In hydrology, it is a difficult task to deal with multivariate time series such as modeling streamflows of an entire complex river system. Normal distribution based model such as MARMA (Multivariate Autorgressive Moving average) has been a major approach for modeling the multivariate time series. There are some limitations for the normal based models. One of them might be the unfavorable data-transformation forcing that the data follow the normal distribution. Furthermore, the high dimension multivariate model requires the very large parameter matrix. As an alternative, one might be decomposing the multivariate data into independent components and modeling it individually. In 1985, Lins used Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The five scores, the decomposed data from the original data, were taken and were formulated individually. The one of the five scores were modeled with AR-2 while the others are modeled with AR-1 model. From the time series analysis using the scores of the five components, he noted "principal component time series might provide a relatively simple and meaningful alternative to conventional large MARMA models". This study is inspired from the researcher's quote to develop a multivariate simulation model. The multivariate simulation model is suggested here using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Independent Component Analysis (ICA). Three modeling step is applied for simulation. (1) PCA is used to decompose the correlated multivariate data into the uncorrelated data while ICA decomposes the data into independent components. Here, the autocorrelation structure of the decomposed data is still dominant, which is inherited from the data of the original domain. (2) Each component is resampled by block bootstrapping or K-nearest neighbor. (3) The resampled components bring back to original domain. From using the suggested approach one might expect that a) the simulated data are different with the historical data, b) no data transformation is required (in case of ICA), c) a complex system can be decomposed into independent component and modeled individually. The model with PCA and ICA are compared with the various statistics such as the basic statistics (mean, standard deviation, skewness, autocorrelation), and reservoir-related statistics, kernel density estimate.
Chemometric technique was applied to the sugar composition in five honeys of known botanical or geographical origin following HPLC. Fructose and glucose were predominant carbohydrates in honeys, and small amount of sucrose was also detected in one sample. Sugar contents in honeys samples were compared by the geographical or botanical origin. Fructose/glucose ratio ranged from 0.99 to 1.55 was obtained and these results are in good agreement with the ratio of literature. The plot of principal components analysis(PCA) showed that different honey samples grouped into distinct cluster by the geographical or botanical origin. Increasing the first or second principal component score, higher amount of sugar or less fructose/glucose ratio was observed in PCA plot. Chemometric approach was very useful to provide pattern recognition of sugar profile or quality indices of honey sample and to detect adulteration.
Purpose Principal component analysis (PCA) is a method often used in the neuroimagre analysis as a multivariate analysis technique for describing the structure of high dimensional correlation as the structure of lower dimensional space. PCA is a statistical procedure that uses an orthogonal transformation to convert a set of observations of correlated variables into a set of values of linearly independent variables called principal components. In this study, in order to investigate the usefulness of PCA in the brain PET image analysis, we tried to analyze C[11]-PIB PET image as a representative case. Materials and Methods Nineteen subjects were included in this study (normal = 9, AD/MCI = 10). For C[11]-PIB, PET scan were acquired for 20 min starting 40 min after intravenous injection of 9.6 MBq/kg C[11]-PIB. All emission recordings were acquired with the Biograph 6 Hi-Rez (Siemens-CTI, Knoxville, TN) in three-dimensional acquisition mode. Transmission map for attenuation-correction was acquired using the CT emission scans (130 kVp, 240 mA). Standardized uptake values (SUVs) of C[11]-PIB calculated from PET/CT. In normal subjects, 3T MRI T1-weighted images were obtained to create a C[11]-PIB template. Spatial normalization and smoothing were conducted as a pre-processing for PCA using SPM8 and PCA was conducted using Matlab2012b. Results Through the PCA, we obtained linearly uncorrelated independent principal component images. Principal component images obtained through the PCA can simplify the variation of whole C[11]-PIB images into several principal components including the variation of neocortex and white matter and the variation of deep brain structure such as pons. Conclusion PCA is useful to analyze and extract the main pattern of C[11]-PIB image. PCA, as a method of multivariate analysis, might be useful for pattern recognition of neuroimages such as FDG-PET or fMRI as well as C[11]-PIB image.

In this paper, we propose a TSK-type fuzzy classifier using PCA(Principal Component Analysis), FCM(Fuzzy C-Means) clustering and hybrid GA(genetic algorithm). First, input data is transformed to reduce correlation among the data components by PCA. FCM clustering is applied to obtain a initial TSK-type fuzzy classifier. Parameter identification is performed by AGA(Adaptive Genetic Algorithm) and RLSE(Recursive Least Square Estimate). we applied the proposed method to Iris data classification problems and obtained a better performance than previous works.
The metabolic discrimination of safflowers from various geographical origins was performed using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy followed by principal components analysis. With a combination of these techniques, safflower samples from different origins could be discriminated using the first two principal components (PC) of the 1H NMR spectra of the 50% methanol fractions. PC1 and PC2 accounted cumulatively for 91.3% of the variation in all variables. The major peaks in the 1H NMR spectra that contributed to the discrimination were assigned to fatty acid (terminal CH3), lactic acid, acetic acid, choline derivatives, glycine, and safflower yellow derivatives. In this study, we suggest that various types of safflower can be discriminated using PCA and 1H NMR spectra.
Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) fingerprint analysis, Principle Components Analysis (PCA), and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) were introduced for quality assessment of Curcuma longa L. (C. longa). The GC-MS fingerprint method was developed and validated by analyzing 33 batches of samples of C. longa from different geographic locations. 18 chromatographic peaks were selected as characteristic peaks and their relative peak areas (RPA) were calculated for quantitative expression. Two principal components (PCs) were extracted by PCA. C. longa collected from Guizhou and Fujian were separated from other samples by PC1, capturing 71.83% of variance. While, PC2 contributed for their further separation, capturing 11.13% of variance. HCA confirmed the result of PCA analysis. Therefore, GC-MS fingerprint study with chemometric techniques provides a very flexible and reliable method for quality assessment of C. longa.

In this study, face recognition system was designed based on polynomial Radial Basis Function Neural Networks(pRBFNNs) pattern classifier using 2-directional 2-dimensional principal component analysis algorithm. Existing one dimensional PCA leads to the reduction of dimension of image expressed by the multiplication of rows and columns. However $(2D)^2PCA$(2-Directional 2-Dimensional Principal Components Analysis) is conducted to reduce dimension to each row and column of image. and then the proposed intelligent pattern classifier evaluates performance using reduced images. The proposed pRBFNNs consist of three functional modules such as the condition part, the conclusion part, and the inference part. In the condition part of fuzzy rules, input space is partitioned with the aid of fuzzy c-means clustering. In the conclusion part of rules. the connection weight of RBFNNs is represented as the linear type of polynomial. The essential design parameters (including the number of inputs and fuzzification coefficient) of the networks are optimized by means of Differential Evolution. Using Yale and AT&T dataset widely used in face recognition, the recognition rate is obtained and evaluated. Additionally IC&CI Lab dataset is experimented with for performance evaluation.
The differences in the nonvolatile metabolites of pine-mushrooms (Tricholoma matsutake Sing.) according to different parts and heating times were analyzed by applying principal component analysis (PCA) to $^1H$ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy data. The $^1H$ NMR spectra and PCA enabled the differences of nonvolatile metabolites among mushroom samples to be clearly observed. The two parts of mushrooms could be easily discriminated based on PC 1, and could be separated according to different heattreated times based on PC 3. The major peaks in the $^1H$ NMR spectra that contributed to differences among mushroom samples were assigned to trehalose, succinic acid, choline, leucine/isoleucine, and alanine. The content of trehalose was higher in the pileus than in the stipe of all mushroom samples, whereas succinic acid, choline, and leucine/isoleucine were the main components in the stipe. Heating resulted in significant losses of alanine and leucine/isoleucine, whereas succinic acid, choline, and trehalose were the most abundant components in mushrooms heat-treated for 3 min and 5 min, respectively.

Determination of crack depth in filed using the self-calibrating surface wave transmission measurement and the cutting frequency in the transmission function (TRF) is very difficult due to variations of the measurement conditions. In this study, it is proposed to use the measured full TRF as a feature for crack depth assessment. A principal component analysis (PCA) is employed to generate a basis of the measured TRFs for various crack cases. The measured TRFs are represented by their projections onto the most significant principal components. Then artificial neural networks (NNs) using the PCA-compressed TRFs is applied to assess the crack in concrete. Experimental study is carried out for five different crack cases to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results reveal that the proposed method can be effectively used for the crack depth assessment of concrete structures.
