  • Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the effects of overestimation of their own body shape on weight control behaviors, mental condition, physical activity, dietary behavior, health-related quality of life, and nutritional status among young Korean females. Methods: A total of 1,514 women aged 20-39 years who are not pregnant and lactating among those who participated in the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010~2011), were analyzed and grouped into underestimation (n=120), normal estimation (NE, n=840), and overestimation (OE, n=554), based on their body perception compared to actual percent ideal body weights. Variables were compared between OE group and NE group. Results: The subjects in OE group were significantly younger (29.5 vs. 30.5 years, respectively p < 0.05) and had lower body mass index (20.9 vs. 22.2 respectively, p < 0.01), health-related quality of life measured by EQ-5D (EuroQol-5 Dimension)(0.97 vs. 0.98 respectively, p < 0.05), nutrition adequacy ratio (NAR) of protein (0.91 vs. 0.93 respectively, p < 0.05), phosphorous (0.93 vs. 0.96 respectively, p < 0.05), and iron (0.70 vs. 0.75 respectively, p < 0.01), and index of nutrition quality (INQ) of iron (0.84 vs. 0.89 respectively, p < 0.05) compared to those in the NE group. The results of logistic regression showed that unmarried status (OR 1.32; 1.01~1.72) and severely underweight/underweight status (OR 1.94; 1.01~3.75)/(OR 1.81; 1.34~2.45) were significantly related to the probability of overestimation by the subjects. Significantly more women in OE group practiced fasting, skipping meals, and taking prescribed pills to lose body weights and had skipped breakfast compared to those in the NE group. Conclusions: The results of this study suggested that the Korean young women's distorted perception of own body shape may be associated with undesirable weight control behavior, low quality of life, and lower nutritional status. Therefore, nutrition education for this group should include information on correct body shape perception and its importance.

  • This research is to analyze the descriptions in the statistic chapter of the grade 7's current textbooks. The analysis is based on the distribution concepts suggested by Nam(2007). Thus we assumed that the goal of this statistic chapter is to establish concepts on the distributions and to learn ways of communication and comparison through distributional presentations. What we learned and wanted to suggest through the study is the followings. 1) Students are to learn what the distribution is and what are not. 2) Every kinds of presentational form of distributions is to given its own right to learn so that students are more encouraged to learn them and use them more adequately. 3) Density histogram is to be introduced to extend student's experiences viewing an area as 3 relative frequency, which is later to be progressed into a probability density. 4) Comparison of two distributions, especially through frequency polygons, is to be an hot issue among educational stakeholder whether to include or not. It is very important when stochastic correlations be learned, because it is nothing but a comparison between conditional distributions. 5) Statistical literacy is also an important issue for student's daily life. Especially the process ahead of the data collection must be introduced so that students acknowledge the importance of accurate and object-oriented data.

  • Currently, The autonomous vehicle market is researching and developing four-level autonomous vehicles beyond the commercialization of three-level autonomous vehicles. Because unlike the level 3, the level 4 autonomous vehicle has to deal with an emergency directly, the most important aspect of a four-level autonomous vehicle is its stability. In this paper, we propose an Optimized Vehicle Routing System (OVRS) that determines the route with the lowest probability of an accident at the destination of the vehicle rather than an immediate response in an emergency. The OVRS analyzes road and surrounding vehicle information collected by The RSU communication to predict road hazards, and sets the route for the safer and faster road. The OVRS can improve the stability of the vehicle by executing the route guidance according to the road situation through the RSU on the road like the network routing method. As a result, the RPNN of the ASICM, one of the OVRS modules, was about 17% better than the CNN and 40% better than the LSTM. However, because the study was conducted in a virtual environment using a PC, the possibility of accident of the VPDM was not actually verified. Therefore, in the future, experiments with high accuracy on VPDM due to the collection of accident data and actual roads should be conducted in real vehicles and RSUs.

  • This study examined the influence of early childhood teacher's emotional expressiveness and play teaching efficacy on children-teacher interactions. The subjects of the study were 272 early childhood teachers. The instruments were the Emotional Expressiveness Scale, Play Teaching Efficacy Scale, and Children-teacher Interaction Scale. The SPSS 22.0 program was used to analyze the results of this study, and the data were analyzed through frequency and percentage, Pearson's probability correlation, and multiple regression analysis. The results of this study were as follows. First, there was a positive correlation among positive emotional expressiveness, which is a subcategory of emotional expressiveness, play teaching efficacy, and children-teacher interaction of early childhood teachers. On the other hand, there was a negative correlation with negative emotional expressiveness, which is a subcategory of emotional expressiveness. Second, children-teacher interactions of early childhood teachers were influenced by their emotional expressiveness and play teaching efficacy. In conclusion, this study revealed a significant correlation between the emotional expression of early childhood teachers, play teaching efficacy, and the children-teacher interaction, and that both variables were factors influencing the children-teacher interactions.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to shed further light on the effect of modifiable health behavior risk factors on dependence in activities of daily living, defined in a multidimensional fashion. Methods: The study participants were 10,278 middle aged Americans in a longitudinal health study, the Health and Retirement Survey (HRS). A multi-stage probability sampling design incorporating the effect of population sizes (Metropolitan and non-metropolitan), ethnicity (the non- Hispanic White, the Hispanic, and the Black), and age (age 51-61) was utilized. Basic Activities of Daily Living (ADL) were measured using five activities necessary for survival (impairment in dressing, eating, bathing, sleeping, and moving across indoor spaces). Explanatory variables were four health behavior risk factors included smoking, exercise, Body Mass Index (BMI), and alcohol consumption. Results: Most participants at baseline were ADL independent (1992). 97.8% of participants were independent in all ADL's at baseline and 78.2% were married. Approximately 27.5% were current smokers at baseline, and the subjects reported moderate or heavy exercise were 74.8%. All demographic characteristics and behavioral risk factors were significantly associated with the ADL status at Wave 4 except alcohol consumption. Risk behaviors such as current smoking, sedentary life style and high BMI at Wave 1 were associated with ADL status deterioration; however, moderate alcohol consumption tended to be more related to better ADL status than abstaining at Wave 4. ADL status at Wave 1 was the strongest factor and the next was exercise and smoking affecting ADL status at Wave 4. People who were in ADL dependent at Wave 1 were 15.17 times more likely to be ADL dependent at Wave 4 than people who were in ADL independent at Wave 1. Concerning smoking cigarettes, people who kept only light exercise or sedentary life style at Wave 1 were 1.70 times more likely to be died at Wave 4 than the people who did not smoke at Wave 1. Conclusions: All demographics and health behaviors at wave 1 had consistently similar OR trends for ADL status to each other except alcohol consumption. Smoking and exercise in health behaviors, and age and gender in demographics at Wave 1 were significant factors associated with ADL group separation at Wave 4.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to identify genomic regions or genes controlling growth traits in pigs. Methods: Using a panel of 54,148 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), we performed a genome-wide Association (GWA) study in 562 pure Yorshire pigs with four growth traits: average daily gain from 30 kg to 100 kg or 115 kg, and days to 100 kg or 115 kg. Fixed and random model Circulating Probability Unification method was used to identify the associations between 54,148 SNPs and these four traits. SNP annotations were performed through the Sus scrofa data set from Ensembl. Bioinformatics analysis, including gene ontology analysis, pathway analysis and network analysis, was used to identify the candidate genes. Results: We detected 6 significant and 12 suggestive SNPs, and identified 9 candidate genes in close proximity to them (suppressor of glucose by autophagy [SOGA1], R-Spondin 2 [RSPO2], mitogen activated protein kinase kinase 6 [MAP2K6], phospholipase C beta 1 [PLCB1], rho GTPASE activating protein 24 [ARHGAP24], cytoplasmic polyadenylation element binding protein 4 [CPEB4], GLI family zinc finger 2 [GLI2], neuronal tyrosine-phosphorylated phosphoinositide-3-kinase adaptor 2 [NYAP2], and zinc finger protein multitype 2 [ZFPM2]). Gene ontology analysis and literature mining indicated that the candidate genes are involved in bone, muscle, fat, and lung development. Pathway analysis revealed that PLCB1 and MAP2K6 participate in the gonadotropin signaling pathway and suggests that these two genes contribute to growth at the onset of puberty. Conclusion: Our results provide new clues for understanding the genetic mechanisms underlying growth traits, and may help improve these traits in future breeding programs.

  • One of the reasons for low fertility rate in Korea is related to the delayed marriage among the population belong to marriage cohorts. The major goal of this study is to analyze how the economic resources such as level of education, whether employed or not, and occupation have affected one's marriage opportunity and how it is differed by gender. Meanwhile, the changes in the influence of economic resources and the changes in the marriage norms were also studied by analyzing 2% Census data in 1995, 2000 and 2005. Total number of 1.1 million men and women in their ages between 20 to 44 are included in data and binary-logistic analysis is used for statistical research. This study supports a traditional hypothesis that the influence of economic resources on probability of marriage is different by gender. More important academic contribution of this study is the quality of economic resources is becoming more important for men since Asian economic crisis and that the negative effect of it on women is declining since 2000. It is analyzed that the effect of marriage norm has recently decreased on the part of women. These findings suggest that there is a tendency of polarization of marriage market in Korea affected by economic polarization since Asian economic crisis.

  • This paper reports the results of the 2009 Internet volunteer panel version of the social survey conducted by Statistics Korea (Korea National Statistical Office). Authors identify socio-psychological characteristics of Internet survey volunteers and present quantitative evaluation of the propensity adjustment weighting method intended to remove Internet sample bias. The nine criteria used for propensity adjustment were regions, urban/rural, gender, age, education, consumer satisfaction, views on income distribution, newspaper access and Internet news access. Propensity adjustment weighting based on the logit model and rim weights were applied to the online survey of 2,903 respondents using the face-to-face area sample data of 37,049 respondents as reference. A total of 106 items were used for evaluating the propensity adjustment weighting methods. The results showed that in 80% of survey items the propensity adjustment weighting yielded better estimates compared to simple demographic weighting. This suggests that Internet surveys by volunteer panels are useful for conducting the general social study in Korea. The reference survey data for this study contains several items on social-psychological behaviors and attitudes, is large in size and obtained by probability sampling. Thus it may be utilized in propensity adjustment of other Internet surveys.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the expected earnings differentials by major of university graduates. Usually the achievement in labor market has been measured by the earnings of those being with job. But such simple comparisons of earnings might fail to bring out correct evaluation once if the probabilities of getting a job are quite different across the major of university graduates. So it is necessary to compare the expected lifetime eatings which can be computed using the earnings of those with job and the probabilities of taking a job. In this paper, we showed that the expected earings of university graduates are quite different by major and not only the difference of earnings but also the difference of job-taking probabilities are considerably contributing such differentials. Especially the expected earnings of medicine and education are considerably higher than those of other majors. These results are maintained almost identically with the change of estimation methods. But despite of these findings. it should be admitted that it was not possible to exactly measure the magnitude of differentials by major.

  • In accordance with the development plans of Jeju for international free city, Jeju new harbor will be constructed cosidering supporting Jeju city as an international tour city, safe arrival and departure at the terminal of 80.000G/T cruise ship. In this study, we used a full-mission ship handling simulator adopting 80.000G/T cruise ship manoeuvered at the planned Juju international cruise terminal. Five masters who have had a long experience of shop maneuvering ware called to carry out the simulations of which No. 1 , Np. 2, and No.4 scenario of simulation were tried twice, completed the total of 10 times and No.3 scenario of simulation once, reached at the total of 5 time. The marine traffic safety was assessed in terms of 1) the closest point of approach(CPA) to breakwater and quay in the vicinty and the probability of crossing fairway limit, 2)subjective evaluation such as the mental burden and the maneuvering disfficulty of shiphanders and 3) the opinions of shiphandlers. From th result of this simulation, we have a conclusion that the 80.000G/T cruise ship can be maneuvered safely at the planned terminal.
