The flutter instability is one of the most important themes need to be carefully investigated in the design of long-span bridges. This study takes the central-slotted ideal thin flat plate as an object, and examines the characteristics of unsteady surface pressures of stationary and vibrating cross sections based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The flutter derivatives are extracted from the surface pressure distribution and the critical flutter wind speed of a long span suspension bridge is then calculated. The influences of angle of attack and the slot ratio on the flutter performance of central-slotted plate are investigated. The results show that the critical flutter wind speed reduces with increase in angle of attack. At lower angles of attack where the plate shows the characteristics of a streamlined cross-section, the existence of central slot can improve the critical flutter wind speed. On the other hand, at larger angles of attack, where the plate becomes a bluff body, the existence of central slot further reduces the flutter performance.

In this paper, temperature-induced optical phase shifts in single-mode fibers are studied both analytically and experimentally. Temperature sensor using single-mode fiber interferometer is designed and the temperature sensitivity of the sensor system is investigated. This fiber-optic temperature sensor which employs the Mach-Zehnder arrangement is a high sensitivity sensor of phase detection type. In this type, temperature changes are ob-served as a motion of an optical interference fringe pattern. In the measurements using interferometer, one of the important problems is to detect simultaneously the number and direction of fringe displacement resulting from physical perturbations (temperature, pressure, etc.). To realize this, the array detector using multi-mode fiber is designed. By this array detector the number and direction of fringe displacement is Ineasured very conveniently.

Hydroforming is a forming technology in which a steel tube is set in a die and formed to fit a specified shape by applying hydraulic pressure from inside the tube while also applying force in the tube axial direction (axial feed). In present study, the entire design process chain for an automotive cross-member was simulated and developed using hydroforming technology on high-strength steel. The part design stage required a feasibility study. The process was designed using computer-aided design techniques to confirm the actual hydroformability of the part in detail. The possibility of using hydroformable cross-member parts was examined using cross-sectional analyses, which were essential to ensure the formability of the tube material for each forming step, including pre-bending and hydroforming. The die design stage included all the components of a prototyping tool. Press interference was investigated in terms of geometry and thinning.
In order to increase the lifetimes of cold forging dies, insert rings are generally used. In this study, an insert ring and shrunk ring of the flange upsetting die were designed for the cold forging of an automotive wheel nut. The Stress distribution occurring in the die during forging was simulated using a commercial finite element analyzing program. The effects of the fitting interference and inclined angle of the insert ring on the compressive stress of the die inside were also investigated. The simulated data were compared with the real lifetimes of the forging dies. The maximum compressive stress acting on the edge of a forging die should have the most influence on die lifetime, an idea which could help develop the die design with the longest lifetime. The design of the most optimal forging die with the longest lifetime is made possible by analyzing the maximum inner pressure and principal stress between the shrunk ring and insert ring.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the tribological characteristics of the Electronic control suspension System in a car. In the first example, the cilp used to attach the front electronic control suspension(ECS) system's control actuator was fastened very tightly. Thus, the wire was cut because of continual rotation of the shock-up shover piston rod used to adjust the height of the car. This verified the disconnection phenomenon where wire damaged makes it impossible for the ECS system to send signal to the actuator. The second example, involved a minute hole that allowed gas to leak from the ECS system. As a result, the height of the car verified the down phenomenon. In the third example, the resistance of a wire measured at $0.21{\Omega}$, when the G sensor was disconnected from the system. This verified the system shutdown and lighting of the ECS warning lamp because of body interference caused by a slight pressure on the battery cover. Therefore, quality control is always necessary to ensure safety and durability of a car.

In this paper, acceleration and pressure exerted on a human model were measured under a supersonic condition in a shock tunnel. In order to measure these in an interference-free environment, free-fall technique with an electromagnet and a three-dimensional iron-powdered human model was used. Free-fall experiment was conducted at Mach 4 and the force acting on the model was obtained by calculating the displacement from the flow visualization images.

This paper describes a Power Monitoring Unit (PMU) for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) electrical system, It is designed for the PMU which performs data sensing of generator, transformer rectifier unit (TRU), battery and gear box installed in UAV and operate power ON/OFF devices of mission equipment. The PMU measures the voltage and current for the aircraft power source (generators, transformer rectifier unit and battery), measures the pressure and temperature of the gearbox, and performs the mission equipment power command received from the mission computer. The PMU was designed to meet the requirements of the UAV, and was performed through structure/thermal analysis, environmental test, EMI test and ground/flight tests.
Multiferroic $CoCr_2O_4$ film was deposited on MgO and $MgAl_2O_4$ substrates by the rf-sputtering process. The films were prepared at an RF-magnetron sputtering power of 50 W and a pressure of 10 mtorr (20 sccm in Ar), and at substrate temperatures of $550^{\circ}C$. The crystal structure was determined to be a spinel (Fd-3m) structure by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) with Cu $K{\yen}{\acute{a}}$ radiation. The thickness and morphology of the films were measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The magnetic properties were measured using a Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQIUD) magnetometer. While the ferrimagnetic transitions were observed at about 93 K, which was determined as the Neel temperature, the magnetic properties all show different behaviors. The differences between the magnetic properties can be explained by the stress effects between $CoCr_2O_4$ and the substrates of MgO and $MgAl_2O_4$.
Three-dimensional vortical flow and separated flow topology near the casing wall in an axial flow fan having two different tip clearances have been investigated by a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) flow simulation. The simulation shows that the tip leakage vortex formed close to the leading edge of the blade tip on suction side grows in the streamwise direction. On the casing wall, a separation line is formed upstream of the leakage vortex center due to the interference between the leakage vortex and main flow. The reverse flow is observed between the separation line and the attachment line generated downstream of the trailing edge, and increased with enlarging tip clearance. The patterns of a leakage velocity vector including a leakage flow rate are also analyzed according to two tip clearances. It is noted that the understanding of the distribution of a limiting streamline on the casing wall is very important to grasp the characteristics of the vortical flow in the axial flow fan.
The high-rise supporting towers of long-span suspension and cable-stayed bridges commonly comprise a pair of slender prisms of roughly square cross-section with a center-to-centre spacing of from perhaps 2 to 6 widths and connected by one or more cross-ties. The tower columns may have a constant spacing as common for suspension bridges or the spacing may reduce towards the top of the tower. The present paper is concerned with the aerodynamics of such towers and describes an experimental investigation of the overall aerodynamic forces acting on a pair of square cylinders in two-dimensional flow. Wind tunnel pressure measurements were carried out in smooth flow and with a longitudinal intensity of turbulence 0.10. Different angles of attack were considered between $0^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$, and separations between the two columns from twice to 13 times the side width of the column. The mean values of the overall forces proved to be related to the bias introduced in the flow by the interaction between the two cylinders; the overall rms forces are related to the level of coherence between the shedding-induced forces on the two cylinders and to their phase. Plots showing the variation of the force coefficients and Strouhal number as a function of the separation, together with the force coefficients spectra and lift cross-correlation functions are presented in the paper.
