  • In this research, GTA overlay welding system is developed for inside of straight pipes in various diameter. It can be applied to oil, ship building and plant industry, especially pipes connected to pressure vessels, for the purpose of cost reduction by cladding inside of pipes with corrosion and heat resistant alloys such as stainless steel or Inconel. Developed system consists of GTA power source, torch, wire feeding system, automatic arc length adjusting device, CCD camera and cooling unit. Two types of pipe inside overlay welding system are developed. One is for maximum 3m pipe length with 3 inch ~ 12 inch pipe outer diameter. Another type can be applied to maximum 12m pipe length with 7 ~ 24 inch OD. Developed system successfully produced inside cladded pipe and the results are shown through cross sectional images of the pipes.

  • High heat-resistant Al-Fe-V-Si and Al-Fe-V-Si-X rapidly solidified powder metallurgy (RS P/M) alloys have been developed under well-controlled high purity argon gas atmosphere. The $Al_{90.49}Fe_{6.45}V_{0.68}Si_{2.38}$ (at. %) RS P/M alloy exhibited high elevated-temperature strength exceeding 300 MPa and good ductility with elongation of 6 % at 573 K. Reduction of $H_2O$ partical pressure in P/M processing atmosphere led to improvement in mechanical properties of the powder-consolidated alloys under elevated-temperature service conditions. Ti addition to the Al-Fe-V-Si conduced to enhancement of the strength at room temperature. The tensile yeild strength and ultimate strenght were 545 MPa and 722 MPa, respectively.

  • In this study, densified 4D carbon/carbon composites were made from carbon fiber and coal tar pitch through the process of pressure impregnation and carbonization and then followed by carbonization and graphitization. To improve the oxidative resistance of the prepared carbon/carbon composites, the surface of carbon/carbon composites was coated on SiC by the pack cementation method. The SiC coated layer was created by depending on the constitution of pack powder, and reaction time of pack-cementation. The morpology of crystalline and texture of these SiC coated carbon/carbon composites were investigated by XRD, SEM/EDS observation. So the coating mechanism of pack-cementation process was proposed. The oxidative res istance were observed through the air oxidation test, and then the optimal condition of pack cementation was found by them. Besides, the oxidative mechanism of SiC formed was proposed through the observation of SiC coated surface, which was undergone by oxidation test.

  • Ceramic-Metal Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) are of great interest for application as Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) or Wear Resistant Coating (WRC). Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) is a promising techniques for time-saving consolidation of laminated/graduated powder systems: SPS is a pressure-assisted electrical sintering method which directly applies a pulsed DC current as heat source. In the present work, production of $Al_2O_3-Ni$ FGMs by means of Spark Plasma Sintering is considered; effect of sintering condition on density, hardness and fracture toughness is studied. Problems correlated to this new processing technology are discussed.

  • Clostridium botulinum spores are widely distributed in nature. Type A and proteolytic type B bacteria produce heat-resistant spores that are primarily involved in most of the food-borne botulism outbreaks associated with low-acid canned foods. Food-borne botulism results from the consumption of food in which C. botulinum has grown and produced neurotoxin. Growth and toxin production of type A and proteolytic type B in canned foods can be prevented by the use of thermal sterilization alone or in combination with salt and nitrite. The hazardousness of C. botulinum in low-acid canned foods can also be reduced by preventing post-process contamination and introducing hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) practices during production. Effectiveness of non-thermal technologies such as high pressure processing with elevated process temperatures on inactivation of spores of C. botulinum will be discussed.

  • The physical performance of high-strength concrete deteriorates when exposed to high temperatures such as fire. In particular, in the case of ultra-high-strength concrete, there is a high possibility of explosion due to internal water pressure and thermal expansion due to the tight internal structure. In this paper, a fire resistance certification test was conducted for field application of ultra-high-strength fire-resistant concrete, and the fire resistance performance (temperature rise of main rebar) was compared according to the structural concrete cover thickness. As a result, when the covering thickness was 40 mm, three structures did not meet the certification standards, and when the covering thickness was 50 mm, all structures met the fire resistance certification standards.

  • To evaluate the pressure-resistant performance of underwater equipment, hyperbaric chamber test facility which can make the hydrostatic pressure is used. In this test, strain gage is generally applied to measure the strain of object under test is suitable for measuring a tiny deformation, but it can not measure a large deformation. Thus this paper suggests a method to estimate the over -order deformation of object under test by the image processing with the image acquired from underwater camera in the hydrostatic test. The main procedure of suggested method comprises the first step to find significant points by processing the image two dimensionally and the second step to estimate a deformation of object under test by tracking the motion of these points. If completing the remained research which is estimating the deformation and comparing it with a real one, it can be a method to measure the over -order deformation of object under test.

  • Compared to Butane tank, the propane tank should have a higher compressive strength due to its higher vapor pressure. In this study, a theoretical analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of change in the geometry of bottom plate on the mechanical property of tank, and an experiment was also carried out to observe the propensity of the deformation and failure of the vessel using hydraulic pressurizing device. The compressive strength of the vessel was observed to improve 1.5-2.5 MPa as the curvature of the bottom plate was decreased 62 mm and the thickness of the bottom plate was increased 0.25 mm. This study are expected to provide viable information conducive to achieve on-going development of a small vessel for the pressurized propane gas.

  • c-BN(cubic boron nitride) is known to have extremely high hardness next to diamond, as well as very high thermal and chemical stability. The c-BN in the form of film is useful for wear resistant coatings where the application of diamond film is restricted. However, there is less practical application because of difficult control of processing variables for synthesis of c-BN film as well as unclear mechanism on formation of c-BN. Therefore, in the present study, the structural characterization of c-BN thin film were investigated using $B_4C$ target in r.f. magnetron sputtering system as a function of processing variables. c-BN films were coated on Si(100) substrate using $B_4C$ (99.5% purity). The mixture of nitrogen and argon was used for carrier gas. The deposition processing conditions were changed with substrate bias voltage, substrate temperature and base pressure. Fourier transform infrared microscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to analyze crystal structures and chemical binding energy of the films. In the case of the BN film deposited at room temperature, c-BN was formed in the substrate bias voltage range of -400 V~ -600 V. Less c-BN fraction was observed as deposition temperature increased and more c-BN fraction was observed as base pressure increased.

  • The Inconel 718 alloy is a well-known super-heat-resistant alloy and a difficult-to-cut material. Inconel 718 with excellent corrosion and heat resistance is used in harsh environments. However, the heat generated is not released owing to excellent physical properties, making processes (e.g., adhesion and thermal fatigue) difficult. Tool condition monitoring in machining is significant in reducing manufacturing costs. The cutting tool is easily broken and worn because of the material properties of Inconel 718. Therefore, tool management is required to improve tool life and machinability. This study proposes a method of predicting the tool wear with non-contacting sensors (e.g., IR thermometer for measuring the cutting temperature and a microphone for measuring the sound pressure level in machining). The cutting temperature and sound pressure fluctuation according to the tool condition and cutting force are analyzed using experimental data. This experiment verifies the effectiveness of the non-contact measurement signals in tool condition monitoring.
