We consider a cognitive network with a primary and a secondary channel. Primary users have higher priority on the usage of the primary channel, and secondary users are allowed to opportunistically access the primary channel at times when the channel is not occupied by primary users. The secondary channel is dedicated only to secondary users. An analytical model is presented to obtain the performance of an opportunistic spectrum access using both the primary and secondary channels, and is validated by simulations.

In this paper, we propose a sum transmission rate maximization based cooperative spectrum sharing protocol with quality-of-service (QoS) support for both of the primary and secondary systems, which exploits the situation when the primary system experiences a weak channel. The secondary transmitter STb which provides the best performance for the primary and secondary systems is selected to forward the primary signal. Specifically, STb helps the primary system achieve the target rate by using a fraction of its power to forward the primary signal. As a reward, it can gain spectrum access by using the remaining power to transmit its own signal. We study the secondary user selection and optimal power allocation such that the sum transmission rate of primary and secondary systems is maximized, while the QoS of both primary and secondary systems can be guaranteed. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed spectrum sharing protocol and its benefit to both primary and secondary systems.

This paper describes a compensation algorithm for a measurement voltage transformer (VT) based on the hysteresis characteristics of the core. The error of the VT is caused by the voltages across the primary and secondary windings. The latter depends on the secondary current whilst the former depends on the primary current, i.e. the sum of the exciting current and the secondary current. The proposed algorithm calculates the voltages across the primary and secondary windings and add them to the measured secondary voltage for compensation. To do this, the primary and secondary currents should be estimated. The secondary current is obtained directly from the secondary voltage and used to calculate the voltage across the secondary winding. For the primary current, in this paper, the exciting current is decomposed into the two currents, i.e. the core-loss current and the magnetizing current. The core-loss current is obtained by dividing the primary induced voltage by the core-loss resistance. The magnetizing current is obtained by inserting the flux into the flux-magnetizing current curve. The calculated voltages across the primary and secondary windings are added to the measured secondary current for compensation. The proposed compensation algorithm improves the error of the VT significantly.

In this paper, we propose a cooperative multi-relay scheme for a secondary system to achieve spectrum access along with a primary system. In the primary network, a primary transmitter (PT) transmits the primary signal to a primary receiver (PR). In the secondary network, N secondary transmitter-receiver pairs (ST-SR) selected by a centralized control unit (CCU) are ready to assist the primary network. In particular, in the first time slot, PT broadcasts the primary signal to PR, which is also received by STs and SRs. At STs, the primary signal is regenerated and linearly combined with the secondary signal by assigning fractions of the available power to the primary and secondary signals respectively. The combined signal is then broadcasted by STs in a predetermined order. In order to achieve diversity gain, STs, SRs and PT will combine received replicas of the primary signal, using selection combining technique (SC). We derive the exact outage probability for the primary network as well as the secondary network. The simulation results are presented to verify the theoretical analyses.
In plasma processing reactors, it is common practice to control plasma density and ion bombardment energy by manipulating excitation voltage and frequency. In this paper, a dually excited capacitively coupled rf plasma reactor is self-consistently simulated with a three moment model. Effects of phase differences between primary and secondary voltage waves, simultaneously modulated at various combinations of commensurate frequencies, on plasma properties are investigated. The simulation results show that plasma potential and density as well as primary self-dc bias are nearly unaffected by the phase lag between the primary and the secondary voltage waves. The results also show that, with the secondary frequency substantially lower than the primary frequency, secondary self·do bias remains constant regardless of the phase lag. As the secondary frequency approaches to the primary frequency, however, the secondary self-dc bias becomes greatly altered by the phase lag, and so does the ion bombardment energy at the secondary electrode. These results demonstrate that ion bombardment energy can be more carefully controlled through plasma simulation.

In this paper, we propose a cooperative hybrid spectrum sharing protocol by jointly considering interweave (opportunistic) and underlay schemes. In the proposed protocol, secondary users can access the licensed spectrum along with the primary system. Our network scenario comprises a single primary transmitter-receiver (PTx-PRx) pair and a group of M secondary transmitter-receiver (STx-SRx) pairs within the transmission range of the primary system. Secondary transmitters are divided into two groups: active and inactive. A secondary transmitter that gets an opportunity to access the secondary spectrum is called "active". One of the idle or inactive secondary transmitters that achieves the primary request target rate $R_{PT}$ will be selected as a best decode-and-forward (DF) relay (Re) to forward the primary information when the data rate of the direct link between PTx and PRx falls below $R_{PT}$. We investigate the ergodic capacity and outage probability of the primary system with cooperative relaying and outage probability of the secondary system. Our theoretical and simulation results show that both the primary and secondary systems are able to achieve performance improvement in terms of outage probability. It is also shown that ergodic capacity and outage probability improve when the active secondary transmitter is located farther away from the PRx.
PURPOSES : This study aims to draw differences between primary and secondary crashes by comparing crash characteristics and to identify the unique characteristics of secondary crashes for making better effective countermeasures to reduce secondary crashes. METHODS : The characteristics of secondary crashes were compared to those of primary crashes through a two sample proportional test (z-test). RESULTS : The results showed that vehicle-to-vehicle crashes and vehicle-to-person crashes are dominant crash types in secondary crashes. Compared to primary crashes, secondary crashes were likely to occur during nighttime. With respect to season and weather, the proportion of secondary crashes occurred during winter and in snowy weather is relatively higher than that of primary crashes. The main causes of primary crashes were found to be drowsiness, speeding, and exaggerated steering control, whereas main factors affecting the occurrence of secondary crashes were negligence of keeping eyes forward and no keeping a safe distance as expected. CONCLUSIONS : The characteristics affecting the occurrence of secondary crashes are different from those of primary crashes, indicating that proper countermeasures should be established to prevent the occurrence of secondary crashes on highways.
In this paper, we propose an anti-interference cooperative spectrum sharing strategy for cognitive system, in which a secondary system can operate on the same spectrum of a primary system. Specifically, the primary system leases a fraction of its transmission time to the secondary system in exchange for cooperation to achieve the target rate. To gain access to the spectrum of the primary system, the secondary system needs to allocate a fraction of bandwidth to help forward the primary signal. As a reward, the secondary system can use the remaining bandwidth to transmit its own signal. The secondary system uses different bandwidth to transmit the primary and its own signal. Thus, there will be no interference felt at primary and secondary systems. We study the joint optimization of time and bandwidth allocation such that the transmission rate of the secondary system is maximized, while guaranteeing the primary system, as a higher priority, to achieve its target transmission rate. Numerical results show that the secondary system can gain significant improvement with the proposed strategy.
The micelle formation of NaDC was studied by fluorometric and viscometric measurements. The thermodynamic parameters of the primary and secondary micellization of the bile salt were evaluated. The primary micelle formation was appeared to be an entropy driven process due to hydrophobic effect, while the major driving force for secondary micelle formation of the bile salt is the large negative enthalpy. The secondary micelle provides less hydrophobic environment to pyrene than the primary micelle does. The cooperative aggregation of primary micelles via hvdrogen bond formation was proposed for the secondary micelle formation.

The characteristics of NOx emission in multi fuel/air staged combustor have been experimentally studied. The design concept of multi fuel/air staged combustor is creation of two separate flame, a primary flame is act as a pilot flame for the secondary combustion stage combustion zone, where most of fuel burns. Experiments were performed on a semi-industrial scale (thermal input 0.233 ㎿) in a laboratory furnace and Liquefied Petroleum Gas(LPG) was used as primary and secondary fuels. The study included parametric study to identify the optimum operating conditions which are primary/secondary fuel ratio, primary/secondary air ratio, primary swirl intensity and secondary swirl intensity for reducing NOx emission. The test demonstrated that NOx emission can be reduced by >70% in accordance with operating conditions.
