Sand scorpions are nocturnal animals to mostly use tactile senses to detect their prey. It has been reported that sand scorpions have high vibration sensitivity for their prey-localizing behavior. We tested vibration experiments in the sand with microphone sensors to model the sand scorpion's behavior and a time-difference model was applied to find the direction of a vibration source. Using the information of the arrival time of the vibration signal to reach each leg position, we can find the location of the vibration source.
An experiment was conducted among free-ranging red-winned blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) that acquired illness-induced conditioned taste aversion (CTA) by consuming insect prey tainted with a dose of parathion up to 2.0 mg/kg consumer body weight. Birds quickly acquired CTA and avoided all four insect prey during a lengthy posttest without parathion. This experiment proved that organophosphate insecticide application in the field might decrease the food consumption of wild birds and may also affect the reproductive success of breeding birds. Thus, CTA acquired accidentally after eating insecticide contaminated insect prey appears to be one of the reasons for the decreasing number of breeding songbirds in North America.
The spider, Tetragnatha squamata and its prey Empoasca vitis, the tea leafhopper, were investigated in laboratory on the prey-predator relationship. The predator spider showed a significant response to the increase of the prey. The predation effiency and the response of predator to its density were examined as well. The result of the experiments are give as questions.
Using calculus inequalities and embedding theorems in $R^1$, we establish $W^1_2$-estimates for the solutions of prey-predator population model with cross-diffusion and self-diffusion terms. Two cases are considered; (i) $d_1\;=\;d_2,\;{\alpha}_{12}\;=\;{\alpha}_{21}\;=\;0$, and (ii) $0\;<\;{\alpha}_{21}\;<\;8_{\alpha}_{11},\;0\;<\;{\alpha}_{12}\;<\;8_{\alpha}_{22}$. It is proved that solutions are bounded uniformly pointwise, and that the uniform bounds remain independent of the growth of the diffusion coefficient in the system. Also, convergence results are obtained when $t\;{\to}\;{\infty}$ via suitable Liapunov functionals.
This paper looks into phase plane behavior of the solution near the positive steady-state for the system with prey density dependent response functions. The positive invariance and boundedness property of the solution to the objective model are proved. The existence result of a positive steady-state and asymptotic analysis near the positive constant equilibrium for the objective system are of interest. The results of phase plane analysis for the system are proved by observing the asymptotic properties of the solutions. Also some numerical analysis results for the behaviors of the solutions in time are provided.
In this paper, we developed three theoretical models based on prey and predator that exhibit holling-type response functions. In both a fuzzy and a crisp environment, we have provided a mathematical formulation for the prey predator concept. We used the signed distance method to defuzzify the triangular fuzzy numbers using the alpha-cut function. We can identify equilibrium points for all three theoretical models using the defuzzification technique. Utilizing a variational matrix, stability is also performed with the two species model through three theoretical models. Results are presented, followed by discussion. MATLAB software is used to provide numerical simulations.
The research on food habits of the Fire-bellied toad, Bombina orientalis, distributed in Korea was done targeting a total of 487 individuals in 4 inland areas and 8 areas of Jeju island from April 1990 to September 1992. The survey results showed that there was no difference In the number of the preys of the Korean Fire-bellied per individual between the inland areas and Jeju island and the toad preyed on 1 to 3 individuals on an average, but there happened a case where some Fire-bellied toads in Jeju preyed on as much as 94 individuals. There were 13 orders surveyed in the kinds of prey of the Fire-bellied toad inland, and 10 in Jeju island with a high predation frequency and the number of the preyed individuals of Coleoptera and Hymenoptera. The predation frequency of the two populations was similar in terms of prey taxa, but there appealed a different aspect in the number of the individuals by prey taxa. In short, the inland population of Fire-bellied toad was found to eat more various sorts of preys, not satisfied with limited sorts of preys in comparison with the Jeju toad. There appeared a difference in eating habits by month between the two populations; the feeding duration of the inland population was from May to October, but the Jeju population was from April to September. Among the kinds of prey taxa, Coleoptera and Hymenoptera were equally distributed to the two populations of Korean Fire-bellied toad for this research purpose during the survey period. The number of orders, predation frequency and the number of the prey taxa by one population prey were rather higher in the summer. Therefore, it is concluded that the most active period of predation of the Korean Fire-bellied toad is summer.
In the present study, prey preference of juvenile fishes was examined using an experimental approach. Zooplankton composition, as a prey of the fish, was evaluated by taking into account the species as well as body size of juveniles in the aquarium. The predation of juvenile fishes is known to be an important factor in changes of zooplankton communities. In some previous studies at the regulated Nakdong River, the collapse of large cladcoerans and an increase in the rotifer population by selective predation during spring and summer were observed. This study focused on the predation of juvenile fishes such as Hyporhamphus sajori, Rhinogobius brunneus, and Opsariichtys uncirostris amurensis on zooplankton community structure in mesocosm scale experiments. These fishes selected the cladoceran Moina micrura with highest individual preference value (Manly/Chesson index)among zooplankton prey in the experimental aquarium. When the size-selective prey preferences of the juvenile fish were compared, both small (body size <2 cm) and large (body size >2cm) juveniles of O. uncirostris positively selected M. micrura. In the outdoor experimental tanks, juvenile fishes consumed the cladoceran M. micrura, resulting in an high abundance of the rotifer, Polyarthra spp. The results suggest that juvenile fish predation may play an important role in regulating the zooplankton community structure by reducing the cladoceran density and increase of rotifers in the Nakdong River during spring and summer.
These studies were conducted to investigate the prey consumption and suppression of cotton aphid and green peach aphid by Chrysopa pallens Ramber as a predator. The 3$^{rd}$ instar of C. pallets fed on 29.8, 77.9, 133.6, and 155.7 individuals of apterous Aphis goussypii Glover a day at 17,22, 27, and 32$^{\circ}C$, respectively. A preovipositing female fed on 73.1 individuals, ovipositing female on 86.6 individuals, and adult male on 69.7 individuals of apterous Myzus persicae (Sulzer) a day at the 27$^{\circ}C$. The functional response curve of the larvae and adults of C. pallens to the densities of A. gossypii indicated Helling’s Type II: the consumption of prey by the C. pallens increased with the prey density but the consumption rate decreased. The attack rate of 3rd instar of C. pallens was the highest among the 2nd instar, 3$^{rd}$ instar, adult male and adult female, and handling time was the shortest. The critical ratio of the predator vs. the prey to effectively suppress the population of A. gossypii by releasing C. pallets eggs was 1 : 4 on red pepper and egg plant, and 1 : 3 on cucumber. Release of second larval stave of C. pallens at the ratio of 1 : 30 of the predator vs. the prey controlled satisfactorily A. gossypii on red pepper, and 1 : 20 on cucumber and tomato. The three-times introduction of the eggs of C. pallens was as effective as four applications of insecticides from mid-June to late September.r.
During the breeding season, both adults and immature Eurasian Oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus osculans) were observed to feed on prey, such as gastropods (Umbonium thomasi) and bivalves, at the tide water line around Yubu island in Korea. To determine differences in the foraging efficiency between the adult and immature birds, we recorded the feeding behavior using digiscoping with a telescope and a smartphone. We compared the pace, the prey search rate, the proportion of prey search techniques, the feeding success rate, the handling time, and the heads-up rate between the adult and immature birds. There were significant differences in the proportion of prey search techniques when gastropods were consumed and in the prey search rate and heads-up rate when bivalves were consumed but there were no significant differences in feeding success rates. Therefore, although the immature birds on Yubu Island were inferior to adults during the breeding season and they lacked the proficiency to locate prey, their overall foraging efficiency was similar to adults. This was considered to be due to the continuous eating of bivalves during the wintering season, which requires a high level of foraging efficiency.
