  • In order to understand regional wind characteristics and to estimate offshore wind resources, a wind map of the Korean Peninsula was established using remote-sensing data from the satellite, U.S. NASA Quik SCAT which has been deployed for the Sea Winds Project since 1999. According to the linear regression result between the wind map data and in-situ marine-buoy data, the correlation factor was greatly improved up to 0.87 by blending the remote-sensing data of Quik SCAT with U.S. NCEP/NCAR CDAS reanalysis data to eliminate precipitation interference and to increase temporal resolution. It is found from the established wind map that the wind speed in winter is prominent temporally and the South Sea shows spatially high energy density over the wind class 6. The reason is deduced that the north-west winds through the Yellow Sea and the north-east winds through the East Sea derived by the low pressure developed in Japan are accelerated passing through the Korea Channel and formed high wind energy region in the South Sea; the same trends are confirmed from the statistical analysis of the meteorological observation data of KMA.

  • To identify the turbulent flow characteristics resulted from the swirl direction of a combustor with seven swirl injectors, a 3D Large Eddy Simulation(LES) was implemented. The combustor of concern is the LRE combustor, designed by Aerospace Combustion Laboratory of Georgia Institute of Technology. The seven-clockwise-swirl-injectors combustor produces stronger flow interference among injectors, specially obvious tangential velocity near the wall, than the combustor with four-clockwise and three-counterclockwise swirl injectors. In addition, pressure fluctuations in the combustor with seven-clockwise-swirl-injectors was more amplified.

  • Recently, low energy ion beam irradiation has been adopted for surface modification. Low energy ion beam irradiation has many advantages in polymer engineering such as weak damage, good adhesion, noticeably-enhanced wettability(less than 15 degree), good reproducibility and so on. In this experiment, chemical reactions between free radicals and environment gas species have been investigated using angle-resolved XPS and TRIM code. In the case of low ion beam energy (around 1 keV), energy loss in polymer is mainly originated from atomic collisions instead of electronic interference. Atomic collisions could generated displaced atoms and free radicals. Cold cathode-ion source equipped with 5cm convex grid was used in an O2 environment. Base and working pressure were 5$\times$10-6 and 2.3$\times$10-4 Torr. Flow rates of argon and oxygen were fixed at 1.2 and 8 sccm. target materials are polyethylene polyvinyidenefluoride and polytetrafluoroethylene.

  • When we evaluate sound, there are various methods for noise such as A-weighted SPL(sound pressure level), NC(noise criteria), NR(noise rating) and SIL(speech interference level) etc. however, it is not sufficient for the sounds supplied to public places used in soundscape design. Consequently it is needed to develop the tool for evaluating the good acoustical environment and futhermore quantifying the effect of improvement by supplying sound sources. In this study, it was tried to analyse the sound sources applied for soundscape design using sound quality parameters. The sound sources used were natural sound artificial sound. For the sound quality parameters, Loudness(L), Sharpness(S), Fluctuation strength(FL), Tonality(T), Roughness(R), Unbiased Annoyance(UA) were used and sound quality values were compared both natural and artificial sounds, depending on the convolution of sound sources with background noise, the duration, the frequency contents and the SPL. As a result, the values of L and UA have shown to be changed comparing to the other parameters, and it is necessary to analyse the correlation with subjects' responses.

  • Oil seals are most essential parts in mechanical lubrication system to maintain the close gaps between stationary and high rotating components, and to help prevent oil leakages. Oil seals also can prevent harmful contaminants entering from outside to machinery, especially in severe environments. Therefore, the oil seals have an important performance in the machinery components. The performance of the oil seals are influenced by the design variables such as amount of interference gap between the main lip and shaft, the angle of main lip at air and oil sides and the distance between the garter spring and main lip. In the present study, a finite element analysis was performed to evaluate the oil seal performance with the considerations of number of oil seal dust lips and angle of the lip at oil side with the different design variables. As a result from the FEM analysis, the stress and contact pressure distributions was derived, based on this, performance of the sealing and durability were determined.

  • A wavelength-independent optical sensor based on an asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer (AMZI) is proposed. The optical sensor based on an AMZI is very sensitive to wavelength, and wavelength drift will lead to measurement error. The optical sensor is compensated to reduce its dependence on wavelength. The insensitivity of the optical sensor to wavelength mainly depends on the compensation structure, which is composed of an AMZI cascaded with another AMZI and can compensate the wavelength drift. The influence of wavelength drift on the optical sensor can be counteracted by carefully designing the size parameters of the compensation structure. When the wavelength changes from 1549.9 nm to 1550.1 nm, the error after compensation can be lower than 0.066%. Furthermore, the effect of fabrication tolerance on compensation results is analyzed. The proposed compensation method can also be used to compensate the drift of other parameters such as temperature, and can be applied to the compensation of other interference-based optical devices.

  • This study conducts the flow analysis on the basis of the impeller RPM of water metering valve. The software used for the flow analysis is STAR-CCM+. In terms of the structure of the metering valve, it has an impeller installed inside, and a metering chamber has inlet and outlet holes. The flow analysis on the water metering valve drew the following conclusions: Regarding the flow field in the valve, the impeller had the highest velocity distribution, and complex flow field was generated in the metering chamber. In particular, since the path between the inlet and outlet holes in the metering chamber and the valve body was narrow, there was a section that had flow field interference. The flow rate and flow coefficient distribution according to the impeller RPM were on the linear increase. Given that, it showed the feature of the valve used for water metering on the basis of the impeller RPM.

  • When fisherman use the boat seine net to catch anchovy, a large noise (drum can, small drum and small gong) is used to scare the anchovy school along the wing nets, and into the bag net were they are caught. We want to know how much of an effect these s:mnds have on forceing the anchovy school towards the bag net. The underwater sounds of ancho\'y, drum can, small drum and small gong were analyzed in the labroatory. The behavioral responeses to the playback sounds of anchovy feeding and sounds of artificial instruments were also investigated. The feeding and artificial sounds of the samples were recorded by a tape recorder through a hydrophone in an anechoic aquarium. The sound intensity level was measured by means of a sound level meter in an anechoic chamber. The frequency and intensity of various sounds were analyzed with an analyzing system consisting of a ~-octave filter set, a high speed level recorder, an amplifier and an oscilloscope. The most successful recording was edited into a 9 to 10 second sound track and was repeated in a sequence of 9 to 10 second intervals. The sequence was then reproduced into an anechoic aquarium through the underwater speaker. The results of investigation are as follows; 1. The frequency of the feeding sound was 63~80Hz, and the pressure level produced was less than 32db. 2. The frequencies of the artificial sounds were 315~ 1,OOOHz, and the pressure levels were 88~95 db in the air. 3. When a hydrophone was placed 70cm below the surface with artificial sounds (drum can, small drum and small gong) produced 1 meter above the surface, the pressure level decreased about 30db. 4. The feeding sound was ineffective in attracting the anchovy, because of interference from ambient noise. 5. The artificial sounds had such a small effect on the anchovy's that they could not be used in ocean fisheries.

  • In this study, we investigated morphological characteristics of $SF_6$ clathrate hydrate crystals to understand its formation and growth mechanism. $SF_6$ clathrate hydrate crystals were formed in high-pressure reaction cell charged with pure water and $SF_6$ gas at constant pressure and temperature. Two-phase ($SF_6$ gas/aqueous solution) and three-phase ($SF_6$ gas/aqueous solution/$SF_6$ liquid) conditions were investigated, In both conditions, dendritic shape hydrate crystals were grown as like fibriform crystals along upward growth direction at the gas/aqueous solution interface. In the case of the reaction process of three-phase condition, when the $SF_6$ gas bubbles which were generated in $SF_6$ liquid phase due to the reduction of reaction cell pressure stuck to the gas/aqueous interfaces, the hydrate phase were appeared at the surface of the bubbles. This paper presents the detail growth characteristics of $SF_6$ hydrate crystals including crystal nucleation, migration, growth and interference.

  • This paper intended to assess the hydro-structure characteristics of volcanic rocks based on the hydrogeological data obtained from the underground storage cavern during construction. The variation of groundwater levels was periodically measured from the 28 surface monitoring holes(NX size) and the hydraulic pressures and injection rates were daily monitored from the water curtain holes(95 horizontal holes and 63 vertical holes). The hydraulic interference tests were performed in whole water curtain holes. The distribution patterns of hydraulic pressure are closely related to the dip angles of fracture intersected to the water curtain holes. Three domains can be grouped by the distribution of hydraulic pressures in the horizontal water curtain holes. The initial hydraulic pressures measured immediately after drilling of water crutain holes are high in ascending order of the cavern C-2, C-1, and C-3. The priliminary hydrochemical data also indicate that the portions of the deep groundwater composition is relatively great in the cavern C-3 area. Some of the horizontal water curtain holes in the cavern C-3 show a steady higher groundwater pressure with the composition of shallow groundwater indicating the outer boundary as constant hydraulic boundary. The water curtain holes in the cavern C-2 is characterized as low initial hydraulic pressure and less injection rates, suggesting poor hydraulic connectivity to a shallow groundwater system. The results of the study can help to understand a hydraulic compartment concept in a fracture hydro-geology and be utilized during the surface investigation for a groundwater system.
