Purpose This study aims to investigate the factors that influence decision making in relation to providing personal information on the internet with respect to the integration of the privacy calculus theory and protection motivation theory based on the dual-calculus model proposed by Li(2012). Design/methodology/approach The privacy calculus theory and protection motivation theory have been applied to explain privacy behavior to a certain degree but few studies have been conducted to explain privacy behavior based on the integration of these two theories. Although Li(2012) proposed the dual-calculus model, he only proposed its framework and did not carry out an empirical study. Therefore, this study proposes a research model that integrates these two theories and examines the relationship between the two theories through an empirical study. Findings According to the results of empirical analysis, it was found that all relations have statistically significant explanatory power except the relation between coping appraisal and privacy risk in the risk calculus process. Thus, the results verify that external threat played a decisive role in increasing the risk level of a consumer's privacy. It can be discussed the ways to enhance the privacy behavior of consumer on the internet through these findings.
Purpose The purpose of this study is to deduct the factors for explaining the economic behavior of an Internet user who provides personal information notwithstanding the concern about an invasion of privacy based on the Information Privacy Calculus Theory and Communication Privacy Management Theory. Design/methodology/approach This study made a design of the research model by integrating the factors deducted from the computation theory of information privacy with the factors deducted from the management theory of communication privacy on the basis of the Dual-Process Theory. In addition, this study, did empirical analysis of the path difference between groups by dividing Internet users into a group having experience in personal information spill and another group having no experience. Findings According to the empirical analysis result, this study confirmed that the Privacy Concern about forms through the Perceived Privacy Risk derived from the Disposition to value Privacy. In addition, this study confirmed that the behavior of an Internet user involved in personal information offering occurs due to the Perceived Benefits contradicting the Privacy Concern.

This study aimed to elucidate the information privacy attitudes and behaviors of users of size recommendation services based on body information. Focusing on the privacy calculus theory, the effects of information privacy concerns as well as perceived risk and benefit of information disclosure on information disclosure intention were analyzed. Consumers who used size recommendation services based on body information were surveyed from August 18 to 24, 2022. Analysis of the 251 responses collected revealed that information privacy concerns did not significantly affect information disclosure intention. Information privacy concerns had a positive effect on perceived privacy risk; however, perceived privacy risk had a negative effect on information disclosure intention, while perceived privacy benefit had a positive effect on information disclosure intention. Therefore, the privacy calculus theory confirms the existence of the privacy paradox, revealing perceived privacy benefit has a greater impact on information disclosure intention than perceived privacy risk.

As Location-based services on smartphone are getting more popular, users have more concern on exposing their location information. This study developed a research model to identify how smartphone users perceive on providing information pertaining to their location based on privacy calculus theory. 203 responses were analyzed with SmartPLS 2.0. The outcome of this research is quite interesting because conventional belief of privacy calculus perspective does not hold. The privacy calculus theory is based on assumption that human being is rational and decision to provide privacy information is determined by risk and benefit aspects. However, the result of this study is in accordance with behavioral economics perspective in which emotional judgment and behavioral judgement are affected by different factors.

In this paper, we examined the causes of privacy concerns and related factors in social log-in services. On the basis of the 'principal-agent theory,' we established factors such as perceived information asymmetry and fear of seller opportunism affecting information privacy concern of social log-in services users. In addition, we analyzed the relationship between the information privacy concern and intention to use on the basis of the 'privacy calculus theory'. The results of the study showed that (1) fear of seller opportunism had the significant effect on information privacy concerns, (2) information privacy concerns had the significant effect on perceived risk, (3) in accordance with the privacy calculus theory, perceived risk had the negative effect on intention to use, while perceived benefit had the positive effect on intention to use. The findings of the study are expected to help to improve the social log-in service firms' understanding for customers' information privacy protection behaviors.
Use of mobile apps being extended, privacy concern on the side of the users is increased while they are willing to provide the private information to use the apps. In this study, we tried to identify the motivating elements that influence the users' intention to use the apps, based on the tendency towards regulatory focus and the privacy calculus theory. To verify the study model, we collected data from 151 adults who use health apps throughout the country, and analyzed the data using the PLS-SEM method. According to the result of the study, it was turned out that tendency towards promotion focus had negative impact on privacy concern and privacy danger, and tendency towards prevention focus had positive impact on privacy concern. Privacy concern had negative impact on the intention to use the mobile apps, and privacy benefit and privacy knowledge had positive impact on the intention to use the mobile apps. Finally, the intention to use the mobile apps had positive impact on the intention to continue to use the mobile apps. In this study, we identified different impacts of two types of tendency towards regulatory focus on privacy concern, and identified different influences on the intention to use the mobile apps accordingly.
Despite the diverse benefits of smart home Internet of Things (IoT) services, the biggest obstacle to the actual usage of those services is concern about privacy. However, little research has investigated the impact of privacy control on users' intention to use smart home services. Based on communication privacy management theory and privacy calculus theory, this study investigates how privacy control options affect users' perceived benefits and costs and how those perceptions affect individuals' intentions to use smart home services by conducting an experiment. Our results showed that smart home privacy control options decreased perceived benefits and increased perceived costs. The perceived benefits and costs significantly affected the intention to use smart home security services. More intriguingly, the effect of perceived benefit was found to be stronger than that of the expected cost. This research contributes to the field of IoT and smart home research and provides practitioners with notable guidelines.
Increasing concerns regarding personal data privacy have complicated the acquisition of customer data through online marketing. This study investigates factors influencing customers' willingness to disclose information via a generative AI-based chatbot. Drawing on privacy calculus theory and regulatory focus theory, we explore how customer regulatory focus and familiarity with the generative AI-based chatbot shape disclosure intentions. Our study, involving 473 participants, reveals that low familiarity with the chatbot leads individuals with a prevention focus to perceive higher privacy risks and lower perceived usefulness compared to those with a promotion focus. However, with high familiarity, these differences diminish. Moreover, individuals with a promotion focus show a greater inclination to disclose information when familiarity with the generative AI-based chatbot is low, whereas this regulatory focus does not significantly impact disclosure intentions when familiarity is high. Perceived privacy risks mediate these relationships, underscoring the importance of understanding familiarity with the generative AI-based chatbot in facilitating personal information disclosure.
With the revision of the Credit Information Use and Protection Act in August 2020, the MyData service based on open banking policy will take effect in January 2022. Nonetheless, the previous studies focused on the legal system or security-related issues of such service. Therefore, this paper conducted an empirical study on financial consumers aged 20 or older nationwide to analyze the factors which influence the intention to use MyData services based on open banking. Five characteristics representing open banking-based MyData service were derived through prior research, and a research model that combined value-based adoption model and privacy calculus theory was presented. The proposed research model and the relationship of its variables was analyzed using a sample of 400 users that is randomly selected. The results of empirical analysis showed that personalization had the greatest influence on benefits and reliability on sacrifice among service characteristics. They also suggested that MyData operators should devote themselves to providing customized services optimized for customers and establishing trust relationships. It was confirmed that both usefulness and enjoyment had a great influence on perceived value, and in terms of sacrifice, the burden of financial costs had a greater influence than privacy concerns. This study is meaningful in that it explored the psychological propensity of financial consumers to identify service utilization factors and presented a new approach that can contribute to the successful settlement of the domestic MyData industry.
