuum groups. For the flexural strength test, each group was prepared by each method according to ISO 10477, and the flexural strength was measured with a universal testing machine. For statistical analysis, data were analyzed by independent t-test and Mann-Whitney U test. Results: The flexural strengths of the conventional and vacuum groups were 151.89 MPa and 131.94 MPa, respectively, showing a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, provisional restorative resins produced with vacuum demonstrated lower flexural strength than those produced with conventional postcuring method.

  • As the number of companion animals reaches 15 million in 2022, the pet wear market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of about 14.5% from KRW 1.5684 trillion in 2014 to a market size of over KRW 6 trillion in 2027. However, most of the pet clothing and various supplies currently in circulation are either cheap, low-quality products imported from China or other countries, or expensive products released by overseas luxury brands. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a brand that can compete with luxury products coming from overseas by developing premium pet fashion products using high-end functional fabrics produced domestically. This study seeks to propose ways to revitalize the domestic pet fashion market by examining the current status of global pet fashion, the domestic textile industry, and the current status of the pet fashion market. The suggestions and expected effects are as follows. First, active support is needed for the development of products using domestically produced fabrics, such as raising awareness through various subsidy projects and contests. Second, it is expected that small and medium-sized businesses will be revitalized through the production of pet fashion products using high-quality functional knit fabrics produced in northern Gyeonggi Province. Third, it is necessary to produce high-quality premium products through continuous and intensive support from the government and collaboration between large corporations and small and medium-sized enterprises. Fourth, there is an urgent need to provide opportunities to train experts for the expected effects of starting businesses and creating new jobs.

  • In this study, a diaphragm-type pressure sensor was developed using multi-layer(four-layer) graphene produced at 1 nm thickness by thermally transferring single-layer graphene produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to a 6" silicon wafer. By measuring the gauge factor, we investigated whether it was possible to produce a pressure sensor of consistent quality. As a result of the measurement, the pressure sensor using multilayer graphene showed linearity and had a gauge factor of about 17.5. The gauge factor of the multilayer graphene-based pressure sensor produced through this study is lower than that of doped silicon, but is more sensitive than a general metal sensor, showing that it can be sufficiently used as a commercialized sensor.

  • The usage of fiber-reinforced polymer materials increases in the construction sector due to their advantages in terms of high mechanical strength, lightness, corrosion resistance, low density and high strength/density ratio, low maintenance and painting needs, and high workability. In this study, it is aimed to improve mechanical properties of GFRP box profiles, produced by pultrusion method, by filling the polymer concrete into them. Within the scope of study, hybrid use of polymer concrete produced with GFRP box profiles was investigated. Hybrid pressure and bending specimens were produced by filling polymer concrete (polyester resin manufactured with natural sand and stone chips) into GFRP box profiles having different cross-sections and dimensions. Behavior of the produced hybrid members was investigated under bending and compression tests. Hollow GFRPxx profiles, polymer-filled hybrid members, and nominative polymeric concrete specimens were tested as well. The behavior of the specimens under pressure and bending tests, and their load bearing capacities, deformations and changes in toughness were observed. According to the test results; It was deduced that hybrid design has many advantages over its component materials as well as superior physical and mechanical properties.

  • The production of disulfide bond-containing recombinant proteins in Escherichia coli has traditionally been done by either refolding from inclusion bodies or by targeting the protein to the periplasm. However, both approaches have limitations. Two broad strategies were developed to allow the production of proteins with disulfide bonds in the cytoplasm of E. coli: i) engineered strains with deletions in the disulfide reduction pathways, e.g. SHuffle, and ii) the co-expression of oxidative folding catalysts, e.g. CyDisCo. However, to our knowledge, the relative effectiveness of these strategies has not been properly evaluated. Here, we systematically compare the purified yields of 14 different proteins of interest (POI) that contain disulfide bonds in their native state when expressed in both systems. We also compared the effects of different background strains, commonly used promoters, and two media types: defined and rich autoinduction. In rich autoinduction media, POI which can be produced in a soluble (non-native) state without a system for disulfide bond formation were produced in higher purified yields from SHuffle, whereas all other proteins were produced in higher purified yields using CyDisCo. In chemically defined media, purified yields were at least 10x higher in all cases using CyDisCo. In addition, the quality of the three POI tested was superior when produced using CyDisCo.

  • By using guinea pig lung mast cells, this study aimed to examine the effects of Aloe component(NY945) on the mediator releases caused by mast cell activation, and also aimed to assess the effects of NY945 on the mechanism of mediator releases in the mast cell activation. We partially purified mast cells from guinea pig lung tissues by using the enzyme digestion, the rough and the discontinuous density percoll gradient method. Mast cells were sensitized with $IgG_1$ (anti-OA) and challenged with ovalbumin. Histamine was assayed by fluorometric analyzer, leukotrienes by radioimmunoassay The phospholipase D activity was assessed more directly by the production of labeled phosphatidylethanol or phosphatidylbutanol which was produced by phospholipase D-mediated transphosphatidylation in the presence of ethanol or butanol. The amount of mass 1,2-diacylglycerol was measured by the [$^3H$]1,2-diacylgycerol produced when prelabeled with [$^3H$]myristic acid. In the mast cells prelabeled with L-[$^3H$]methyl methionine the phospholipid methylation was assessed by measuring the incorporation of the [$^3H$]methyl moiety into phospholipids. Pretreatment of NY945(10$\mu$g) significantly decreased histamine and leukotrienes releases during mast cell activation. The decrease of histamine release was stronger than that of leukotrienes during mast cell activation. The phospholipase D activity increased by the mast cell activation was decreased by the dose-dependent manner in the pretreatment of NY945. The amount of mass 1,2-diacylglycerol produced by activation of mast cells were decreased in the pretreatment of NY945. NY945 pretreatment strongly inhibited the incorporation of the [$^3H$]methyl moiety into phospholipids. The data suggest that NY945 purified from Aloe inhibits in part an increase of 1,2-diacylglycerol which is produced by activating mast cells with antigen-antibody complexes which is mediated via phosphatidylcholine-phospholipise D and phosphatidylinositole-phospholipise C systems, and then followed by the inhibition of histamine release. Furthermore, NY945 reduces the phosphatidylcholine production by inhibiting the methyltransfsrase I and II, which decrease the conversion of phosphatidylcholine into arachidonic acid and inhibits the production of leukotrines.

  • The goal of the trial was to evaluate the effects of ractopamine (20 ppm in the ration) given pregnant sows during three different pregnancy stages (T1: 25 to 50 d; T2: 50 to 80 d; T3: 25 to 80 d of gestation, and T4: control-no ractopamine) on fetal muscle development (through counts of the number of fibers of the semitendinosus muscle), on the growth and carcass characteristics of the progeny. Forty eight weaned piglets (12 per treatment) were assessed for number of muscle fibers, while performance and carcass characteristics were evaluated on a separate 48 animals (12 per treatment) grown to 100 kg. Animals produced by sows treated from 25 to 50 d of pregnancy (T1) resulted in non-significant increase of 6.85% in the number of muscle fibers in the semitendinosus muscle when compared to animals from the control group. Performance results were significantly different (p<0.05), and animals produced by sows from the T1 group gained more weight during the growth I stage (25 to 50 kg) and during the total period (6 to 100 kg) (991 vs. 903 grams, and 844 vs. 772 grams, respectively) when compared to controls. For carcass characteristics, results showed that animals produced by the T1 group of sows were heavier at slaughter (p<0.05) when compared to the controls (T4) (100.17 vs. 93.09 kg). There was a positive correlation between number of muscle fibers and bodyweights, carcass weights, Longissimus dorsi muscle depth and dressing out (0.80, 0.86, 0.67, and 0.50, respectively). Sows treated with ractopamine between 25 to 50 d of pregnancy produced piglets that performed better and had superior carcass characteristics than those produced by untreated sows. The ractopamine used for pregnancy sows (25 to 50 d) can be indicated as a device to increase the progeny performance.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relative distances among English front vowels in a message produced by 47 Korean and American speakers in order to better instruct pronunciation skills of English vowels for Korean English learners. A Praat script was developed to collect the first and second formant values(F1 and F2) of eight words in each sound file which was recorded from an internet speech archive. Then, the Euclidean distances were measured between the three vowel pairs: [i-ɛ], [i-ɪ], and [ɛ-æ]. The first vowel pair [i-ɛ] was set as the reference from which the relative distances of the other two vowel pairs were measured in percent in order to compare the vowel sounds among speakers of different vocal tract lengths. Results show that F1 values of the front vowels produced by the Korean and American speakers increased from the high front vowel to the low front vowel wih differences among the groups. The Korean speakers generally produced the front vowels with smaller jaw openings than the American speakers did. Secondly, the relative distance of the high front vowel pair [i-ɪ] showed a significant difference between the Korean and American speakers while that of the low front vowel pair [ɛ-æ] showed a non-significant difference. Finally, the Korean speakers in the higher proficiency level produced front vowels with higher F1 values than those in the lower proficiency level. The author concluded that Korean speakers should produce the front high vowels distinctively by securing sufficient relative distance of the formant values. Further studies would be desirable to examine how strong the Korean speakers' English proficiency correlate with the relative distance of target words of comparable productions.

  • Eggs obtained from 46 and 42 weeks old meat (Hybro) and layer (Leghorn) breeders flocks, respectively were used to examine the effects of genetic type of birds and egg size (small, medium and large) on variables of eggshell characteristics and hatchability traits. The variables measured were egg weight (EW), egg surface area (ESA) and eggshell characteristics (shell conductance (EC), per cent shell (PS), shell thickness (ST), shell volume (SV), shell density (SD) and hatchability traits (per cent hatchability (HP), early dead embryos (ED), late dead embryos (LD), pips with live embryos (PL) and pips with dead embryos (PD)). Genetic type of bird influenced all egg characteristics and HP of eggs. Eggs produced by the small Leghorn bird had lower EW, ESA, EC, ST, SV and HP than those produced by the heavy Hybro bird. The reduction of HP was associated with an increase in the percentage of ED and PL. Egg size influenced all variables measured except ST. Small size eggs had lower EW, ESA and EC and higher PS and SD than those of large eggs. Medium size eggs produced a higher HP when compared with that of large size eggs. The reduction of HP in large eggs was associated with higher percentage of ED, LD and PL. There were significant interactions between the genetic group of birds and egg size on LD and HP. Large egg size of Hybro birds had higher LD and lower HP than those of small size eggs produced by the same flock. However, There was no difference in HP and LD among the different egg sizes produced by Leghorn birds. It was concluded that genetic make up of birds and egg size influence eggshell characteristics and HP. The type of bird (heavy or small) influences the optimum egg size for successful hatching. Attention should be given to the size and eggshell characteristics of eggs of breeders' flocks for achieving maximum HP.

  • In our previous studies, Bacillus megaterium KU143, Microbacterium testaceum KU313, and Pseudomonas protegens AS15 have been shown to be antagonistic to Aspergillus flavus in stored rice grains. In this study, the biocontrol activities of these strains were evaluated against Aspergillus candidus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Penicillium fellutanum, and Penicillium islandicum, which are predominant in stored rice grains. In vitro and in vivo antifungal activities of the bacterial strains were evaluated against the fungi on media and rice grains, respectively. The antifungal activities of the volatiles produced by the strains against fungal development and population were also tested using I-plates. In in vitro tests, the strains produced secondary metabolites capable of reducing conidial germination, germ-tube elongation, and mycelial growth of all the tested fungi. In in vivo tests, the strains significantly inhibited the fungal growth in rice grains. Additionally, in I-plate tests, strains KU143 and AS15 produced volatiles that significantly inhibited not only mycelial growth, sporulation, and conidial germination of the fungi on media but also fungal populations on rice grains. GC-MS analysis of the volatiles by strains KU143 and AS15 identified 12 and 17 compounds, respectively. Among these, the antifungal compound, 5-methyl-2-phenyl-1H-indole, was produced by strain KU143 and the antimicrobial compounds, 2-butyl 1-octanal, dimethyl disulfide, 2-isopropyl-5-methyl-1-heptanol, and 4-trifluoroacetoxyhexadecane, were produced by strain AS15. These results suggest that the tested strains producing extracellular metabolites and/or volatiles may have a broad spectrum of antifungal activities against the grain fungi. In particular, B. megaterium KU143 and P. protegens AS15 may be potential biocontrol agents against Aspergillus and Penicillium spp. during rice grain storage.
