There are growing needs to produce relatively high purity (99.0% or higher) oxygen at low cost. For small scale production, both pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and membrane process are competitve and less expensive or more convient than well known crygenic fractionation technology. A continuous membrane colume (CMC) combined with a PSA oxygen generator can be employed to produce high purity oxygen continuosly. The oxygen-enriched gas generated by a PSA unit, with a concentration of 93-94%, is fed to the CMC that consists of three modules of poly(imide) hollow fibers. Several experiments were conducted by varying parameters, such feed flow rate, transmenbrane pressure drop, stage cut, and feed location in order to obtain a high oxygen concentration above 99.0%. A two-series unit mode was also employed with CMC operation to optimize the given membrane area.
The effects of activated-carbon (AC) packing length on the Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) performance was investigated for the hydrogen separation from the multicomponent mixture gas. Linear driving force model was used to describe mass transfer between two phase and coupled Langmuir isotherm was used for each component as a nonlinear adsorption isotherm. When two adsorbents with a different adsorption capacity were packed consecutively in one bed, it is very important to determine the packing ratio of zeolite to activated carbon affecting the purity and recovery of the product. The activated carbon packing length in adsorption tower of 120 cm was determinated by the ending point of $CO_2$ contration. The optimum length of an activated carbon layer was 65 cm for production of high-purity hydrogen.

In this study, PSA, known as the most economic process, was used to recover $CO_2$ from the power-plant flue gas. Activated carbon and zeolite molecular sieve 13X were used as adsorbent. Activated carbon has been deemed inadequated adsorbent for separating $CO_2$ from the flue gas. However, highly concentrated $CO_2$ could be obtained as a product on the activated carbon adsorbent using the new operating cycle modifying the rinse step. Also, the recovery of $CO_2$ was improved using double-layered adsorption column packed with the activated carbon and the zeolite 13X simultaneously. Adsorption column was filled with the activated carbon in the feed-end side, and the zeolite 13X in the product-end side. The recovery of $CO_2$ increased about 40% with only 25% zeolite, and increased 67% with 50% zeolite at the experimental conditions of 13% $CO_2$ concentration, 10 SLPM flow rate and 2.2 atm adsorption pressure.
A two-column six-step pressure swing adsorption(PSA) process was to study separation of hydrogen from hydrogen and methane($60_{vol}%/40_{vol}%$) binary system onto activated carbon adsorbent. The effects of the feed gas pressure, the feed flowrate and the P/F(purge to feed) ratio on the process performance were evaluated. The cyclic steady-states of PSA process were reached to after 15 cycles. $H_2$ purity increases according as the P/F ratio and pressure increase and the feed flow rate decreases; however, $H_2$ recovery shows an opposite phenomena to the purity. PSA process simulation studied to find optimum operation condition. In the results, 22 LPM feed flowrate, 11 atm adsorption pressure and 0.10 P/F ratio might be optimal values to obtain more than 75% recovery and 99% purity hydrogen. In this study was non-isothermal and non-adiabatic model considering linear driving force(LDF) model and Langmuir-Freundlich adsorption isotherm considered to compare between prediction and experimental data.

For the treatment of wastewaters generated from beer industry and petrochemical company with high organic and nitrogen contents, laboratory scale of A/O Pure-Oxygen Biofilm (POB) process was developed and studied by means of the comparative economic analysis with extended aeration process. When the wastewater of beer company was initially treated by the A/O POB process in the ranges of 70 to 150 mg TOC/L diluted with tap water, higher than 92% of TOC removal was accomplished in the all ranges. In case of petrochemical wastewater, the initial TOC removal was as low as 52%, though, it increased to 86% after 32 days of operation and also the TKN removal marked 71% after 27 days. Continuous high removal rates were monitored in both the TOC and TKN parameters during the experimental period. Due to the cost for PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) setting and biomass supporting media installation, the initial construction cost of A/O POB process was 2.9 times higher than that of extended aeration process. However, the advantages such as low sludge production, no need for sludge recycling and low energy consumption allow the A/O POB process to have 2.5 times lower operation and maintenance costs. Consequently, in the long term of operation, it is likely that A/O POB process would show higher performance as well as cost effectiveness compared to extended aeration process.

Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process using CMS as an oxygen purifier was developed to produce high purity oxygen over $99\%$ with high productivity. The cyclic performances such as purity, recovery, and productivity of PSA process were compared experimentally and theoretically under the non-isothermal condition. A binary ($O_2$/Ar 95:5 vol.$\%$) and two kinds of ternary ($O_2/Ar/N_2$ 95:4:1 and 90:4:6 vol.$\%$) mixtures were used as feed gases. The developed process with the consecutive two blowdown steps produced the oxygen with $99.8\%$ purity and $56\%$ recovery from $95\%$ oxygen containing feed. However, in the feed with $90\%$ oxygen, the $O_2$ Purity was decreased up to $97.3\%$. In addition, because the cyclic performances of the suggested process was significantly affected by the diffusion rate, the non-isothermal model with the the modified LDF model was applied for the process simulation. The concentration-dependent rate parameter of the applied rate model was incorporated with the Langmuir isotherm.

The cryogenic, pressure swing adsorption and membrane methods have been used to separate air into nitrogen and oxygen. The air separation membrane is made of the polymers, of which manufacturing process is complicate and it causes a little high production cost. Polymer membrane has temperature limit in usage and low durability even at moderate temperature. Therefore, inorganic membranes have been studied for years. As formation of unit alumino-silicate membrane, unit cells of membrane were made with a few coating methods. In this study the dipping of substrate into sols, application of vacuum to the opposite side of substrate with coating and rotating of the substrate in the sols were found as good coating memthods to make a uniform coating and to control the thickness of membrane. The membrane coats were examined by SEM and XRD. The sample ESZl-1 was compared with those of samples that prepared by another method. The present developed coating methods could be applied to the various types of zeolite membrane formation, that is A- X-, Y- ZSM- and MCM-types of membranes. Also these membrane forming methods could be applied to formation of catalyst absorbed zeolite membrane, of which zeolite absorb the catalytic metals. The product obtained from these coating methods could be applied to the industrial gas and liquid phase catalytic reaction and separation processes.
Polymeric gas separation membrane is the fastest growing field in membrane separation process. Polymeric gas separation membrane process is competitive compare to cryogenic process and pressure swing adsorption process. Aromatic polymer materials such as polysulfones, polypheneylene oxides, polycarbonates and polyimides have been used for gas separation. Recently, glassy polymer likes polyimide in aromatic polymers has been developed for achievement of high selectivity and permeability coefficients. The accurate understanding on a type and structure of polymer material is very important, because the factor that polymer material affect gas separation property. In the study, trend and the development direction on synthesis and permeation properties of polyimide is confirmed.
Biogas is a renewable fuel from anaerobic digestion of organic matters such as sewage sludge, manure and food waste. Raw biogas consists mainly of methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and water. Biogas may also contain other impurities such as siloxanes, halogenated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons. Efficient power technologies such as fuel cell demand ultra-low concentration of containments in the biogas feed, imposing stringent requirements on fuel purification technology. Biogas is upgraded from pressure swing adsorption after biogas purification process which consists of water, $H_2S$ and siloxane removal. A polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell power plant is designed to operate on reformate produced from upgraded biogas by steam reformer.
