Nutrient-derived Dietary Patterns and Risk of Colorectal Cancer: a Factor Analysis in Uruguay

  • In order to explore the role of nutrients and bioactive related substances in colorectal cancer, we conducted a case-control in Uruguay, which is the country with the highest production of beef in the world. Six hundred and eleven (611) cases afflicted with colorectal cancer and 1,362 controls drawn from the same hospitals in the same time period were analyzed through unconditional multiple logistic regression. This base population was submitted to a principal components factor analysis and three factors were retained. They were labeled as the meat-based, plant-based, and carbohydrates patterns. They were rotated using orthogonal varimax method. The highest risk was positively associated with the meat-based pattern (OR for the highest quartile versus the lowest one 1.63, 95 % CI 1.22-2.18, P value for trend = 0.001), whereas the plant-based pattern was strongly protective (OR 0.60, 95 % CI 0.45-0.81, P value for trend <0.0001. The carbohydrates pattern was only positively associated with colon cancer risk (OR 1.46, 95 % CI 1.02-2.09). The meat-based pattern was rich in saturated fat, animal protein, cholesterol, and phosphorus, nutrients originated in red meat. Since herocyclic amines are formed in the well-done red meat through the action of amino acids and creatine, it is suggestive that this pattern could be an important etiologic agent for colorectal cancer.

Reliability and Validity of the Quality of Life-Family Version (QOL-FV) in Turkish Family Caregivers of Patients with Cancer

  • Objectives: Family caregivers (FCs) are often the primary source of social and emotional support for cancer patients and play a major role in how well they manage their illness. The aim of this study was to create an Turkish version of the Quality of Life - Family Version (QOL-FV) and to evaluate its psychometric properties in a sample of FCs of cancer patients. Materials and Methods: This study was carried out with the FCs of 218 patients with cancer. Data were collected with a Demographic Questionnaire and the QOL-FV and The Multidimentional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). The QOL-FV was developed by Ferrell and Grant and is composed of 4 subdimensions. Linguistic validity, translation, back translation, and content validity were tested with expert opinions. Test-retest reliability, and internal consistency reliability were assessed. Construct validity was tested by factor analysis and with the scale of the MSPSS. Results: The family caregivers were between the ages of 46-56 (32.6%), a great number of them being male (52.8%). The scale is made up of four subdimensions. The result of the test-retest analysis of this scale was calculated as r:0.86. As a result of the reliability analysis, six items were eliminated from the scale, factor analyses were fulfilled according to varimax transformation through the method of principal components. Four new subdimensions were restrustured at the end of the analysis. The scale of Cronbach ${\alpha}$ coefficient was calculated as 0.90. Concurrent validity showed low correlations with the MSPSS (r=0.29). Conclusions: The QOL-FV, adapted into Turkish, was found to have sufficient reliability and validity.

  • This study is to clarify the effect of security majoring students' loyalty on department to future direction and job choice to suggest basic data for supporting student to prepare more active school life and future. The research object is security majoring male/female students among Y university in Gyeonggi-do Y city, K university in Gyeongsangbuk-do G city, k university in Gyeonggi-do S city between 1 Fab 2012 to 20 Aug 2012 and we randomly extracted the sample. In this research, we performed exploratory factor analysis and used principal components analysis and selected varimax direct rotation method to prove the reasonability of the contents. We then use the Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ value to measure the trust coefficient and during the process, the repeated or questions lack of correlation were deleted with judgment of researcher to improve trusty and reasonability.

Psychometric Evaluation of the Korean Social Support Questionnaire (한국 사회적지지 측정도구 개발)

  • Purpose: Research related to social support in Korea has been hampered by paucity of measurement tools reflecting Korean culture. The aim of the study was to develop Korean social support questionnaire (KSSQ) based on the Korean social support pyramid and to test psychometric properties of the KSSQ. Methods: The questionnaire was administered to 701 subjects and 658 college students. Psychometric analyses included factor analyses, expert validity, criterion-related validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability. Results: A principal components analysis support for construct validity, eliciting a three factor solution accounting for 65.46% of variance in scores. Concurrent and discriminant validity supported criterion-related validity. Internal consistency of reliability was support with Cronbach's alpha of .97-.98 for the entire scale. Test-retest reliability was .76. Conclusion: This initial testing of KSSQ to measure Korean social support demonstrates evidence of reliability and validity. Assessment of known-group validity and norm establishment of KSSQ are suggested to provide further sound psychometric properties and practical measurement tools.

Psychometric Properties of the Revised Multidimensional Coping Scale in University Students (개정판 다차원적 대처척도의 타당도와 신뢰도 : 대학생을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of the Revised Multidimensional Coping Scale(MCS-R) in university student who attended smoking cessation group therapy. Data were collected from 198 university students. Construct validity using exploratory factor analysis were conducted and convergent validity using Resilience scale, Patient Health Questionare-9(PHQ-9) were conducted. A Principal components analysis with varimax rotation and Kaiser normalization identified a thirteen-factor accounting for 69.7% of the variance in scores. Also, the internal consistency(0.66-0.94) and test-retest reliability was adequate(0.44-0.85) in all subscales of the MCS-R. The MCS-R has adequate psychometric characteristics so it can be used to verify.

Source Apportionment Study and Chemical Composition of PM10 and PM2.5 in the Industrial Complex of Busan City, Korea (SEM-EDX 분석법에 의한 부산 S공업단지의 PM10과 PM2.5의 화학적 조성 및 발생원 추정)

  • This study identified physical characteristics and aerosol particle sources of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ in the industrial complex of Busan Metropolitan City, Korea. Samples of $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$ and also soil, were collected in several areas during the year of 2012 to investigate elemental composition. A URG cyclone sampler was used for collection. The samples were collected according to each experimental condition, and the analysis method of SEM-EDX was used to determine the concentration of each metallic element. The comparative analysis indicated that their mass concentration ranged from 1% to 3%. The elements in the industrial region that were above 10% were Si, Al, Fe, and Ca. Those below 5% were Na, Mg, and S. The remaining elements (1% of total mass) consisted of elements such as Ni, Co, Br and Pb. Finally, a statistical tool was applied to the elemental results to identify each source for the industrial region. From a principal components analysis (SPSS, Ver 20.0) performed to analyze the possible sources of $PM_{10}$ in the industrial region, five main factors were determined. Factor 1 (Si, Al), which accounted for 15.8% of the total variance, was mostly affected by soil and dust from manufacturing facilities nearby, Factors 2 (Cu, Ni), 3 (Zn, Pb), and 4 (Mn, Fe), which also accounted for some of variance, were mainly related to iron, non-ferrous metals, and other industrial manufacturing sources. Also, five factors determined to access possible sources of $PM_{2.5}$, Factor 1 (Na, S), accounted for 13.5% of the total variance and was affected by sea-salt particles and fuel incineration sources, and Factors 2 (Ti, Mn), 3 (Pb, Cl), 4 (K, Al) also explained significant proportions of the variance. Theses factors mean that the $PM_{2.5}$ emission sources may be considered as sources of incineration, and metals, and non-ferrous manufacturing industries.

Electronic Sensors and Multivariate Approaches for Taste and Odor in Korean Soups and Stews (전자센서와 다변량 분석을 이용한 국내 국·탕류의 향미 특성 분석)

  • This is an approach study on the sensory properties (taste and odor) of 15 types of Korean conventional soups and stews using electronic nose and tongue. The relative sensor intensity for the taste components of the samples using electronic tongue was demonstrated. By SRS (sourness) sensor, sogogi-baechuguk (beef and cabbage soup) had the highest rate of 9.0. The STS (saltiness) sensor showed the highest score of 8.2 for ojingeoguk (squid soup). For the UMS (umami) sensor, which identifies savoriness, the sogogi-baechuguk was the highest at 10.1. The SWS (sweetness) sensors showed relatively little difference, with sigeumchi-doenjangguk (spinach and bean paste soup) at the highest of 7.3. According to the BRS sensor, which tests for bitterness, the siraegi-doenjangguk (dried radish green and bean paste soup) was the highest at 7.8. By principal component analysis (PCA), we observed variances of 56.21% in principal component 1 (PC1) and 25.23% in PC2. For each flavor component, we observed -0.95 and -0.20 for factor loading of PC1 and PC2 for SRS sensors, 0.96 and 0.14 for STS sensors, and -0.94 and 0.22 for PC1 and PC2 for UMS sensors, and PC1 and 0.22 for PC1 and PC2 loading for SWS sensors. The similarity between the samples identified by clustering analysis was largely identified by 4 clusters. A total of 25 kinds of volatile compounds in 15 samples were identified, and the ones showing the highest relative content in all samples were identified as ethanol and 2-methylthiophhene. The main ingredient analysis confirmed variances of 28.54% in PC1 and 20.80% in PC2 as a result of the pattern for volatile compounds in 15 samples. In the cluster analysis, it was found to be largely classified into 3 clusters. The data in this study can be used for a sensory property database of conventional Korean soups and stews using electronic sensors.

Studies on the Principal Taste Components in Soup Base of Commercial Ramyons (라면스프류의 감미성분(感味成分) 분석연구)

  • Major sensory characteristic components-salty(NaCl), sweet(free sugars), palatable tastes(MSG, IMP, GMP) and related components-in soup base of commercial ramyons(25 ramyons, 11 bowl ramyons) were investigated to estimate their use level. $Na^+$ content($18.73{\pm}3.18%$ in ramyons and $17.62{\pm}1.92%$ in bowl ramyons) was determined by IC so that NaCl values (20.90% in ramyons and 18.16% in bowl ramyons) could be calculated from it. And from the assayed results of glutamic acid($10.50{\pm}3.78%$ in ramyons and $10.47{\pm}1.68%$ in bowl ramyons) by LC, MSG values were 12.08% in ramyons and 12.04% in bowl ramyons. GMP and IMP contents were $0.15{\pm}0.06%$, $0.20{\pm}0.11%$ in ramyons and $0.14{\pm}0.03%$, $0.18{\pm}0.05%$ in bowl ramyons, respectively. In addition, free sugars contained in ramyons such as sucrose, glucose and fructose were also analyzed by LC. In order to compare the sweetness, the free sugars were multiplied by conversion factor(sucrose 1, glucose 0.7, fructose 1.1), which showed $19.85{\pm}5.68%$ in ramyons and $18.02{\pm}7.82%$ in bowl ramyons. Therefore it is concluded that the analytical method of $Na^+$, glutamic acid and free sugars can be used as a simple and exact technique for the determination of NaCl, MSG and sweetness of ramyons.

Anlysis of the Environmental Load Impact Factors for IPC Girder Bridge Using Principal Component Anlysis (주성분 분석을 활용한 IPC 거더교의 환경부하량 영향요인 분석)

  • In the 21st century, the Earth has continued its efforts to reduce carbon emissions to overcome the crisis caused by climate change. The construction industry, which is a representative industry that produces large amounts of the environmental load during construction, should actively reduce the amount of the environmental load. From the planning stage of the construction facility, it is necessary to consider the environmental load such as route selection and structure type selection to reduce the environmental load. However, the environmental load can be estimated based on the input resource amount. However, in the planning stage, it is difficult to accurately calculate the environmental load due to lack of information on the construction amount. The purpose of this study is to select the environmental load factors for IPC girder bridges to be used in the environmental load estimation model in the planning stage. Specific information related to the environmental load was selected from a list of information available in the planning stage, reflecting the Life Cycle Assessment(LCA), correlation, principal components analysis and expert opinion. The list of selected planning stage information is 10 such as span length and bridge extension, and it is expected to be used as a basic data for the future development of environmental load estimation model.

Study on Simulation and Calculation Method of Thermal Error Compensation System for a Ball Screw Feed Drive (볼 스크류 이송장치 열 에러 보상 시스템의 시뮬레이션 및 계산 방법에 관한 연구)

  • Due to the requirement of the development of the precision manufacturing industry, the accuracy of machine tools has become a key issue in this field. A critical factor that affects the accuracy of machine tools is the feed system, which is generally driven by a ball screw. Basically, to improve the performance of the feed drive system, which will be thermally extended lengthwise by continuous usage, a thermal error compensation system that is highly dependent on the feedback temperature or positioning data is employed in the machine tool system. Due to the overdependence on measuring technology, the cost of the compensation system and low productivity level are inevitable problems in the machine tool industry. This paper presents a novel feed drive thermal error compensation system method that could compensate for thermal error without positioning or temperature feedback. Regarding this thermal error compensation system, the heat generation of components, principal of compensation, thermal model, mathematic model, and calculation method are discussed. As a result, the test data confirm the correctness of the developed feed drive thermal error compensation system very well.
