  • A PHE (Process Heat Exchanger) in a nuclear hydrogen system is a key component required to transfer heat energy of $950^{\circ}C$ generated in a VHTR (Very High Temperature Reactor) to a chemical reaction that yields a large quantity of hydrogen. Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute has established a small-scale gas loop for the performance test on VHTR components and recently has manufactured a medium-scale PHE prototype made of Hastelloy-X. A performance test on the PHE prototype is scheduled in the gas loop. In this study, high-temperature structural analysis modeling, and macroscopic thermal and structural analysis of the medium-scale PHE prototype by imposing the established displacement boundary constraints in the previous research were carried out under the gas loop test condition. The results obtained in this study will be compared with performance test results.

  • Various process piping usually carries out high flammable and explosible gas under high pressure and high temperature. Due to frequent change of design and structure it becomes more complicated and compactly located. The safety management level is relatively low since it is considered as simply designed component. In this study a safety assessment procedure is proposed for complicated piping system around a mixing drum in which natural gas and by-product gases were mixed. According to ASME code, pipe stress analysis was conducted for determining design margin at some key locations of the piping. These high stress locations can be used as major inspection points for managing the pipe integrity. Sensitivity analysis with outside temperature of the pipe and support constraint condition. Possible effect of hydroen gas to the pipe steel during the previous use of the by-product gas was also discussed.

  • This study presents the development of an integrated oil purification system consisting of moisture removal, oil flushing, and oil filtering devices. In this system, the oil flushing device is combined with a micro-bubble generator. Oil purification is necessary for ensuring the high performance of the lubricant through the efficient removal of contaminants and thus enables good maintenance of mechanical systems. The developed purification system removes moisture, varnish, and solid particles. Moreover, during oil purification, the oil flushing device separates foreign materials and contaminants remaining in the lubricating oil piping or mechanical systems. The microbubble generator, which is combined with the oil flushing device, can separate harmful contaminants, such as sludge, wear particles, and rust, from piping or lubrication systems through the cavitation effect. Moisture is removed using a double high-vacuum chamber, while sludge and varnish are removed via electro-absorption using a high-voltage generator. Additionally, the total maintenance cost of the system is reduced through the use of domestically fabricated cartridge filters composed of glass fiber and cellulose. The heater, which maintains the temperature of the lubricant at 60℃, can process 41,000 L of lubricant simultaneously. Multiple tests confirmed that the proposed integrated purification system exhibits good performance in oil flushing and removal of water and varnish.

  • In the building process of FPSOs(floating production, storage and offloading units) is the increasing demand of high performance piping joints that can be installed on its turret system and maintain smooth and long-term flow of ultra-high pressure crude oil, being subjected to external excitations such as wind and wave on the sea. Following such a trend, in this paper, a new-type piping joint of four effective degrees of freedom has been designed, and its dynamic characteristics predicted through mathematical modeling and computer simulations. Moreover, via an example it was shown how the yaw motion in particular can be independently controlled for future durability test despite strong kinetic couplings.

  • This study describes the development of a 1-inch cryogenic glove valve for an LNG pumping system and localization development achieved through the performance test. The cryogenic valve used in the LNG pumping system plays an important role in maintaining a flow rate by LNG transportation. This trial manufactured goods, which was achieved through reverse engineering and developing the assembly process. The result of the leak test satisfied the internal pressure condition using the 78-bar normal temperature test and maintained the anti-leakage condition. Also, the result of the cryogenic leak test (BS 6364: low temperature test procedure) maintained anti-leakage at -196 and 52 bar, which satisfied the test standards.

  • As in the other industrial processes, a nuclear power plant involves a steam relieving process through which condensable steam is discharged and condensed in a subcooled pool. An analysis of steam discharge transients was carried out using the method of characteristics to determine the flow characteristics and dynamic loads of piping that are used for structural design of the piping and its supports. The analysis included not only the steam flow rate but also the flow rates of the air and water which originally exist in the pipe. The analytical model was developed for a uniform pipe with friction through which the flow was discharged into a suppression pool. Including the combinations of system elements such as reservoir, valve and branching pipe lines. The piping flow characteristics and dynamic loads were calculated by varying system pressure, pipe length, and submergence depth. It was found that the dynamic load, water clearing time and water clearing velocity at the water/air interface were dependent not only on the system pressure and temperature but also on the pipe length and submergence depth.

  • In around 2000, the U.S. NPPs have developed the various advanced engineering processes based on the INPO AP-913(Equipment Reliability Process Description) and showed the high performance in availability. With these benchmarking cases, the Korean NPPs have introduced the advanced engineering technology since 2005. The first step of the advanced engineering is to analyze and determine component importance for all components of a plant. This process is called Functional Importance Determination(FID). These results are basically utilized to determine the priority with limited resources in various areas. However, because the consistency of FID results is insufficient despite applying the same criteria in the existing operating NPPs, the degree of application is low. Therefore, this paper presents the improved methodology for FID interfacing system functions of Maintenance Rule Program and results of Single Point Vulnerability(SPV). This improved methodology is expected to contribute to enhance the reliability of FID data.

  • According to KGS FS551, the safety of an exposure pipe system should be calculated quantitatively by calculating the stress of exposed piping for thermal expansion. However, many pipe system designs and installation sites are not equipped for this. Therefore, KGS FS551 suggested the use of safe gas by presenting the recommended pipe shape. The shapes of various pipe systems have been derived. However, the recommended shape could not be an absolute evaluation standard. Furthermore, the ongoing debate over standards between a plumbing installer and an inspector is an obstacle to the efficient and safe use of gas. Therefore, the correct pipe system evaluation method is examined in this study, and the safety of the existing exposed pipe system is verified.

  • Nuclear hydrogen production using high temperature heat of a very high temperature reactor(VHTR) is one of the most attractive ways of mass hydrogen production without greenhouse gas emission. In many countries, sulfur-iodine(S-I) thermochemical process and high temperature steam electrolysis(HTSE) process are being investigated. In such processes, corrosion behavior of Intermediate heat exchanger materials are the most critical issues. Especially in a HTSE system, several heat exchangers will be facing hot steam conditions. In this paper, the status of high temperature corrosion researches in hot steam and supercritical water conditions are reviewed in view of the implication to HTSE conditions. Based on the review, test condition and plan of the hot steam corrosion of the candidate materials are formulated and described in some details along with the schematics of the test set-up. The test results and subsequent evaluation will be used in development of a interface system between the HTSE hydrogen production system and the VHTR.
