  • This study is aimed to specify the meaning of the body and the design trends in contemporary architecture. Architecture is based on the human life of various meaning, events, experiences, images, senses and interactions through the body. Thoughts, behaviors, and senses of human are interrelated in architectural experiences. Individuals experience the built environments and space, not through the ideas but through the senses and movements of the body. So, bodies make the real space of architecture. Contemporary architecture accepts the theory of phenomenology and places on the thoughts of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger, Nroberg Schulz and so on. Such researches effect on the architectural trends to make design processes works on the programs in views of the expansion and the structuralization of human body. In detail, the aim of this study is to analyse the architecture as the fields of the subject with body as the center, design processes and principles changed form metaphysical thought to phenomenological discourse, and the design trends in contemporary architecture at last. In process of movements, vision centered architecture moves into the bodily experienced architecture and changed the trends from absolute form design to design of relative processes. In conclusion, architectural formation-dissolution-reconstitution of body creates the architectural thoughts such as human proportions, perspective space, ergonomics, modular, organic architecture, experience space, synesthesia, event architecture, fashion-invoked architecture, interactive surfaces, metamorphosis, and others.

  • The cutaneous xanthophore differentiation from larvae to adult in Bombina orientalis-the Korean fire bellied toad-is studied with light and electron microscopes. General structure of adult xanthophore which is composed of many pterinosomes and a small quantity of carotenoid vesicles is forming chromatophore complex with other dermal pigment cells. And the cytoplasmic process of xanthophore is distributed just beneath the basement membrane. The first differentiated xanthophore is originated from both rER rich cells and Golgi complex rich cells before and after the feeding larval stage. Formation of the pigment granule is proceeded gradually along the sequental metamorphic stages. After the metamorphosis, rapid multiplication of pterinosome is observed and enlargement of carotenoid vesicle is appeared after hybernation. These pigment granules are seen several structures by the differentiated level.

  • The effects of the non-steroidal ecdysteroid agonist tebufenozide on larvae of C. faviplumus and C. riparius were tested in the laboratory. In the most treatments it reached a statistically significant difference from the control condition. As the concentration of tebufenozide was increased, a relatively larger proportion of the observed mortality was associated with the metamorphosis and molting process. Also, the larval mortality of the first larvae was higher than the fourth-instar larvae in C. riparius. In terms of development, the effects of tebufenozide were delayed growth stage in relatively lower concentration such as 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L treatments. Based on the mortality, the susceptibility followed the first-instar C. riparius > the fourth-instar C. flaviplumus > the fourth-instal C. riparius. The morphological effects showed that the first and second segments of body of exposed larvae with tebufenozide expanded slowly and not made a complete cephalothorax of pupae during long times or days. And the head capsule slipped down and forward, revealing a fragile and non-pigmented, unsclerotized new head capsule. There was obvious significant difference in the male/female ratio in contaminated fourth larvae of C. riparius. Also, due to the different emergence periods of male/female in low insecticide concentrations, mating chances or opportunities of insects should be decreased. Accordingly, ecological strategies for keeping of sustainable populations should be disrupted.

  • The scuttle fly is a fly species in the Phoridae family. Scuttle fly which moves abruptly after standing for a while and stop suddenly to rush off again. These characteristic behaviors of the scuttle fly seem to be related to muscular and nervous system or neurotransmitters. Thus, we focused at the neurotransmitter, corazonin (Crz) that is known to be related to resistance to stress and investigated the developmental process of the neurons in the scuttle fly. In a previous studies, we found that there are three groups of corazoninergic neurons in the larval CNS of the scuttle. Larva has 3 pairs of Crz neurons at the dorsolateral area of the brain, 1 pair at the dorsomedial brain and 8 pairs at the ventral nerve cord. In this studies, among these neurons, 1 pair of dorsomedial brain and 8 pairs of ventral nerve cord disappear in early pupal stage after metamorphosis. Only the 3 pairs of dorsolateral brain persist expression of Crz gene through all the period of pupa stage. This group of neurons converge gradually to frontal center of the brain and situated at the medial region. These pairs of corazoninergic neurons keep their number and location in adult stage. In the future, we expect further studies on the histological characteristics of corazonin-expressing cells and the expression of corazonin gene.

  • The olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) is one of the most widely cultured flatfish in Korea and Japan. During development, in a process known as metamorphosis, this fish reorients itself to lie on one side, the body flattens, and the eye migrates to the other side of the body. However, few studies have focused on molecule regulation mechanism of eye development in olive flounder. To reveal the molecular mechanism of eye development, we performed the studies on identification of genes expressed in the eye of olive flounder using EST and RT-PCR strategy. A total of 270 ESTs were sequenced, and 178 (65.9%) clones were identified as known genes and 92 (34.1%) as unknown genes. Among the 178 EST clones, 29 (16.3%) clones were representing 9 unique genes identified as homologous to the previously reported olive flounder ESTs, 131 (73.6%) clones representing 107 unique genes were identified as orthologs of known genes from other organisms. We also identified a kind of eye development associated proteins, indicating EST as a powerful method for identifying eye development-related genes of fish as well as identifying novel genes. Further functional studies on these genes will provide more information on molecule regulation mechanism of eye development in olive flounder.

  • Changes in the protein concentration in the hemolymph and the oxidation of respiratory substrates at various developmental stages in cabbage worm, Pieris rapae Linne were measured using Biuret method and Warburg manometric method, respectively. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The hemolymph protein contentration decreased gradually until the six-day pupa and increased thereafter. In the fifth larval instar the concentration reached a maximum and was about two times the value for the six-day pupa. 2. Endogenous respiration was very high at the prepupal stage, decreasing at two-day pupa, followed by an increase at the late pupal stage. 3. Glucose showed the marked activity throughout the whole stages, and had the striking influence on both the prepupal and adult stages. 4. The changes in protein concentration and the rate of oxygen consumption exhibited a general pattern of U-shaped curve through the process of life cycle according to histogenesis of the adult organ and histolysis of the larval organ.

  • Transferrin is a molecule carrying iron to store and maintain for iron homeostasis of living organisms. In this study, we have purified transferrin, as an iron-binding protein, from the last larval haemolymph of Papilio xuthus by KBr density gradient ultracentrifugation and gel filtration (superose 6 HR) using fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) and transferrin containing iron was identified by Ferene S staining. The purified haemolymph transferrin was shown to have molecular mass of 78 and 80 kDa and amino acid composition of transferrin was rich in aspartic acid, valine, leucine and glutamic acid. With immuno-diffusion assay, we confirmed the existence of the transferrin in the haemo-lymph and fat body by detection of visible and clear positive reaction. From the quantitative comparison by rocket immuno-electrophoresis process, the amount of transferrin were increased in the haemolymph of 3 days after pupation and the whole 5 days after pupation. Here, with biochemical and immunohistochemical analysis, we speculate the relationship of transferrin between the physical characteristics and distribution during metamorphosis of P. xuthus.

  • Design Problems are often both multidimensional and highly interactive. Very rarely does any part of a designed thing serve only one purpose. The activity of designing is thus a goal-directed activity and normally a goal-directed problem-solving activity. This means, problem solving is finding a way to get from some initial situation to a desired goal. Designers are transforming agents within a society whose goals are to improve the human condition through physical metamorphosis. Many theorist have agreed that designing involves problem solving or decision making. Accordingly evaluation plays an essential role in design activity. The evaluation factors include all attributes that have levels specified by quantitative and qualitative objectives Alternatives in multi-objective decision prOblems generally possess numerous attributes by which they can be described and compared. The evaluation factors include all attributes that have levels specified by quantitative and qualitative objectives. However since qualitative factors are difficult to quantify as numeral estimates, these factors have tended to be ignored without regard for their importance to human content. We adapted the Accumulative Evaluation Model as an evaluation algorithm for IDES. Industrial Design Evaluation System (IDES) consists of 3 major modules ( 1 Design Element, 2.Matrix, 3.Evaluation). It is intended to be an aid for design evaluation. The luther thinks IDES is a new design evaluation approach which could provide effective rating of design values to make value judgements. It is an attempt to provide industrial designers with access to design evaluation. The author's aim is to produce an Object-Oriented Evaluation System which can guide the designers and decision makers under complex design projects. It uses\ulcorner an Object-Oriented Programming for this prototype, Because of managing complexity (Flexibility and Reusability) and improving productivity(Extensibility & Maintainability and Programming by User) in software development process. The author has chose the C++ because it is a hybrid, rather than pure Object-Oriented Language.

  • This study examines the conceptual characteristics of fantasy movies. It also studies the process of socio-cultural changes of the mythical images such as heroes, goddesses and the devil that have often become the centre of fantasy movie characters. This study further examines the features of each character that correspond to specific mythical images. The purpose of this research is to suggest the conceptual and aesthetic characteristics of fantasy reflected in the characters and the costumes of fantasy movies, which were released since the year 2000. The followings are the results of the research: The conceptual characteristics of fantasy reflected in the characters and the costumes of fantasy movies are summarized as representation of reality, allegory and symbols, horror, desire, deconstruction and metamorphosis, otherness and counter-cultural sentiments. The aesthetic characteristics of the costumes of fantasy movies are defined as typicality and symbolism, grotesqueness, sensuality, hybridization, and otherness. These characteristics are very interconnected. The costumes of heroic characters appearing in fantasy movies show strong side of standard while the costumes of the evil characters revealed the limit of dualistic point of worldview centered on West. Heroic characters show realistic and human side that reflects the ethos of the time. Negative characters such as the devil or witches, which were created in human imagination and emotion, become the dynamic force of fantasy movies through their deviant actions. Their clothes, with variety and hybridization, become the source of creativity expected in present society.

  • Objectives : This paper examined the Buddhist contents within the text, Bencaoshengyabanji(本草乘雅半偈). Methods : Medicinals that were searched through Buddhist vocabulary were examined. Results & Conclusions : Medicinals that quoted the Lengyanjing were related to the Water-Fire interaction, food and medicine, and karma, while those that quoted the Shidian were related to 無上道, 去惡殺蟲, 樞機滑利, and 生生之氣. Those related to the Great Earth of the Four Elements corrected the body's form based on Metal Qi, while those related to the Great Water were connected to the circulation of water dampness. Those related to the Great Fire were deeply related to Yang Qi, and those related to the Great Wind were connected to Wind control. Of the Four Origins, medicinals that were viviparous lowered Qi, while those that were oviparous were related to communicating Shen, treating diseases of the Conception Vessel, and the closing and opening of day and night. Medicinals originating from dampness were related to urination and fluid management, while those of metamorphosis were related to the process of Qi. Those related to emptiness were related to the communication of the Qi system, while those related to 六根六塵 were connected to calming the Shen and strengthening the will, and smoothing the nine orifices. Medicinals related to 圓通 were used for improving eyesight and hearing and controlling the closing and opening. Lu Zhi-yi's analysis of medicinals through the Lengyanjing is original in that it suggested a new perspective other than previous theories on pharmacology which were based on the Yin-Yang and Five Phases and Rising/Lowering/Floating/Sinking theories, but also pedantic and exaggerated. The Bencaoshengyabanji is a unique text on medicinals which analyzed each medicinal under Buddhist influence. However, it also followed the contexts of other previous texts on medicinals, and influenced Zou shu.
