  • The existing Double T-Beams have been positively constructed in America and Europe due to their elegant appearance and simple section shapes. However, there are some problems; thery are relatively weak in the structural resistance, and need to use somewhat limited and complicated construction methods. In this paper, new composite beams made of concrete and steel are proposed, by taking adventage of their merits in an effort to solve thess controversial problems. In addition, feasibility is presented in developing composite Double T-Beams by introducing pre-stressing forces as well to enhance structural safety.

  • This study investigates the effect of the outrigger wall reinforced with post-tension on reducing differential column shortening. Since the outrigger wall is a concrete structure, the effect of its long-term behavior should be considered. The long-term behavior of the outrigger wall increases differential column shortening and decreases the shear force acting on the outrigger. When the stiffness of the outrigger becomes small, the effect of its long-term behavior increases. Furthermore, a method of reinforcing with post-tension to reduce differential column shortening is proposed. Following the analysis, it was confirmed that the post-tension method shows a significant reduction in the differential column shortening. This study shows that the effect of the outrigger wall reinforced with post-tension on reducing differential column shortening increases with the prestressing force of tendon.

  • Recently prestressed concrete bridges are generally used instead of reinforced concrete. PSC is more durable than RC because it can reduce crack problems, reinforcement corrosion, leakage and carbonation etc. And also PSC is more effective because there is no crack in tension area, and the entire concrete section is considered in section analysis. And it can reduce section size because vertical component by prestressing force can reduce the shear force. However, using high strength concrete can increase the self weight of bridge because of it's higher density. So the hollowed PPC girder with light weight aggregate can be a alternative. In this study the hollowed PPC girder with light weight aggregate is designed and the performance of hollowed PPC girder is evaluated by experimental tests as well as numerical analysis. As a result, The hollowed PPC girder of light aggregate behaved fully elastically under service load of 110kN, and the plastic behavior was showed after elastic behavior through experimental test, and it can be also estimated by numerical analysis.

  • Considering uncertainties of random input data, it is more reasonable to use probabilistic method than the conventional deterministic method for the design of structures or for the assessment of the responses of structures, which are designed as safe even under extreme loads. Therefore, to assess the quantitative effects of the constructed cable stayed bridge by the input random variables, a sensitivity analysis is studied. Using perturbation method, an analysis program is developed for the iterative probabilistic finite element analyses and sensitivity analyses of the cable stayed bridge, except the initial shape analysis. Monte-Carlo Simulations were used for the verification of the developed program. The results of sensitivity analysis shows the governing effects of external loads. Because the results also provide the sensitive effects of the stiffness of members and the magnitudes of prestressing force of cables, the developed

  • Recently, a high-strength strand of 2400 MPa was developed using domestic technologies. In 2011, KS D 7002 was revised to cover the newly developed high-strength strands to support their practical usage. Presently, however, discussions and evaluations are not sufficient on the mechanical properties of the strands and their performance in structural members. Also, there were no detailed reviews on the need to revise the current design code for practical use of the high-strength strands. In this study, flexural behavior of a member with the high-strength strands was estimated through sectional analysis and a review and comparison of the domestic and foreign design codes were conducted considering the analysis results. Also, the need for the revision of the design code was discussed. Such discussion especially focused on the estimation of the stress in strand, which related with various issues such as determination methods for yield point of strands, time-dependent loss of prestressing force, estimation of stress in strand at member failure, and net strain limit for ductile failure of member. The discussion revealed that some parts in the design code need a revision and the further studies are required.

  • As an alternative to conventional prestressed concrete (PSC) girders, various types of PSC girders are either under development or have already been applied in bridge structures. Incrementally prestressed concrete girder is one of these newly developed girders. According to the design concept, these new types of PSC girders have the advantages of requiring less self-weight while having the capability of longer spans. However, the dynamic interaction between bridge superstructures and passing trains is one of the critical issues concerning these railway bridges designed with more flexibility. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate modal parameters of newly designed bridges before doing dynamic analyses. In the present paper, a 25 meters long full scale PSC girder was fabricated as a test specimen and modal testing was carried out to evaluate modal parameters including natural frequencies and modal damping ratios at every prestressing stage. During the modal testing, a digitally controlled vibration exciter as well as an impact hammer is applied, in order to obtain precise frequency response functions and the modal parameters are evaluated varying with construction stages. Prestressed force effects on changes of modal parameters are analyzed at every incremental prestressing stage. With the application of reliable properties from modal experiments, estimation of dynamic performances of PSC girder railway bridges can be obtained from various parametric studies on dynamic behavior under the passage of moving train. Dynamic displacements, impact factor, acceleration of the slab, end rotation of the girder, and other important dynamic performance parameters are checked with various speeds of the train.

  • Precast concrete (PC) structure is one of the type of the structures which is made in a facility prior to installing it to a construction field. The contact surfaces between two PC structures should be treated for obtaining enough binding force by inducing prestressing force. However, in the many cases, the contact surface causes the crack and leakage of water. These cracks and water leakage can cause the corrosion of the rebar, and the corrosion of the rebar can severely reduce the long-term durability. In this study, the SMA wire connector is suggested to solve the problem with the contact surfaces between two PC structures. The pull-out resistance of the suggested SMA wire connector is evaluated by conducting the tests to find the effect of the number of wires, shape of connector part, and shape memory effect. As a result of this study, the empirical formula is suggested to estimate the pull-out resistance related with the effects of the shape of the connector, shape memory effect, and the adhesive force. The validity between the estimated pull-out resistance and the measured value is confirmed.

  • Since the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks in 2001, terror, military attack, or man-made disaster caused impact, explosion, and fire accident have frequently occured on civil infrastructures. However, structural behavior researches on major Prestressed Concrete (PSC) infrastructures such as bridges, tunnels, Prestressed Concrete Containment Vessel (PCCVs), and LNG tanks under extreme loading are significantly lacking. Especially, researches on possible secondary fire scenarios after terror, bombing, collision of vehicles and vessels on concrete structures have not been performed domestically where most of the past researches related to extreme loadings on structures focused on an independent isolated extreme loading scenario. Due to the outcry of public concerns and anxiety of potential terrorist attacks on major infrastructures and structures, a study is urgently needed at this time. Therefore, in this study, the bi-directional prestressed concrete $1400{\times}1000{\times}300mm$ panels applied with 430 kN prestressing force using unbonded prestressing thread bars were experimentally evaluated under impact, fire, and impact-fire combined loadings. Due to test site restrictions, impact tests were performed with 14 kN impactor with drop heights of 10m and 3.5 m to evaluate impact resistance capacity. Also, fire and impact-fire combined loading were tested using RABT fire loading curve. The measured residual strength capacities of PSC and RC specimens applied with impact, fire, impact-fire combined loadings were compared with the residual strength capacity of undamaged PSC and RC specimens for evaluation. The study results can be used as basic research data for related research areas such as protective design and numerical simulation under extreme loading scenarios.

  • Recently, several prestressed concrete box girder bridges have experienced severe cracking along the tendon path when prestress force has been transferred to the anchorage zone. The purpose of the present study is therefore to explore characteristics of the local stress distribution, to study the effects of section geometry of anchorage zones, i.e., tendon inclination, tendon eccentricity and concrett. cover thickness anti to develop recornrncnd;itions for specific design criteria for post~tensioned a:lchorage zones. 7'0 accomplish these objectives, a cc~mprehen sive nonlinar finite element study has been conducted. From this study, realistic forrnulas for crackinq and ultimate load capacities are proposed. 'These equations reasonably well predict the crackinq and ultimate loads of prestressed concrete anchorage zones.
