This paper tested 11 concrete-encased concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) composite columns and one reinforced concrete column under combined axial compression and lateral loads. The primary parameters, including the loading system, axial compression ratio, volume stirrup ratio, diameter-to-thickness ratio of the steel tube, and stirrup form, were varied. The influence of the parameters on the failure mode, strength, ductility, energy dissipation, strength degradation, and damage evolution of the composite columns were revealed. Moreover, a two-parameter nonlinear seismic damage model for composite columns was established, which can reflect the degree and development process of the seismic damage. In addition, the relationships among the inter-story drift ratio, damage index and seismic performance level of composite columns were established to provide a theoretical basis for seismic performance design and damage assessments.
Preloading of soft clays is a common ground stabilization method for improvement of compressibility and the undrained shear strength. The waiting period under preload is a primary design criterion controlling the degree of improvement obtained. Upon unloading the overconsolidation attained with respect to actual loads defines the long term performance. This paper presents a laboratory study for investigation of creep behavior of Famagusta Bay alluvial soft soil preloaded under various effective stresses for analysis of long term performance based on the degree of overconsolidation. Traditional one-dimensional consolidation tests as well as modified creep tests are performed on reconstituted soft specimens. Compressibility parameters are precisely backcalculated using one dimensional consolidation theory and the coefficient of creep is determined using the traditional Cassagrande method as well as two modified methods based on log cycles of time and the inflection of the creep curve. The test results indicated that the long term creep can be successfully predicted considering the proposed method. The creep coefficients derived as part of this method can also be related to the recompression index (recompression index, swelling index) considering the results of the testing method adopted in this study.
Some authors have concluded that spiral structures and shocks do not develop if an adiabatic index $\gamma$ > 1.16 is adopted in accretion disc modelling, whilst others have claimed that they obtained well defined spirals and shocks adopting a $\gamma$ = 1.2 and a $M_2/ M_1$ = 1 stellar mass ratio. In our opinion, it should be possible to develop spiral structures for low compressibility gas accretion discs if the primary component is a black hole. We considered a primary black hole of 8M0 and a small secondary component of 0.5M$\bigodot$ to favour spiral structures formations and possible spiral shocks via gas compression due to a strong gravitational attraction. We performed two 3D SPH simulations and two 2D SPH simulations and characterized a low compressibility model and a high compressibility model for each couple of simulations. 2D models reveal spiral structures existence. Moreover, spiral shocks are also evident in high compressibility 2D model at the outer disc edge. We believe that we could develop even well defined spiral shocks considering a more massive primary component.
Consolidation settlements on soft clay are often greatly and potentially damaging to structures. Currently, large-scale projects are in planning or progressing in Korea. These structures will be constructed on both thick and soft clay layers, and so the accurate evaluation of magnitude of settlement is required at every step in design and construction. Especially, secondary compression may play an important role in consolidation settlements of soft clay. Generally, the magnitudes of secondary compression are evaluated by laboratory and in-situ consolidation tests. The empirical $C_a/C_c$ may be economical, fast and powerful tool in estimating secondary consolidation settlement. However, the databases of the $C_a/C_c$ at construction site in Korea are insufficient. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship of $C_a/C_c$ on marine clay near the southern sea in Korea. A series of incremental loading consolidation tests (measuring base pore water pressure) is peformed. It was found that the $C_a/C_c$ on undisturbed marine clay is 0.0397.

The consolidation tests are conducted to investigate the soil particle crushing stress for understanding the secondary compression characteristics of carbonate sandy sabkha soil caused by particle crushing under a high confining stress. The rate of secondary crushing compression ($C_{{\alpha}{\epsilon}}{^*}$) is introduced instead of the rate of secondary compression to define the characteristic of the particle crushing compression settlement ($S_s{^*}$). Void ratio ($e_p{^*}$) and settlement ($H_p{^*}$) in particle crushing are used as a reference point of secondary behavior, and the ratio of primary compression index ($C_c$) to secondary crushing compression ($C_{{\alpha}{\epsilon}}{^*}$), $C_{{\alpha}{\epsilon}}{^*}/C_c$ value was changed from 0.0105 to 0.0187. When comparing with quartz sands, secondary compression settlement of sabkha is very large due to particle crushing which is not usually observed in quartz sand. It is observed that as the depth of sabkha layer becomes deep, the $S_s{^*}$ and $C_{{\alpha}{\epsilon}}{^*}$ increase under the same stress level.
A primary factor affecting on the design of soft ground is to determine the soil properties (Compression index, Coefficient of consolidation) and the depth of soft ground. It could be the basic sources to estimate settlement behavior of soft ground. Even though the reliable soil examination equipment was used to examine soil to determine the depth of soft ground, it's very hard to find out the accurate properties of soft ground, because the condition of indoor experiment cannot reproduce the circumstances of ground perfectly. Therefore, this study was re-estimated to find out the most reliable soil properties by using back-analysis with field monitoring data of "Site preparation for Airplane Mooring of Incheon International Airport Phase II Development" for 317days.

Objectives : This study reports the clinical case of a patient diagnosed with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament treated with Korean Medicine focusing on Chuna therapy. Methods : The patient was treated by a doctor from July 18th, 2019 to November 28th, 2019. The patient was diagnosed with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament based on magnetic resonance imaging results and was recommended to undergo surgery at another hospital. The primary complaint of the patient was left neck pain, left arm sensation, right leg sensation, and right leg loss of strength. The doctor treated the patient with Chuna therapy, acupuncture, cupping, herbal medicine, and pharmacopuncture. The effect of treatment was evaluated using visual analogue scale, neck disability index, pain rating score and Japanese Orthopedic Association score. Spurling, compression, and distraction tests were utilized. Results : Visual analogue scale decreased from 10 at the arm and 10 at the leg to 1 and 2, respectively. Neck disability index decreased from 25 to 11, pain rating score decreased from 66 to 1, and Japanese Orthopedic Association score recovered from 12 to 17 points. In addition, positive spurling test, compression test, and distraction test all improved to negative. Conclusions : Korean medicine treatment can be effective for ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament patients, even when surgery is recommended. Further clinical studies, such as case series and case-control studies, are required to verify these findings.
The final consolidation settlement is important factor in soft ground improvement because of settlement management and completion time. The compression index, which is slope of primary consolidation curve, is commonly used for the calculation of final consolidation settlement in clay layer. The existing final consolidation settlement is calculated in total consolidation layer that is assumed as one layer. This paper describes analysis result of the acquired settlement, when the consolidation layer is divided as several layer. The consolidation settlement increased according to increase of the divided layer and then it is converged. This result was unrelated to surcharge load. The division effect of layer is very high when the surcharge load is less than the consolidation layer thickness. The division effect of layer is 1.2 to 1.4 in the general surcharge load, and this value can be apply as safety factor in the calculation of final consolidation settlement.

The determination of the pre-consolidation load known to have a great effect on the consolidation characteristics of the soil have been researched and discussed in detail by many other researchers. A study was undertaken to investigate and compare the effect of pre-consolidation loads on the coefficient of permeability and the consolidation characterisics of soil through the consolidation test on the three types of soil samples. The results of this study are follows; 1. Large compression index is dependent on initial void ratio of the sample being used and the pressure-void ratio curve shows a curved linear relationship in over-consolidated area but a linear relationship in normally consolidated area.2. Settlement-time curve is S-shaped where the pressure is larger than pre-consolidation load and regardless of over-burden pressure, it is a similar straight line respectively in the secondary consolidation area. 3. Primary consolidation ratio of the sample increases almost linearly with the increase of over-burden pressure but the coefficient of volume compressibility decreases linearly with the increase of it. 4. Time factor of a certain degree of consolidation increases with over-burden pressure but the coefficient of consolidation decreases with it in over-consolidated area. There is a linear relationship between them in normally consolidated area. 5. The void ratio of completion point of primary consolidation decreases linearly with over-burden pressure. 6. The coefficient of permeability of sample decreases linearly with over-burden pressure in normally consolidated area, also it increases linearly with increment of the void ratio of the sample.
The strength of lumped cokes can be represented by some index numbers. Although some indexes are suggested, these indexes are not enough to enlighten fracture mechanism. To find essential mechanism, a computational way, discrete element method, is applied to the uniaxial compression test for cylindrical specimen. The cylindrical specimen is a kind of lumped particle mass with parallel bonding that will be broken when the normal stress and shear stress is over a critical value. It is revealed that the primary factors for cokes fracture are parallel spring constant, parallel bond strength, bonding radius and packing ratio the parallel bond strength and radius of the parallel combination the packing density. Especially, parallel spring constant is directly related with elastic constant and yield strength.
