  • In this paper, a new design procedure is proposed for constructing the observer for linear discrete-time systems with unknown inputs. An existence condition for the suggested observer is also presented. The observer design procedure does not use any transformation technique, augmentation technique and has a clear physical meaning, so it is easy to understand and to design the observer. It directly estimates the unknown inputs from that outputs only, so it is different from other pre-works in which the reconstruction of the unknown inputs arc performed with the additional output derivatives.

  • In an earlier paper ('Scheduling Jobs on a Number of Identical Machines' by Elmaghraby and Park, March 1974, AIIE Transactions) a branch-and-bound algorithm was developed for the sequencing problem when all jobs are available to process at time zero and are independet (i.e., there are not a priori precedence relationships among jobs.). However, the amount of computation required by the algorithm was not considered to be short if more than 50 jobs were processed. As an effort to improve the algorithm, the present paper modifies the implicit enumeration procedure in the algorithm so that moderately large problems can be treated with what appears to be a short computational time. Mainly this paper is concerned with improving the lower bound in the implicit enumeration procedure. The computational experiences with this new branch-and-bound algorithm are given.

  • In this paper, a new group sampling plan for the lot acceptance is proposed for the time truncated life test, which can be utilized when multi-item testers are implemented. The design parameters are found using the two-point approach such that the producer's and consumer's risks are satisfied simultaneously at the acceptable reliability level and the lot tolerance reliability level, respectively. The case of Weibull distribution is described to illustrate the procedure that can be used when the quality level is expressed by a multiple of the specified life. The advantage of the proposed plan is demonstrated by comparing with the existing plan in terms of the sample size required. The tables are constructed and some examples are given to illustrate the procedure developed here.

  • Accelerated life test models and procedure are developed to assess the reliability of Door switch. The main function of door switch is to operate bulb lamp and fan motor. The accelerated life test method and test equipments are developed using the relationship between stresses and life characteristics of the products. Using the developed accelerated life test method, the parameters of the ALT model and life time distribution are estimated and the reliability of the Door S/W at use condition if assessed. The proposed accelerated life test method and procedure may be extended and applied to testing similar kinds of products to reduce test time and costs of the tests remarkably.

  • It is announced a new procedure for the real-time overall hull response monitoring system depends on inclinometer sensor data. The procedure requires a few inclinometer sensors' data, located on the deck. Sensor data is used to obtain curvature values; and curvature values are used to find out displacements or relevant moment values according to pre-calculated moment-curvature diagrams. Numerical studies are demonstrated with reasonable accuracy for the pre-ultimate and the post-ultimate nonlinear behaviors. Elastic, inelastic, and post-collapse structural bending moment capacity determination of the hull has been presented. The proposed inverse engineering technique will be able to see the response of the hull in real-time with high accuracy to manage the course and speed when cruising or control the loading and the unloading process at the port.

  • Recurrent pectus excavatum (PE) after a Ravitch operation is not uncommon. Extensive costal cartilage resection from the previous Ravitch procedure can lead to an irregular, unstable chest wall depressions with a varying degree of deformity. The optimal approach to cover the chest wall defect and remodel the deformity, remains unknown. We report the case of a 27-year-old woman seeking surgery for the third time for recurrent PE. The patient presented with 2-time recurrent pectus excavatum following a failed Ravitch procedure and subsequent pectus bar repair. The entire chest wall reconstruction and remodeling entailed covering the chest wall defect with 2 titanium plates across both sides of the rib cage, and lifting and fixing the depressed chest wall with 2 parallel pectus bars.

  • With the aging of buildings, the number and importance of regular inspections of buildings are increasing. The current safety inspection goes through a procedure in which a skilled technician visits an old building, visually checks it, takes a photo, and finally organizes and judges it at the office. For this, field personnel and analysis and review personnel are required. Since the inspection procedure includes taking pictures, a huge amount of data has been accumulated from the time digital photos were used to the present. When a model that can check cracks outside a building is developed using these data, manpower and time required can be greatly reduced. Therefore, this study aims to create a model for classifying cracks that occur outside the building through the artificial intelligence method. The created model can be used as a basic model for determining cracks only by external photography in the future, and furthermore, it can be used as basic data for calculating the size and width of cracks.

  • This paper presents a numerical procedure for solving initial-value problems using the special functions which belong to a class of Rvachev's basis functions $R_{bf}$ based on algebraic and trigonometric polynomials. Because of infinite derivability of these functions, derivatives of all orders, required by differential equation of the problem and initial conditions, are used directly in the numerical procedure. The accuracy and stability of the proposed numerical procedure are proved on an example of a single degree of freedom system. Critical time step was also determined. An algorithm for solving multiple degree of freedom systems by the collocation method was developed. Numerical results obtained by $R_{bf}$ functions are compared with exact solutions and results obtained by the most commonly used numerical procedures for solving initial-value problems.

  • This paper presents a design procedure of an integrated inductor with a magnetic core for power converters. This procedure considerably reduces design time and effort. The proposed design procedure is verified by the development of an inductor model dedicated to the monolithic integration of DC-DC converters for portable applications. The numerical simulation based on the FEM (finite elements method) shows that 3D modeling of the integrated inductor allows better estimation of the electrical parameters of the desired inductor. The optimization of the electrical parameter values is based on the numerical analysis of the influence of the geometric parameters on the electrical characteristics of the inductor. Using the VHDL-AMS language, implementation of the integrated inductor in a micro Buck converter demonstrate that simulation results present a very promising approach for the monolithic integration of DC-DC converters.

  • The present work is concerned with the development of a procedure for adaptive computations of shear localization problems. The maximum jump of equivalent strain rates across element boundaries is proposed as a simple error indicator based on interpolation errors, and successfully implemented in the adaptive mesh refinement scheme. The time step is controlled by using a parameter related to the Lipschitz constant, and state variables in target elements for refinements are transferred by $L_2$-projection. Consistent tangent moduli with a proper updating scheme for state variables are used to improve the numerical stability in the formation of shear bands. It is observed that the present adaptive mesh refinement procedure shows an excellent performance in the simulation of shear localization problems.
