Optimal design methodology of district metered area utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS를 이용한 상수관망 소블록 최적설계기법 개발)

  • District Metered Area (DMA) construction is one of the most cost effective alternatives for management of water loss (i.e., water leakage) and energy consumption (i.e., water pressure) in water distribution systems. Therefore, it's being implemented to numerous new and existing water distribution systems worldwide. However, due to the complexity of water distribution systems, especially large-scale and highly looped systems, it is still very difficult to define the optimal boundary of DMAs considering all the aspects of water distribution system management requirements. In this study, a DMA design methodology (or a DMA design model) was developed with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and hydraulic distribution system model to determine the optimal DMA boundary.

Comparative study on the behavior of soil fills on rigid acrylic and flexible geotextile containers

  • Comparative study has been performed to investigate the behavior of dredged fills on rigid (Model 1) and flexible (Model 2) containers. The study was focused on the sedimentation of soil fills and the development of total stresses. Model 1 is made of an acrylic cylinder and Model two is a scale-size geotextile tube. Results indicate that for rigid containers, significant decrease of the sediment height is apparent during the dewatering process. On the other hand, because the geotextile is permeable, the water is gradually dissipated during the filling process on flexible containers. Hence, significant loss in the tube height is not apparent during the duration of the test. Pressure spikes are apparent on rigid containers during the filling process which can be attributed to the confining effect due to hydrostatic pressure. For the flexible containers, the pressure readings gradually increases with time during the filling process and normalize at the end on the filling stage. No pressure spikes were apparent due to the gradual dissipation of pore water pressure.

  • A numerical investigation on the flame propagation and extinction in a micro combustor is described. Previous measurements of $H_2-air$ flame propagation in a submilimeter scale combustor exhibited significance of wall effects on burning velocity and extinction. The heat transfer to wall becomes important not only in the cooling of burnt gases but also during the flame ropagation, which has be by and large ignored in macro scale combustor calculations. In order to take the heat loss into account the combustion calculation, we developed a numerical code with a heat transfer model that was determined empirically from measured data. PISO algorithm was used for differencing of conservation equations. $H_2-air$ reaction was modeled with 10 species - 16 steps. Comparison with measured data showed good agreement in flame propagation speed. Also the pressure decrease after flame extinction was accurately predicted by the model. A further study is desirable for a better quenching model that can predict the quenching location.

  • This paper includes a development of a starting time prediction model for a derivative engine. For this derivative engine design, a new map expansion method, Modified Pump Scaling Law(MPS), has been applied and expand the maps to sub-idle range. From loss characteristics of the reference engine, loss models for the derivative engine have been developed considering different pressure, temperature, and engine configurations. Starting time predictions of the derivative engine shows preferable results comparing test results.

  • This study proposes a modified bifurcation model with a computational fluid analysis according to variation of a bifurcation geometry. FLUENT is used for a calculation of the head losses in case of a generation and a pumping. The pressure, velocity field and turbulent intensity are simulated in a bifurcation. With consideration about these flow properties, we propose the modified model to improve a flow efficiency and reduce a sound. The proposed model is able to cut down a head loss by 45% when a generation and 36% when a pumping.

A Study on the Influences of Noise Induced Hearing Loss to the Blood Pressure (소음성 청력손실이 혈압에 미치는 영향에 관한 조사연구)

  • For the purpose of evaluating the effect of noise induced hearing loss on the blood pressure, a cross-sectional study was conducted in 481 manufacturing industrial workers in Pusan area consisted of 275 workers from noisier plant (over 90 dB(A), high exposed group) and 206 workers from less noisy plant (below 85 dB(A), low exposed group) from April to Decepmber in 1985. The summarized results were as follows; 1) The degree of hearing loss according to the audible frequency was most notable in 4,000 Hz. 2) The prevalence of hypertension was 14.8% in total examined subjects. And also in 40 dB(A) hearing lost workers, there was no significant difference between high exposed group as 15.5% and low exposed group as 15.8%. 3) In 3 models analyzed by multiple regression technique to obtain the complexed extents of risk factors related to the diastolic blood pressure, especially model III which contain age, body mass index, smoking, alcohol and family history of hypertension, duration of work, noise exposure level and degree of hearing loss in high exposed group was most remarkable compared to the others. 4) The most potential predictor related to the diastolic pressure in high exposed group was the degree of hearing loss. And the next were body mass index, familial history of hypertension and age in order. But in the case of low exposed group, the potential predictors were body mass index, age and familial history of hypertension.

Performance Prediction and Analysis of a MEMS Solid Propellant Thruster (MEMS 고체 추진제 추력기의 성능예측 및 분석)

  • The performance of a MEMS solid propellant thruster was predicted and analyzed through internal ballistics model and CFD analysis. The nozzle throat was $416{\mu}m$, and the area ratio of the nozzle was 1.85. As a result of the internal ballistics model, chamber pressure increased up to 197 bar and the maximum thrust was 3,836 mN. In CFD analysis, the chamber pressure of the internal ballistics model was applied as the operating pressure, and the CFD model was divided into an adiabatic and a heat loss model. As a result, the maximum thrust of the adiabatic model was 14.92% lower than that of the internal ballistics model, and the effect of heat loss was insignificant.

  • An acoustical shape optimization problem is formulated for optimal design of a perforated reactive muffler with offset inlet/outlet. The mean transmission loss value in a target frequency range is maximized for an allowed pressure drop value between an inlet and an outlet. Partitions in the chamber are divided into several sub-partitions, whose lengths are selected as design variables. Each sub-partition has the same number of holes, whose sizes are equal. A finite element model is employed for acoustical and flow analyses. A gradient-based optimization algorithm is used to obtain an optimal muffler. The acoustical and fluidic characteristics of the optimal muffler are compared with those of a reference muffler. Validation experiment is carried out to support the effectiveness of our suggested method.

A Study on the Wear Characteristics and the Mechanism of KP-4M Steel for Plastic Molding (플라스틱성형용 KP-4M강의 마멸특성 및 이의 기구에 관한 연구)

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the dry wear characteristics and mechanism of KP-4M steel for plastic molding against SKD 61 hardened by heat treatment. The wear test was carried out under different conditions such as sliding speed, contact pressure, sliding distance, with frictional tester of pin on disc type. The wear loss on variation of sliding speed was little in lower speed range below 0.5 m/sec and in higher speed range above 1.5 m/sec,'but wear loss was high in intermediate speed range. The critical sliding speed, which showed the maximum value of specific wear rate, became lower with increased contact pressure. Increasing the contact pressure, the critical sliding distance Lcr which the wear mechanism changes from severe wear to mild wear was increased due to the decrease of oxidation reaction velocity. Through this study we suggested a model of generation and elimination process of wear debris of KP-4M steel for plastic molding.

Evaluation of Pumping Characteristics of High Strength Concrete using Continuous Pumping System

  • In the construction of tall-building, concrete pumping influences the success of the project. In order to establish pumping technology for high speed construction of tall building, study for quantitative evaluation of flow characteristics and pumpability should be conducted. So in this study, the characteristics including the inner pipe pressure, rheological properties of concrete and mortar through the continuous pumping test were evaluated. Then we analyzed the relations between rheological properties and pumpability. In the result of test, there are high correlations between the rheological characteristics which represented by yield stress and plastic viscosity and pressure loss with pipe length. Also, we estimated pressure loss according to conditions of concrete mix and pumping through the evaluation of inner pipe friction.
