  • The refractory-lined pipe is used to protect the system from high-temperature of the internal flow. The property of the refractory has an effect upon the stress analysis for fluid catalyst cracking(FCC) unit piping design. The equivalent elastic modulus and density considering steel and refractory must be applied in the stress analysis of the system. In the research, the theoretical method to obtain the value of the equivalent property is introduced and then the parametric analysis is carried out to understand the characteristic of the material properties.

  • SG-365 steel is an important material and used for manufacturing a pressure vessel which the gas piping. In this investigation, the elastic plastic fracture toughness of this material is evaluated by the unloading compliance method according to the ASTM E813-97 and E1152-97 method on the smooth and side groove 1CT specimens. The effect of smooth and side groove is studied on the elastic plastic fracture toughness. The side grooved specimen is very useful in estimation of the $J_{IC}$. It is much easier than the smooth specimen to the onset of the ductile tearing by the R curve method. Besides, it improves the accuracy of toughness values, decreases a phenomenon of the tunneling and shear lip by the side groove.

  • A failure evaluation diagram to evaluate fatigue fracture was developed. The relation between the fatigue limit and the threshold stress intensity factor for the short-cracked specimens of various materials including a piping carbon steel can be rationally predicted by the proposed method. It is shown that the coupled failure evaluation diagram for fatigue and ductile fracture is expecially useful for evaluation of the flaw tolerance as well as the margin of the safety of the pressure vessel and piping. Further, accumulation of fatigue data will be needed to construct an accurate fatigue failure evaluation diagram.

  • The restraint force is required for the accurate measurement and analysis to protect weldment from residual stress. Also, this residual stress caused by cracks in weldments is often observed in the weldments of large size nozzles or radial tanks after welding. This paper is preformed to evaluate the welding restraint forces using load cell with STS304 thin plate which is used as the pressure vessel steel in the industry field. As a result, as the welding currents are higher and the welding speeds are more slowly, the magnitude of restraint force in process of the flat plate welding shows to be more large.

  • The contents of a new book currently in preparation are described. The dearth of books in the field of nuclear materials has left both students in nuclear materials classes and professionals in the same field without a resource for the broad fundamentals of this important sub-discipline of nuclear engineering. The new book is devoted entirely to materials problems in the core of light-water reactors, from the pressure vessel into the fuel. Key topics deal with the $UO_2$ fuel, Zircaloy cladding, stainless steel, and of course, water. The restriction to LWR materials does not mean a short monograph; the enormous quantity of experimental and theoretical work over the past 50 years on these materials presents a challenge of culling the most important features and explaining them in the simplest quantitative fashion. Moreover, LWRs will probably be the sole instrument of the return of nuclear energy in electric power production for the next decade or so. By that time, a new book will be needed.

  • With the aging of nuclear reactors, embrittlement of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steel, as a consequence of routine operations, is highly probable. To ensure operational integrity and safety, prediction and mitigation of compromising damage, brought on by pressurized thermal shock (PTS) following an emergency procedure, is of utmost importance. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes can be employed to predict these events and have therefore been an acceptable method for such assessments. In this paper, CFD simulations of a density driven ECC state in the ROCOM facility are analyzed. Obtained numerical results are validated with the experimental measurements. Considerable attention is attributed to the boundary conditions and their influence, specifically outlet definitions, in order to determine and adequately replicate the non-active pumps in the facility. Consequent analyses focused on initial conditions as well as on the temporal discretization and inner iterations. Disparities due to different turbulent modelling approaches are investigated for standard RANS models. Based on observed trends for different cases, a definitive simulation setup has been established, results of which have been ultimately compared to the measurements.

  • Recently, the gas transportation system for CNG(Compressed Natural Gas) has been developed and several innovative approaches are presented from the aspects of commercial demand. In this study, a new type of 20ft container shape CNG tank with two and four cylinder intersections by using the intersecting spheres has been proposed. And the structural analysis of CNG tank with Mildsteel, API High Tensile Steel, Al-alloy and FRP has been carried out to compare the different types of pressure vessels of materials used. The analysis result shows that the proposed intersectional cylindrical type of CNG tank can be applied to the gas transportation system. And further study on the commercial analysis and associated equipments should be carried out for the practical applications.

  • A wet type scrubber for merchant vessel uses super austenitic stainless steels with pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of 40 or higher for operation in a harsh corrosive environment. However, it is expensive due to a high nickel content. Thus, electrochemical behavior and cavitation erosion characteristics of UNS S32750 as an alternative material were investigated. Microstructure analysis revealed fractions of ferritic and austenitic phases of 48% and 52%, respectively, confirming the existence of ferritic matrix and austenitic island. Potentiodynamic polarization test revealed damage at the interface of the two phases because of galvanic corrosion due to different chemical compositions of ferritic and austenitic phases. After a cavitation test, a compressive residual stress was formed on the material surface due to impact pressure of cavity. Surface hardness was improved by water cavitation peening effect. Hardness value was the highest at 30 ㎛ amplitude. Scanning electron microscopy revealed wave patterns due to plastic deformation caused by impact pressure of the cavity. The depth of surface damage increased with amplitude. Cavitation test revealed larger damage caused by erosion in the ferritic phase due to brittle fracture derived from different strain rate sensitivity index of FCC and BCC structures.
