This study explores the effects of exports on the innovation of Korean firms listed on two Korean stock markets, the Korean Stock Exchange and the Korean Securities Dealers Quotations, between 1999 and 2016. By matching exporting firms to non-exporting ones with propensity score matching, this study accounts for a problem from sample selection bias that may arise from differences in firm-characteristics between the two groups. From the study results, first, both export participation and export volume significantly increase subsequent innovation performance, as measured by the number of patent applications. This result seems to support the "learning by exporting" hypothesis for Korean listed firms. Second, both export participation and export volume narrow innovation scope, proxied as the number of unique International Patent Classification (IPC) codes of the patent applied, the degree to which patents are concentrated in a particular class, and the degree of proximity in the patents. The findings of innovation scope suggest a possible explanation that the learning effect appears in familiar technology fields that firms have previously held, rather than in unfamiliar ones. Third, these results are robust using alternative proxies in the innovation scope, Tobit regressions to consider the non-trivial portion of sample firms with patent applications equal to zeros, and generalized method of moments (GMM) to control for the persistence of innovation measures hearing over years. Finally, the two main results are more pronounced in large firms than in small and medium-sized ones. As for Chaebol firms, however, these results do not appear.
An H$_{\infty}$ control system design for a magnetic levitation system is presented. In the control system design, we consider the influence of both disturbances and uncertainties in the model. The main disturbances stem from the position sensors. The uncertainties are divided into electromagnetic and mechanical ones: the former are due to the gain change in the current amplifier, the influence of leakage flux and modelling error in the magnetic circuit and the latter are due to the changes of the mass and the moments of inertia of the vehicle. Therefore, the designed controller is indispensable to guarantee the robustness of this system for both stability and performance. The controller design is based on the standard H$_{\infty}$ optimal control problem. As the novel features in this paper :(1) there are two poles on j.omega.-axis in the control model;(2) an integrator is included in the controller so that equivalently there are three poles on j.omega.-axis in the model. Finally, several experiments and simulations are carried out to verify the high performance and robustness of the designed control system.m.

The scatting problem by E-polarized plane wave with obique incidence on a tapered resistive strip grating with zero resistivity(perfectly conducting) at strip-edges is analyzed by the method of moments in the spectral domain. Then the induced surface current density on the strip is expanded in a series of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. The expasion coefficients are calculated numerically in the spectral domain, the numerical results of the geometric-optical reflection coefficient for the tapered resistivity in this paper are compared with those for the existing uniform resistivity. And the position of sharp variation points in the magnitude of the geometric-optical reflection coefficient can be moved by varying the incident angle and the strip spacing, It is found out that these sparp variation points are due to the transition of higher mode between the propagation mode and the evanescent mode.

The course stability performance for tankers is evaluated by computational fluid dynamics. In the present work, a Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) code is applied to a maneuvering problem covering the pure drift and yaw motions. The purposes of this study are to evaluate the hydrodynamic force in the bare hull (AFRAMAX) in pure drift and yaw motion and to provide information about the trends in the forces and moments when the rudder angles are varied. The flow simulation is performed by FLUENT. The CFD code is examined to find the optimistic computational condition such as size of grid, turbulence model and initial condition. The hydrodynamic derivatives in drift and pure yaw motion are estimated by the numerical simulation, and then the stability levers are calculated. It is confirmed that the computations show the superiority and inferiority of course stability performance according to the hull forms. Finally, the CFD code is applied to the estimation of the rudder forces when the rudder angles are varied. The propeller effect expressed by the body force distribution is also included.

In this paper, modified square loop frequency selective surface for dualband communication antenna systems is proposed, and the scattering characteristics is discussed. The analysis for the problem of scattering by periodic structures with a dielectric slab is formulated using the spectral-domain immittance approach and Floquet's theorem. The method of moments which uses rooftop subdomain basis function is employed to solve the equations. Numerical results include the comparison between the transmission characteristic of general square loop and that of modified square loop. Also, the transmission characteristics of modified square loop for arbitrary incident angle and polarization is presented. To verify analysis results, modified square loop frequency selective surface was fabricated and the calculated results were compared with the measured results. The measured results showed good agreement with the calculated results.

Supercavitation is a modern technique which can be used to surround an underwater vehicle with a bubble in order to reduce the resistance of the vehicle. When the vehicle is at low speed in the deep sea, the cavitation number is relatively big and it is difficult to generate a cavity large enough to envelope the vehicle. In this condition, the artificial cavity, called ventilated cavity, can be used to solve this problem by supplying gas into the cavity and can maintain supercavitating condition. In this paper, a relationship between the ventilation gas supply rate and the cavity shape is determined. Based on the relationship a ventilation rate control is developed to maintain the supercavitating state. The performance of the ventilation control is verified with a depth change control. In addition, dynamics modeling for the supercavitating vehicle is performed by defining forces and moments acting on the vehicle body in contact with water. Simulation results show that the ventilation control can maintain the supercavity of an underwater vehicle at low speed in the deep sea.
In the content-based image search properties, form information is simple because only the contours of objects are available, and although it can effectively extract the characteristics of the objects, it is sensitive to external noise. The radial distortion, one of these noises, is most prominent in the eyewear and, due to the structural characteristics of the imaging equipment, radiative distortion occurs in almost all imaging equipment. It is very important to determine the similarity of the objects in the images in which these distortions occurred to the actual objects. In order to improve this problem, we propose a strong image search technique for formative noise and radiative distortion using regularization phase angles and moments. Through simulation using Wang DB, the proposed algorithm proved excellent performance for radiation distortion that occurs in general. In addition, a system optimized for database can be implemented by making appropriate changes to the threshold values, enabling image retrieval with the desired level of confidence in various systems. The algorithm proposed in this paper is expected to be utilized as an optimal imaging system by extracting morphological form information of multimedia data.
In slender sections there is a substantial post-buckling strength provided after the formation of local buckling waves. These waves happened due to normal stresses or shear stresses or both. In this study, a numerical investigation of the behavior of slender I-section beams in combined pure bending and shear has been described. The studied cases were assumed to be prevented from lateral torsional buckling. To achieve this aim, a finite element model that simulates the geometric and material nonlinear nature of the problem has been developed. Moreover, the initial geometric imperfections were included in the model. Different flange and web width-thickness ratios as well as web panel aspect ratios have been considered to draw complete set of interaction diagrams. Results reflect the interaction behavior between flange and web in resisting the combined action of moments and shear. In addition, the web panel aspect ratio will not significantly affect the combined ultimate shear-bending strength as well as the post local buckling strength gained by the section. Results are compared with that predicted by both the Eurocode 3 and the American Iron and Steel specifications, AISI-2001. Finally, an empirical interaction equation has been proposed.
This study explores the relationship between outward foreign direct investment (FDI) and innovation in 61 industries of Korea between 1999 and 2016. In order to mitigate the endogeneity problem due to potential reverse causality between FDI and innovation, we use the GMM (generalized method of moments). Our results are as follows. First, FDI has a positive effect on innovation. A possible explanation is that through FDI, multinational companies may assimilate host countries' technologies and knowledge by learning, and then recreating new technologies. Furthermore, this positive effect appears greater, as industrial competition becomes fiercer. This result provides empirical evidence that by recreating technology and knowledge learned through FDI with their own intangible assets, such as patents, they may gain a competitive edge over competitors. Second, this study confirms the greater positive effects of FDI in developed countries, as well as countries with higher technology levels. Finally, strategic asset seeking FDI has the greatest positive impact on innovation in Korean industries. In summary, our findings provide empirical evidence that Korean multinationals can learn technology and knowledge of host countries through FDI to secure a competitive edge in the Korean market.

The reinforced concrete flat plate system provides architectural flexibility, clear space, reduced building height, simple formwork, which consequently enhance constructibility. One of the serious problem in the flat plate system is brittle punching shear failure due to transfer of shear force and unbalanced moments in column-slab connection. Since the use of high strength concrete recently has become in practice for reinforced concrete structures, it is highly desired to establish the structural design method for flat plate construction using high strength concrete. In this paper, interior column-slab connection constructed with high strength concrete were tested under lateral and gravity loads to evaluate their strength and behavior. The test parameters were slab reinforcement ratio and the gravity load levels.
