Finite Element Analysis on the Stress and Displacement Characteristics of Oil Pipe (오일 파이프의 응력 및 변형거동특성에 관한 유한요소해석)

  • This paper presents the stress and displacement characteristics of oil pipe using the finite element analysis. Displacement in axial direction and von Mises stress of a pipe were analyzed with three design factors, which are the pipe thickness, the corrugation pitch and the corrugation height, under uniform oil pressure. The FE computed results are presented between a conventional round pipe and a rectangular pipe, which is manufactured in this study. The computed FE results show that maximum displacement in axial direction and von Mises stress of pipe are increased linearly as the oil pressure increases. Also, they are increased linearly as the corrugation pitch, corrugation height and pipe thickness increases. von Mises stress of a rectangular pipe at the edge increases sharply compared with that of a conventional round pipe. Therefore, the strength of rectangular pipe is superior to that of a conventional round pipe.

  • A numerical study has been conducted to investigate the effect of tube arrangement on the heat transfer and the pressure loss for cross flow heat exchangers. By defining a transverse deviation factor, ${\varepsilon}_t=l_T/S_T$, the flow pattern and the heat transfer characteristics are compared for selected ${\varepsilon}_t$ values of 0.0(in-lined), 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5(staggered) by using a commercial software. Computational domain includes 1 pitch in the transverse direction and 5 pitches in the flow direction with due periodic boundary conditions.

  • Flow fields in two-dimensional plane channels with thin obstacles("baffles and blocks") mounted symmetrically in the vertical direction and periodically in the streamwise direction are studied numerically to understand how various geometric conditions influence the critical Reynolds number and pressure drop. Changing BR(the ratio of channel to baffle interval) from 1:1 to 1.5, we computed the critical Reynolds number and pressure drop. Especially when BR is 1:3, at which the critical Reynolds number turned out to be minimal, we added blocks in the geometry in order to study their destabiliting effects on the flows.

  • The shrinkages of injection molded parts are different in molding operational conditions, resins and additives. The shrinkage of injection molded part for crystalline polymer, PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) has been studied for various operational conditions of injection molding and content of additives. Mica was used as a additive to PBT to examine the part shrinkage according to the mica content. The part shrinkages of mica contained PBT decreased as mica content increases. Higher injection temperature and injection pressure resulted in a lower shrinkage. As mold temperature increases the part shrinkage decreased. The part shrinkage of flow direction was less than that of the perpendicular direction to the flow for both pure and mica contained PBT. However the shrinkage difference between flow and perpendicular to flow directions decreased as mica content increased.

  • This paper presents a design method for the structural-acoustic coupled radiator that can emit sound in the desired direction. A coupled system that has a finite space and a semi-infinite space separated by two flexible walls and an opening is considered. An objective function is selected to maximize radiation power on a main axis and minimize a side lobe level. To get initial values, prediction of a pressure distribution on field points and radiation pattern of the structural-acoustic coupling system is shown at a coupled-resonant frequency. Three different optimization methods are adapted to design the coupled radiator. Pressure and intensity distribution of the designed radiator is presented.

Transverse permeability measurement of a circular braided preform in liquid composite molding

  • In liquid composite molding (LCM), composites are produced by impregnation of a dry preform with liquid resin. The resin flow through the preform is usually described by Darcy's law and the permeability tensor must be obtained for filling analysis. While the resin flow in the thickness direction can be neglected for thin parts, the resin flow in the transverse direction is important for thicker parts. However, the transverse permeability of the preform has not been investigated frequently. In this study, the transverse permeability was measured experimentally for five different fiber preforms. In order to verify the experimental results, the measured transverse permeability was compared with numerical results. Five different fiber mats were used in this study: glass fiber woven fabric, aramid fiber woven fabric, glass fiber random mat, glass fiber braided preform, and glass/aramid hybrid braided preform. The anisotropic braided preforms were manufactured by using a three dimensional braiding machine. The pressure was measured at the inlet and outlet positions with pressure transducers.

  • Dynamic fracturing of anisotropic granite was investigated by SHPB (Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar). Energy absorption during the test and maximum stress were increased as strain rate increased. Maximum stresses in every direction were dependent on the strain rate but not so sensitive to anisotropy. Elastic wave velocity was decreased as strain rate increased and dependent on strain rate in every direction. Especially, elastic wave velocity decreased more rapidly in a strong rock.

  • The failed tube received for this study has been used for approximately 10 year at $330^{\circ}C$ in a steam production boiler tube was fractured in the transversed direction to tube length, and fracture mode was typically intergranulas type without the plastic deformation. The fracture surface was covered by the oxide scale formed from the intermal high pressure steam at high temperature. The microstructure was not nearly thermal-degraded during the service. From this result, we can conclude that the oxide film was proferentialy formed into the grainboundary and this grainboundary oxide film was brittle-fractured by the thermal stress in the longitudinal direction to the tube brittle intergranular fracture mode.

  • The V-I characteristics of low pressure discharges occurring between each of three kinds of anode and a fixed hot cathode in several bi-cusp magnetic fields are investigated. The results are different from those in non-magnetic fields as follows` First, both breakdown and maintaining potentials of low pressure discharges in the fields are rather depend on the arrangement of the directions of magnetic lines of force and the directions between two electrodes than on the distance between two electrodes or the size of the electrodes. Second, the maintaining potentials of the discharges in the fields are lower than those in the non-fields, and the electrical conductivity in the fields are better than those in the non-fields. Third, the breakdown potertials in the fields when the direction of magnetic lines of force is perpendicular with the direction of discharging path between two electrodes are higher than those when the two directions are parallel with each other. But the maintaining patentials in the fields are shown the contrary phenomena with before. This results are particularily conspicuous as the separatrix of the fields pass across the discharging path between two electrodes.

  • When navigating in or near an area of restricted visibility it is necessary to be heard the whistle bell and/or the siren of lighthouses or ships at times. Even though we can get the brief informations about the property of sound the direction and range of a sound radiator it is not easy to get the accurate informations for decision making. generally the audio frequency is known as 16-20,000Hz but the earshot is shorten and discrimination of sound is more difficult when there is some noise. The sound pressure is 60dB at the moment when human speaks 1 meter away. Usually the noise pressure in a silent room is 40dB and 60dB on the quiet street. In this study we suggest the basic algorithm to trace the direction and range of the source radiator using the signal received through not a physical sense but the microphone sensors and a series of signal of signal processing.
