  • Massage therapy, which is a Seondosul treatment that was prevalent during the time of Goguryeo, has been propagated throughout the general regions of Jeolla and Chungcheong-do with Iksan and Namwon as the center by the residents of Goguryeo who moved down south. In particular, the fact that this therapy was used importantly in the limited boundaries of the general regions of Jeolla and Chungcheong-do has become a factor that enabled preservation of large amount of old formats of the early stage Seondosul treatment. Seondosul that has been passed down the generation continued to function as a folklore remedy in the form of traditional massage therapy that is suitable for the humanistic natural environment of Korea. That is, treatment methods for generalized diseases in households have been used continuously from the ancient society to the modern society in Korea.

  • The appropriate level of irrigation for turfgrasses is vital to the performance of the turfgrass as well as conservation of water. Linear gradient irrigation system (LGIS) facilitates long-term study of turf performance under continuous irrigation gradients at extreme ends of the irrigation scale. The objectives of this study were to: a) determine the minimum irrigation requirements and relative drought resistance in three warm season turfgrasses; and b) evaluate the medium to long-term effects of irrigation levels on turf persistence, weed invasion, and susceptibility to diseases. Results suggest that grasses differed in drought resistance and persistence under variable irrigation regimes. Irrigation (Ep) required for consistent acceptable turf quality for respective grasses was Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis (61%), Zoysia matrella L. Merr (73%), and Stenotaphrum secundatum 'Palmetto' (86%). Brown patch infection was most prevalent in Stenotaphrum secundatum 'Palmetto' at 12 and 125% Ep irrigation. Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis and Zoysia matrella L. Merr were better able to adapt to the various irrigation regimes, and this ability allowed these species to resist drought, and maintain turf coverage which in turn, kept weeds and the occurrence of diseases at bay. Ranking these grasses for their drought tolerance abilities showed that Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis had the most outstanding resistance against drought, followed by Zoysia matrella L. Merr, and lastly, Stenotaphrum secundatum 'Palmetto'. Despite having the highest irrigation requirement, Stenotaphrum secundatum 'Palmetto' was still not able to maintain persistence at high irrigation regimes. Likewise, this grass also lost turf coverage at low irrigation levels.

  • Trousseau's syndrome is an unexplained thrombotic event that precedes the diagnosis of an occult visceral malignancy or appears concomitantly with the tumor. Upper extremity deep vein thrombosis is prevalent in patients with a central venous catheter. Furthermore, a peripheral intravenous injection may cause upper extremity deep vein thrombosis as well. However, a deep vein thrombosis has not been reported in the form of Trousseau's syndrome with a catastrophic clinical course triggered by a single peripheral intravenous injection. A 48-year-old man presented with a swollen left arm on which he was given intravenous fluid at a local clinic due to flu symptoms. Contrast computed tomgraphy scans showed thromboses from the left distal brachial to the innominate vein. The patient developed multiple cerebral infarctions despite anticoagulation treatment. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer by endoscopic biopsy to evaluate melena and had a persistently positive lupus anticoagulant. After recurrent and multiple thromboembolic events occurred with treatment, he died on day 20.

  • Methcillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has emerged as an important cause of community-acquired infections, which has been recently designated as community-associated (CA) MRSA. Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-negative multilocus sequence type 72 (ST72)-staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) type IV has been reported as the predominat CA-MRSA strain in Korea and is commonly associated with skin and soft tissue infections in addition to healthcare-associated pneumonia. However, community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) for this strain has not yet been reported. We hereby report two cases of CAP caused by PVL-negative ST72-SCCmec type IV strain in patients who had no risk factors for MRSA acquisition. While CA-MRSA infections are not yet prevalent in Korea, our cases suggest that CA-MRSA should be considered in cases of severe CAP, especially for cases associated with necrotizing pneumonia.

  • Purposes: Lung cancer is prevalent worldwide and improvements in timely and effective diagnosis are need. Pentraxin-3 as a novel serum marker for lung cancer (LC) has not been validated in large cohort studies. The aim of the study was to assess its clinical value in diagnosis and prognosis. Methods: We analyzed serum PTX-3 levels in a total of 1,605 patients with LC, benign lung diseases and healthy controls, as well as 493 non-lung cancer patients including 12 different types of cancers. Preoperative and postoperative data were further assessed in patients undergoing LC resection. The diagnostic performance of PTX-3 for LC and early-stage LC was assessed using receiver operating characteristics (ROC) by comparing with serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), cytokeratin 19 fragments (CYFRA 21-1). Results: Levels of PTX-3 in serum were significantly higher in patients with LC than all controls. ROC curves showed the optimum diagnostic cutoff was 8.03ng/mL (AUC 0.823, [95%CI 0.789-0.856], sensitivity 72.8%, and specificity 77.3% in the test cohort; 0.802, [95%CI 0.762-0.843], sensitivity 69.7%, and specificity 76.4% in the validate cohort). Similar diagnostic performance of PTX-3 was observed for early-stage LC. PTX-3 decreased following surgical resection of LC and increased with tumor recurrence. Significantly elevated PTX-3 levels were also seen in patients with non-lung cancers. Conclusions: The present data revealed that PTX-3 was significantly increased in both tissue and serum samples in LC patients. PTX-3 is a valuable biomarker for LC and improved identification of patients with LC and early-stage LC from those with non-malignant lung diseases.

  • This research was done to gain the health information in one of the target areas(rural area) of the Korea University Community Health Project, and to improve and standardize the methodology of the health interview survey. There were two types of questions;one was the simple open-ended question and the other was check list in the interview survey for a total of 1,406 inhabitants. And so the result obtained from the above survey was analysed. The results as follows; 1) The morbidity rate in general was 11.2% by simple open-ended question and 32.5% by check list during recent 20 days in interview method. 2) Women had higher morbidity rate in both kinds of method. 3) The most prevalent diseases in the interview method using check list were the ones of the musculo-skeletal system and connective tissue (22.5%), and diseases of the respiratory system (19.8%) and digestive system (13.7%) were in order of frequency. 4) By the position in the family, housewives had highest morbidity rate in the interview method unrespectedly, and the reason seemed that the respondents were houseweives themselves and the morbidity rate was the one by spell not by person. But morbidity rate by the socio-economic status had no significant difference in both methods. 5) The agreement rate on simple open-ended question and check list was 72.5%, but if limiting respondents themselves only, the rate was falled to 54%. 6) The morbidities were diverse in the review of the results of previous morbidity surveies, but the morbidity rate was higher and less variable in case of using check list and getting the replies individually than using simple open-ended question and proxy respondents.

  • Lung cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers and it has the highest mortality of all forms of cancers. Although surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are routinely used for the treatment of lung cancer treatment, little progress has been made in the treatment of this condition over the past 20 years. The histological subtype of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) accounts for approximately 30% of all lung cancer patients. Spontaneous regression of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCL) is an extremely rare phenomenon. Spontaneous regression of cancer (SR) is defined as a complete or partial, temporary or permanent disappearance of all or at least some the relevant parameters of soundly diagnosed malignant disease without any medical treatment or with treatment that is considered inadequate to produce the resulting regression.

  • Background: Skin biopsy is the method to assist clinicians to make definite dermatological diagnosis which further helps in holistic management. Skin cancers are relatively rare clinical diagnosis in developing countries like Nepal, but the prevalence is on rise. Objectives: To investigate the profile of skin biopsies and frequencies and pattern of skin cancers in a tertiary care centre of Western Nepal. Materials and Methods: The materials consisted of 434 biopsies (1.37%) out of 31,450 OPD visits performed in the Department of Dermatology, Manipal Teaching Hospital, Pokhara, Nepal, during the period of Dec 2011-Nov 2014. Data were collected and analyzed using SPSS-16 with reference to incidence, age, sex, race and clinical and histopathological features. Results: The commonest disorders observed in biopsies were papulosquamous lesions, skin tuberculosis of different types, benign skin tumors, leprosy, collagen and fungal diseases. Viral diseases were rarely seen, probably due to straight forward clinical diagnosis. Dermatological malignancies accounted for 55/434 (12.67%) of biopsies. Skin disorders in general were commoner in females 280/434 (64%), including malignancies 32/55(58.2%). Mean age of patients with skin cancer was 54.5 years. Facilities for proper laboratory investigation of dermatological disorders will improve the quality of life. Conclusions: The most prevalent lesion in skin biopsies was papulosquamous disorders followed by skin tuberculosis of different types. Dermatological malignancy constituted 55/434 (12.67%) cases. The prevalence of skin malignancy is on rise in Nepalese society probably due to increase in life expectancy and better diagnostic services.

  • Leading soybean cultivars such as Kwanggyo, Yugu No.3, Dongbugtae, Gangrim, and Eundaedu were heavily diseased by a virus in Korea. The disease was most severe in the northern provinces where soybean mosaic virus also occurrs, but the disease has also been observed in other provinces where soybean diseases are less prevalent. The disease symptoms were similar to bud blight caused by tobacco ringspot virus; but this was not confirmed in inoculation tests on indicator plants and serological experiments. There were some differences in varietal susceptibility to the disease, with symptom variation depending on the soybean cultivar and source of inoculm. Disease symptoms on infected soybean plants were mottling and necrosis. The present results, therefore, indicate some strains of SMV or a mixture of legume viruses may or may not be responsible for the disease.

  • This study was designed to observe the problems in performing the screening for early detection of lung cancer, and the degree to which regular radiographic and cytologic screening contributes to the early detection of lung cancer in asymptomatic volunteers. Through mass media campaign, 346 male volunteers had registered to receive radiographic and sputum cytologic screening every four months. Initial chest x-ray examination showed 83 cases of lesions suggesting tuberculosis. Among them, two cases were proved to be active tuberculosis. The rate of long-term follw-up over two years was about 15%. The screening tests detected two cases of lung cancer, one prevalent lung cancer by sputum cytologic examination, and the other by sputum cytologic examination during follow-up. So the prevalence rate of lung cancer was 0.28% and the incidence rate was 3.1/1,000 person·years. Both were localized lesions; ie, American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stage I and occult lung cancer, respectively. With these results, we suggest that the maintenance of long-term follow-up seems to be the most important problem to evaluate the effect of early detection of lung cancer. It would require thorough explanation of the risk of smoking in lung cancer and the wide public education on the government's base. It should be done at several hospitals simultaneously to include a large population in the study. Although we couldn't determine the effect of screening for the early detection of lung cancer in this report, new diagnostic procedure other than chest x-ray and sputum cytologic examination would be required, according to the literature, to reduce the mortality of lung cancer by the screening program for the early detection of lung cancer.
